Freelance, self-employment and gig work

How can I prove my freelance experience is real if an employer checks?

Keep evidence: contracts, invoices, bank records, client emails, a portfolio and client references. Employers sometimes verify self-employment differently from employment, so be ready.

Useful proof:

  • A portfolio or project samples you are allowed to share.
  • Two or three client references who can confirm your work.
  • Invoices or contracts with confidential details hidden.
  • A business registration, trade licence or tax records where applicable.
  • Platform profile pages showing completed jobs and reviews.

You do not need to attach these to your application. Keep them ready in case a background check or employer asks.

Start collecting now rather than when you are asked, because old clients may be hard to reach later. Store everything in one folder, and remove other clients' private details before sharing anything. If a client has closed, a bank record and your own copies of the delivered work can still show the engagement happened.
