I am a retired Indian Army officer. How should my resume present my service to companies?

Present it as management experience with clear civilian descriptions, and keep your rank and service dates accurate. Many Indian companies hire former officers for operations, administration, security, facilities and logistics roles.

Tips:

• Title line: "Colonel (Retd) – Head of Operations, 900-person unit" style, followed by bullets showing scope.
• Translate appointments into business terms: planning, budgets, procurement, people management.
• Add civilian qualifications earned during or after service, such as an MBA or certification.
• Keep the resume to two pages and focus on the last 10 to 15 years.

Avoid listing every posting with full details. Group early postings and highlight the roles most relevant to the job.

In interviews, corporate managers may ask how you will adapt to a flatter, less formal structure. Prepare one or two examples of leading through persuasion, working with civilians or managing budgets and vendors, so they can picture you in their organisation.
