Template conventions by region

How do resume design conventions differ around the world?

The core of a good resume is the same everywhere: clear structure, relevant experience and readable text. What differs by region is mainly page size, whether a photo is common, which personal details are included and how long the document tends to be.

Broad patterns, which vary by employer:

  • US and Canada: US Letter paper, no photo, few personal details, concise resumes.
  • UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand: A4, usually no photo, few personal details, two pages common for experienced candidates.
  • Gulf countries: A4, photo and personal details such as nationality and visa status often included, sometimes longer CVs.
  • Continental Europe: A4, practice on photos varies by country and employer, tabular layouts common in some countries.
  • India and Pakistan: A4, more personal details in traditional formats, though multinational employers often prefer international-style resumes.

A clean single-column template works in all of these. Adjust page size and personal details for each market, and always follow the employer's own instructions.
