Emailing your resume

How do I check how my attached resume looks to the recipient before applying?

Send a test email to yourself or a friend on a different email service, then open the attachment on both a phone and a computer.

What to look at:

  • Does the file open without warnings?
  • Are fonts, bullets and page breaks correct?
  • Is the file name clear in the list of attachments?
  • On a phone, can you read it when zoomed out to page width?

This test catches broken files, wrong versions and formatting surprises before a recruiter sees them. It is especially worth doing for your first application with a new file or format, such as after making a Word version from your PDF by copying text into a word processor.

Keep the test email in a folder: it is also a handy backup of your resume.
