In which countries is a photo commonly included on a CV?
Photos are commonly seen on CVs in the Gulf and wider Middle East, in parts of continental Europe and in several Asian countries, while they are usually left out in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Practice varies by employer, sector and role everywhere.
A broad guide:
- Usually left out: US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand.
- Often seen but rarely required: UAE and other Gulf countries, Egypt, some continental European countries, the Philippines, Malaysia.
- Increasingly optional: Germany, France, Spain and other countries where traditional habits are changing.
Customer-facing roles, such as hospitality and airlines, are more likely to request a photo, sometimes separately. Canadian official guidance specifically notes that a photo is not the norm there.
If an advert asks for a photo, follow it. If it does not, a CV without a photo is generally acceptable and keeps the focus on your experience.
