Part-time and casual jobs

What skills do part-time jobs actually show employers?

Part-time jobs show the everyday working skills that graduate employers struggle to find evidence of on a student resume. The trick is to name the skill through what you did, not just list the word.

Common skills you can evidence from casual work:

  • Reliability: keeping regular shifts while studying full time.
  • Customer service: helping, advising or calming down customers.
  • Teamwork: covering for colleagues, working under a shift lead.
  • Handling money or stock: till work, cash-ups, stock counts.
  • Working under pressure: rush hours, events, sales periods.
  • Responsibility: opening or closing the shop, training new staff.

Example: "Trained four new team members on the ordering system during the summer peak."

Pick the two or three skills most relevant to the job you are applying for and make sure your bullets prove them. A skills list that says "teamwork" means much more when a bullet backs it up.
