Tricky situations: promotions, contracts and multiple roles – Page 2

I have worked many short locum or supply placements. How do I format them?

Group them under one heading such as "Locum Physician" or "Supply Teacher" with an overall date range, then summarise the placements. A long list of short placements is hard to read and can look unsettled when it is actually normal for this work.

Example:
"Locum General Practitioner, various clinics, Dubai and Sharjah | 2022 – 2025

  • Covered sessions at eight private clinics, managing typical daily patient lists.
  • Adapted quickly to different record systems and clinic procedures."

Name the most notable placements if helpful. Professional registration details can go in a licences section.

I worked on several projects for the same construction employer. How do I list them?

Keep one employer entry and list the main projects as bullets or short sub-headings with your role and key details. This is clearer than one entry per project.

Example:
"Site Engineer, Delta Contracting LLC, UAE | 2019 – Present

  • Al Reem Residential Tower (G+32): supervised concrete works and subcontractors.
  • Mussafah Warehouse Complex: managed site inspections and daily progress reports.
  • Sheikh Zayed Road Bridge Repair: coordinated night-shift works and traffic plans."

If you have many projects, add a separate "Key Projects" section and keep the experience entry short.

Should volunteer work done alongside a paid job go in my work experience?

Usually put it in a separate "Volunteer Work" section, unless it is directly relevant and substantial, in which case it can go in experience with a clear "Volunteer" label.

Experience section, when relevant:
"Volunteer Accounts Coordinator, Hope Food Bank | 2023 – Present"

Separate section, when less relevant:
"Volunteer Work: Weekend mentor for young football players, City Sports Club."

Either way, label it honestly as volunteer work so the reader knows it was unpaid.

I work remotely for a company in another country. What location do I put for that job?

Show the company's location and make it clear you worked remotely from where you live. This tells the reader both where the employer is and where you actually were.

Examples:

  • "Customer Success Manager, CloudDesk Inc. (USA) | Remote from Manila, Philippines | 2023 – Present"
  • "Content Editor, Northpage Media, London (remote)"

This matters because location affects contracts, time zones and sometimes visa questions. In portals with a single location field, enter where you worked from and mention "Remote for a US company" in the description.

I was paid through an "employer of record" service while working for another company. Whose name do I use?

Name the company you actually worked for and mention the employer of record in brackets if needed for clarity or verification. The company directing your work is what matters to most recruiters.

Example:
"Product Designer, Lumen Health (via an employer-of-record service) | Remote | 2024 – Present"

If a background check is likely, keep your contract details handy, because the employer of record may be the one to confirm your employment. In portals, follow the field labels: "legal employer" may need the service's name.

I worked part time while studying full time. Do overlapping study and work dates look odd?

No, it is very common and shows good time management. List your education and work in their own sections with their real dates, and label the job as part-time.

Example:
"Research Assistant (Part-time, 15 hours/week), Department of Chemistry, University of Lagos | Jan 2024 – Dec 2024"

If the job was during holidays only, say "Summer internship" or "Holiday work". For students and recent graduates, these roles often belong near the top of the resume if they are relevant.

Should I include a job that lasted less than three months?

It depends on whether it adds value and whether leaving it out would create a confusing gap. There is no rule that you must list every job on a resume, but application forms that ask for full employment history usually expect it.

Include it if:

  • It is relevant to the role you want.
  • It was a planned short contract or project.
  • Removing it leaves an unexplained gap.

Consider leaving it off your resume if it was unrelated and brief, but list it on any form that asks for complete history. If you include it, a short label like "(contract)" or "company closed" helps.

Think about the whole picture too. One short job among several longer ones rarely worries a recruiter. Several short jobs in a row may raise questions, so labels and a brief explanation in your cover letter become more important. Whatever you decide, keep your resume, LinkedIn profile and application forms consistent, because differences between them are what usually lead to awkward questions.

Open this answer on its own page: Should I include a job that lasted less than three months?

I did not pass my probation at a job. Should I put it on my resume?

You can leave it off your resume if it was short and leaving it off does not create a confusing gap, but answer honestly if an application form or interviewer asks for full employment history. Never misstate dates to hide it.

If you include it:

  • Keep it brief: title, company, dates, one or two bullets.
  • Prepare a calm, honest explanation focused on fit and what you learned.

Example interview answer: "The role turned out to be more sales-focused than described. I learned to ask more detailed questions about expectations before accepting an offer."

I am on parental leave from my current job. Is it still my current job on my resume?

Yes. You are still employed, so list the job with "Present" as usual. You do not need to mention the leave on your resume.

If it comes up:

  • In applications asking for your availability, give your realistic start date.
  • In interviews, a short explanation is enough if needed: "I am currently on parental leave and available to start from April."

Your experience and skills are the focus; the leave is a normal part of working life.

I took a sabbatical but returned to the same employer. How do I show that?

You can keep the job as one continuous entry, since you remained employed, and mention the sabbatical in one line if it adds value or explains a change in duties.

Example:
"Senior Lecturer, Westbridge University | 2016 – Present

  • Six-month research sabbatical in 2024, completing a study on online assessment."

If the sabbatical produced something relevant, such as research, a qualification or a project, it is worth mentioning. Otherwise, it can stay off the resume.

At a small company I did several jobs at once. Can I use a combined title?

Yes, if it reflects what you really did. A combined title can be clearer than a vague one, especially in small businesses where people wear many hats.

Examples:

  • "Office Manager and Bookkeeper"
  • "Marketing and Sales Coordinator"

Keep it short and use the part most relevant to your target role first. If your official title was something else, you can write: "Administrator (office management and bookkeeping)". Make sure your bullets support both parts.

I worked in a government ministry. Do I name the ministry or the specific department?

Name both: the ministry as the employer and the department or directorate as the unit. Readers understand the level of the organisation from the ministry, and your role from the department.

Example:
"Ministry of Community Services, Dubai
Senior Data Analyst, Planning and Data Department | 2020 – Present"

Use the official English name of the ministry. If it was renamed or merged, use the name at the time you worked there, with the current name in brackets if helpful.

My hotel was run by a management company but owned by someone else. Which name do I list?

Use the hotel name and the brand you worked under; mention the management company or owner only if it was your actual employer or adds recognition.

Example:
"Front Office Supervisor, Seaview Grand Hotel (managed by Pearl Hospitality Group), Muscat | 2022 – Present"

Hospitality recruiters care mostly about the property, its size and level. Adding details like "350 rooms" or "five-star resort" helps them understand your experience.

I hold board or advisory roles alongside my main job. Where do they go on my resume?

Put them in a separate section, such as "Board and Advisory Roles", unless they are your main occupation. This keeps your executive career clear while showing wider responsibilities.

Example:
"Board and Advisory Roles
Non-Executive Director, Coastal Credit Union | 2022 – Present
Advisory Board Member, Women in Logistics Network | 2021 – Present"

Include one line on the board's focus or your contribution if it is relevant. For portals, add them as separate entries only if the form asks for all current positions.

The start-up I worked for shut down. How do I list it?

List it normally with your title and dates, and add a short note that the company closed if it helps explain why you left. Working at a start-up often shows initiative and broad experience.

Example:
"Growth Marketing Lead, ParcelPal (start-up, closed 2025) | 2023 – 2025

  • Built the company's first email marketing programme from scratch."

Keep contact details for a former manager or founder, because there may be no HR department to confirm your employment. A closed company is not a negative on its own.

I did freelance work during a career break. Should I list it as a job?

Yes, if the work was real and paid or substantial. Listing it as freelance or self-employed fills the gap honestly and shows you kept your skills current.

Example:
"Freelance Bookkeeper, Self-employed, Abu Dhabi | Jan 2024 – Dec 2024

  • Managed accounts for four small businesses using QuickBooks."

Do not exaggerate the volume of work. If it was occasional, say so: "Occasional freelance projects alongside family care."

How to Explain an Employment Gap on Your Resume

I had five roles at my company over 15 years. Do I need to describe every one in detail?

No. Give the most detail to your recent and most relevant roles, and summarise older ones in a line or two. This keeps your resume focused and readable.

Example:
"Al Majd Bank, Doha
Branch Manager | 2021 – Present (four bullets)
Assistant Branch Manager | 2017 – 2021 (two bullets)
Earlier roles: Customer Service Officer and Teller, 2010 – 2017"

The "earlier roles" line keeps your timeline complete without spending space on details that no longer matter.

How do I show a graduate rotation programme with several placements?

List the programme as one entry, then show each rotation as a short sub-line with its department and dates. This shows breadth while keeping the structure clear.

Example:
"Graduate Trainee, Finance Leadership Programme, Orion Energy | Sep 2023 – Aug 2025

  • Rotation 1: Financial Planning and Analysis (6 months): built monthly cost variance reports.
  • Rotation 2: Treasury (6 months): supported daily cash positioning.
  • Rotation 3: Internal Audit (12 months): tested controls across three business units."

If you were hired into a permanent role afterwards, list that role above the programme.

My contract was extended several times. Do I list each extension separately?

No. List it as one entry with the overall dates, and note that it was extended if that helps. Extensions show the employer valued your work.

Example:
"Data Analyst (Contract, extended three times), Meridian Insurance | Feb 2023 – Jan 2025"

Separate entries for each extension would make it look like several short jobs. In portals, enter one job with the overall start and end dates.

My contract role became a permanent job at the same company. How do I show that?

Show it under one company heading, with the permanent title on top and the contract period underneath, or as one entry with a note. Either way, it shows the employer chose to keep you.

Example:
"Pixel Studio, Dubai
UX Designer | Jan 2025 – Present
UX Designer (Contract) | Jun 2024 – Dec 2024"

Or: "UX Designer, Pixel Studio | Jun 2024 – Present (contract converted to permanent, Jan 2025)."

UX/UI Designer resume builder

I teach at several colleges at the same time as visiting faculty. How do I list that?

Create one entry for your visiting or adjunct teaching, then list the institutions and courses as bullets. This is clearer than several overlapping entries.

Example:
"Visiting Lecturer, Business Studies | 2022 – Present

  • Northgate College: Principles of Marketing (two semesters per year).
  • City Institute of Management: Consumer Behaviour (evening programme)."

If one position is much more significant, list it separately and group the rest. Use the "Academic Experience" section if your resume has one.

I worked in a call centre on accounts for foreign clients. Should I name the client accounts?

Name your employer and describe the account by industry and region, and name the client only if you are allowed. This is common in BPO work in the Philippines, India and elsewhere.

Example:
"Customer Service Representative, Global Connect BPO, Cebu | 2022 – Present

  • Handled billing enquiries for a US telecommunications client.
  • Consistently met quality and handling-time targets."

If you moved between accounts, list each one as a short bullet with what you handled: voice, chat, email, technical support or sales.

Customer Service Representative resume builder

I have three part-time jobs at once. How do I show them without looking scattered?

List each job separately with "Part-time" labels and real dates, ordered by relevance to the job you want. A short summary line can tie them together.

Example summary: "Fitness professional combining personal training, group classes and online coaching."

Then:
"Personal Trainer (Part-time), FitLife Gym | 2023 – Present
Group Fitness Instructor (Part-time), Studio Move | 2024 – Present
Online Coach (Self-employed) | 2024 – Present"

If they are similar, you could group them under one heading with each employer as a bullet.

In the UK I contract through my own limited company. Do I list my company or the client?

Lead with the client and your role, and mention that you worked as a contractor through your own company. Recruiters want to see whose project you worked on.

Example:
"Business Analyst (Contract), Northern Rail Services, via Ruiz Consulting Ltd | Mar 2024 – Feb 2025"

If you had several clients, either list each contract separately (if long and relevant) or group them under "Independent Contractor, Ruiz Consulting Ltd" with each client as a sub-entry.

I sold property on commission through a brokerage. How do I list that experience?

List the brokerage as your organisation, your title and dates, and focus on results and activity. Commission-based roles are real experience, and specific outcomes make them convincing.

Example:
"Real Estate Agent, Skyline Properties, Dubai | 2022 – Present

  • Closed sales and leases for apartments in Dubai Marina and JVC.
  • Built a client base mainly through referrals and repeat landlords."

If you hold a licence required for your role or location, list it as the regulator requires. Avoid stating figures you cannot back up.
