Starting from samples and job-role starters – Page 2

An example bullet describes my work but at a bigger scale. Can I use it?

Use the idea, but change the scale to match your real experience. Inflating numbers or scope is dishonest and is easy to expose in an interview or reference check.

Example starter bullet:
"Managed a portfolio of 200 corporate clients."

If you handled 35:
"Managed a portfolio of 35 small-business clients."

Tips:

  • Smaller numbers are fine; they still show responsibility.
  • Add context that makes your scale meaningful: "in a 6-person branch" or "as the only accounts assistant".
  • Focus on the quality of results, such as accuracy or customer retention.

Employers hiring at your level expect your scale. A believable, accurate bullet is much stronger than an impressive one you cannot explain.

What is the difference between learning from sample text and copying it?

Learning means taking the pattern; copying means taking the words and claims. Use samples to see how a good line is built, then write your own line about your own work.

Learning from a sample:

  • Noticing that strong bullets start with a verb.
  • Seeing that good bullets include a result or scale.
  • Understanding which skills matter for the role.

Copying a sample:

  • Keeping its sentences unchanged.
  • Keeping its figures, achievements or skills that are not yours.

A quick test: cover the example, then write your own bullet from memory about a similar task you did. If your version includes details only you know, you have learned from it rather than copied it.

What if other applicants use the same role starter as me?

Then the ones who personalise it most will stand out. Many people may start from similar structures, which is fine; the content is what differs.

How to stand apart:

  • Replace every example line with your own facts.
  • Include specifics such as tools, volumes, customers, results and types of organisation.
  • Write a summary that mentions your particular strengths and the job you want.
  • Choose a template and section order that suit your story.

If two resumes from the same starter reach one recruiter, unchanged example lines will be obvious, while personalised ones will read as individual. Treat the starter's text as temporary scaffolding that should be completely replaced by the time you finish.

The starter lists certifications I don't hold. Should I leave them as goals?

No. Remove any certification you do not hold. Listing one you do not have, even as an example left behind, can be seen as a false claim, and employers often check credentials.

What you can do instead:

  • List certifications you do hold, with dates.
  • If you are studying for one, say so clearly: "PMP, exam scheduled for March 2026" or "ACCA, 7 of 13 exams passed".
  • Mention relevant training without implying a credential: "Completed a 35-hour project management course".

For roles where a licence or certification is required, check what the employer and the relevant regulator expect, and do not apply as though you hold it if you do not.

Can I copy sample text from resume examples on other websites?

Use other websites' examples for inspiration only, not as text to paste. Their wording may be protected by copyright, and pasted examples carry the same problems as any sample text: they are generic and not about you.

Better approach:

  • Read several examples to see common skills and achievements in your field.
  • Note ideas that relate to your own experience.
  • Close the example and write your own version with your real details.

Watch for:

  • Claims, figures or tools in the example that you have never used.
  • Regional differences, such as US-style resumes that use different spelling or include details not expected where you are applying.

Your resume should read as written by you, about you, for the job you want.

How do I make sure no sample dates are left in my resume?

Check every date against your own records, one by one. Sample dates often look realistic, so they are easy to miss.

Where sample dates appear:

  • Job start and end dates.
  • Education years.
  • Certification and expiry dates.
  • Awards, training and project years.

A quick method:

  • Write your real dates on paper or in a note.
  • Read only the dates in the preview from top to bottom and compare.
  • Check that your current job says "Present" and that no example "Present" remains in a job you have left.

Wrong dates can cause problems in background checks and application forms, so this step is worth a few minutes.

The Fresh Graduate starter has a Projects section, but I have no projects. What should I do?

Look again at your studies before deleting it, because many graduates have projects they do not think of as projects. If you really have none, remove the section.

Things that can count as projects:

  • A final-year project, dissertation or capstone.
  • Group assignments with a real output, such as a business plan or prototype.
  • Lab work or field studies.
  • Personal projects, such as a website, app, video or event you organised.
  • Competition entries or hackathons.

Example:
"Market research project, Consumer Behaviour module, 2025

  • Surveyed 120 students and presented recommendations to a local café owner."

If none apply, put more detail into Education, Internships, part-time work or Volunteer Work instead.

How can I keep the starter's structure but write everything in my own words?

Work line by line: read the example, decide what it is trying to show, then delete it and write your own line before moving on. Never leave a line half-edited.

A practical routine:

  • Read one example bullet.
  • Ask: "What did I do that shows this?"
  • Delete the example completely.
  • Type your own version from scratch, with your details.
  • Move to the next line.

This prevents you from keeping the example's phrasing out of habit. Keep the parts of the structure that help: the sections, the order, the length of each part. By the end, the resume should have the starter's shape but none of its words, except standard headings like "Work Experience".

I'm an experienced professional. Should I use the sample resume or a role starter?

A role starter, or an import of your existing resume, usually suits experienced people better. The general sample resume is mainly useful for seeing what a complete resume looks like.

Choose a role starter when:

  • It matches your field, so the sections and example skills are relevant.
  • You want ideas for how to describe achievements in your role.

Import your existing resume when:

  • You already have strong content and only need a clean layout.
  • Your career is specialised and examples would not help.

Either way, experienced candidates should focus on results, scope and leadership, and remove example content that is too junior or generic. The Senior Manager / Executive starter may help if you are applying for leadership roles.

What are some examples of generic phrases I should replace?

Phrases that anyone could write without evidence. They often come from samples and old templates, and they rarely persuade a reader.

Common generic phrases:

  • "Hard-working and dedicated professional"
  • "Excellent communication skills"
  • "Team player who can also work independently"
  • "Responsible for various tasks"
  • "Results-driven", "dynamic", "go-getter"
  • "Duties included..."

What to write instead:

  • "Excellent communication skills" becomes "Presented monthly sales results to 3 regional managers."
  • "Responsible for various tasks" becomes the actual tasks: "Processed returns, managed stock counts and trained new cashiers."
  • "Results-driven" becomes an actual result: "Exceeded quarterly sales target four times in 2025."

If you keep a general quality, back it up with an example in the same line or the next one. A good test: if a line would fit on a thousand other resumes unchanged, rewrite it.

The starter's summary sounds like everyone else's. How do I make it mine?

Replace the general description with three specific things: your role and level, your strongest relevant evidence, and what you want next. Keep it to two to four lines.

Starter-style summary:
"Dedicated professional with strong skills and a passion for excellence."

Personal version:
"Logistics coordinator with 4 years' experience in freight forwarding in Jebel Ali. Manage import documentation for over 60 shipments a month and reduced customs delays by improving document checks. Looking to move into a supply chain planning role."

Tips:

  • Use the job title you have or are qualified for.
  • Pick one or two achievements that match the job posting.
  • Avoid words like "passionate" or "dynamic" unless you show them.

Write the summary last, after you have finished the rest of the resume.

Should I follow the spelling style used in the example text?

Follow the spelling style expected where you are applying, and make your whole resume consistent. Example text may not match the style you need.

Guidance:

  • UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India and many Gulf employers commonly use British spelling: "organised", "colour", "licence".
  • US employers commonly use American spelling: "organized", "color", "license".
  • Canada mixes both; follow the job posting.

After editing:

  • Set your browser's spell check to the variety you chose.
  • Look for mixed spellings, such as "organised" in one bullet and "organized" in another.
  • Match the spelling of job titles and skills to the posting where it makes sense.

Consistent spelling is a small detail that shows care.

The starter bullets include numbers. Should I keep them?

No. Replace every sample number with your own real figure, or remove it. Sample numbers are there to show the style of a strong bullet, not to describe you.

What to do:

  • Check each figure: team sizes, targets, volumes, time periods, percentages written as words.
  • Replace it with your real number from records, appraisals or reports.
  • If you only have an estimate, use "around" or "about" and make sure you can explain it.
  • If you have no figure, rewrite the bullet with scope or context instead.

Example sample bullet:
"Trained 15 new staff in safety procedures."

If you trained 4:
"Trained 4 new warehouse staff in safety procedures."

Interviewers often ask, "How did you get that number?" Every figure should have an answer.

Is it OK to keep a generic bullet if it is true?

It is acceptable, but rarely the best choice. A true but generic bullet uses space without adding much. Try to make it specific first, and keep it only if it still helps.

Example generic but true:
"Answered customer questions."

Improved:
"Answered product and delivery questions for around 80 customers a day in a busy electronics store."

When a generic bullet may stay:

  • It describes a basic duty the employer expects to see, such as cash handling for a cashier role.
  • You are short on content and it fills a genuine part of the job.

Put specific bullets first and generic ones last, so your strongest evidence is what the reader sees.

I can't think of anything to replace a sample bullet with. What should I do?

Delete it. Three strong, true bullets are better than five where two are left over from a sample.

Before deleting, try a few prompts:

  • What did you do every week in that job?
  • What problems did you solve, or what did you improve?
  • What did your manager rely on you for?
  • What did you learn to use, such as software or equipment?
  • What praise or results did you receive?

If one of these gives you something real, write a bullet about it. If not, accept fewer bullets for that job; older or shorter jobs often need only one or two.

Empty space is not a problem. Untrue or obviously copied lines are.

How can a role starter help me prepare for interviews?

Use it to check that you can talk about every line you kept, and to spot topics interviewers in that role often explore.

How to use it:

  • For each bullet in your final resume, prepare a short story: the situation, what you did and the result.
  • Look at example skills in the starter that you deleted. Interviewers may still ask about them, so think about how you would answer honestly, such as "I have basic exposure and I'm learning more."
  • Review the starter's summary to see how professionals in the role usually describe themselves, then practise saying your own version aloud.

If any line in your resume makes you uncomfortable to explain, rewrite it until it is something you can discuss with confidence.

How do I know which parts of a starter are sample text?

Assume everything in a starter is sample text until you have replaced or confirmed it. The [brackets] mark the obvious places, but complete example sentences are sample text too.

Typical sample text includes:

  • The name, contact details and professional title.
  • Every job, employer, date and location.
  • Summary, bullets and skills.
  • Education, certifications and other section entries.

What you can usually keep:

  • Standard section headings such as "Work Experience" or "Education".
  • The general section order, if it suits you.

A simple approach: go through every line and either rewrite it with your own details or delete it. When you finish, every line should be something you typed or deliberately confirmed as true.

Does a role starter fit resume conventions in my country?

It gives a general structure, so check the conventions of the country you are applying to and adjust. Starters are written for the role, not for a specific country.

Things to adjust:

  • Personal details: in many Gulf applications, nationality, visa status and notice period can help; in the UK or Canada, optional personal details are often left out.
  • Page size: A4 for most countries, US Letter for the US and Canada. ResumeBuilder.ae offers both.
  • Spelling: British or American, depending on where you apply.
  • Sections: references, photos and declarations vary by region. Note that photos are not supported in the ResumeBuilder.ae PDF.
  • Qualification names: explain local qualifications for foreign readers.

Check a country guide before finalising.

Should my resume be as long as the sample resume?

Not necessarily. The sample shows one example length, but yours should match your own experience and the job.

General guidance:

  • Students and early-career applicants: usually one page.
  • Experienced professionals: often up to two pages.
  • Academic CVs: can be longer, depending on publications and research.

If your resume is shorter than the sample, do not add filler to match it. If it is longer, cut older or less relevant content rather than squeezing text. The preview shows how your content fills the page, so check it after every major change.

I imported my resume. Is it still worth looking at a role starter?

Yes, for ideas. A starter can show skills, sections or achievements you forgot to include, even if your imported content is already good.

How to use it alongside your import:

  • Keep working in your imported resume.
  • Open the starter for your role in a separate resume to read its examples.
  • Note any skills, tools or types of achievement you genuinely have but did not mention.
  • Add them to your own resume in your own words.
  • Delete the starter resume afterwards, since you can save up to 10 resumes.

Do not copy example lines across unchanged. The point is to remind you of your own experience, not to add borrowed content.

Open the resume builder

Should I keep the starter's skills because they look like good keywords?

Only keep the ones that are true for you. Skills that match job postings can help both readers and applicant tracking systems find relevant experience, but listing skills you do not have is dishonest and risky.

A better approach:

  • Compare the starter's skills with two or three real job postings.
  • Keep the skills that appear often and that you genuinely have.
  • Show each important skill in a bullet as well, so it has evidence behind it.
  • Delete the rest.

ResumeBuilder.ae's job-description comparison shows which of a posting's most frequent terms appear in your resume. Use it to find skills you have but forgot to mention, not to fill the page with terms you cannot support.

Can I use the sample resume just to compare templates before writing my own?

Yes. The sample resume is full of content, so it shows how each template handles a complete page: long job titles, several bullets, dates and multiple sections.

How to use it:

  • Open the sample resume and preview several templates.
  • Notice which designs stay clear and readable with a full page of text.
  • Check how dates, headings and skills are displayed.
  • Note one or two templates you like.

Then start your own resume with your real content, and test your shortlisted templates again, because your content will fill the page differently. On ResumeBuilder.ae every template is free to preview. Single-column templates such as ATS Classic are the safest default.

The starter includes sample references. What should I do with them?

Delete them immediately. Sample referees are not real contacts for you, and leaving them in is a serious mistake.

Then decide whether you need references at all:

  • If the employer asks for references on the resume, add two or three real referees, with their permission.
  • If not, remove the References section; most employers ask for referees later in the process.

For real referees, include:

  • Name and job title.
  • Organisation.
  • Email and phone number.

Always tell your referees which jobs you are applying for, so they are ready if contacted.

How should students use the Student starter honestly?

Use it to see which sections and skills employers value in student resumes, then fill it only with what you have really done. Student resumes are judged on potential, so honest small experiences are fine.

Good practice:

  • Replace example part-time jobs, projects and activities with your own.
  • Keep skills you can show: software you have used in coursework, languages, practical skills.
  • Describe group work honestly, saying what you personally did.
  • Delete sections you cannot fill truthfully.

Example:
"Group project: Designed a recycling campaign for campus with 4 classmates; I created the posters and social media plan."

Teachers and employers know students are early in their careers. Clear, accurate and specific content is what makes a student resume stand out.

The checklist flags square brackets I added on purpose. What should I do?

Change them to round brackets (parentheses). The checklist looks for [bracketed] prompts, so your own square brackets may look like an unreplaced placeholder.

Examples:

  • "[Part-time]" becomes "(part-time)".
  • "Sales Executive [Promoted 2024]" becomes "Sales Executive (promoted 2024)".
  • "[UAE Driving Licence]" becomes "UAE driving licence" with no brackets at all.

Round brackets are also more standard in resumes, so the change usually improves the text. After editing, check the checklist again to see that the warning has cleared. Remember it only warns and never blocks, but a clear checklist makes it easier to spot real problems.
