CV Guidance by Country
Egypt CV and resume guidance
This guide answers common questions about writing a CV for jobs in Egypt. It explains the format most employers expect, how to handle the personal details often seen on Egyptian CVs, such as military status and marital status, and how to present Egyptian qualifications, including faculty names, grades like "Very Good", Al-Azhar and open education degrees, and postgraduate diplomas. It also covers student activities, outsourcing and freelance work, FMCG and pharma sales, tourism, manufacturing, shipping and returning from the Gulf. The answers describe common practice only. For official rules, check the relevant government authority or ask the employer.
What CV format do employers in Egypt usually expect?
Most private employers in Egypt expect a one- or two-page CV in English, in reverse chronological order, with clear sections for experience, education, skills and languages. Multinationals, banks, outsourcing companies and tech firms in Cairo and Alexandria usually screen CVs in English, often through job sites or applicant tracking systems.
A common structure:
- Header: name, professional title, phone with +20, email and area and city.
- Optional personal details: nationality, military status for male applicants, driving licence and notice period.
- Summary: three or four lines for experienced candidates.
- Experience: latest first, with achievements.
- Education: university, faculty, degree, year and grade.
- Courses and certifications, skills and languages.
Fresh graduates usually keep to one page. Avoid the old style of a long "Personal Data" block at the top; put the essentials in a short line. Send your CV as a PDF unless asked for Word, and use a simple single-column layout if you apply through online portals.
Should I write my military service status on my CV in Egypt?
If you are a male Egyptian applicant, it is common to include a short "Military status" line, because many employers in Egypt ask about it early. Recruiters often want to know whether you have completed, been exempted from or postponed service, as it can affect when you are available to start.
Common wording:
- "Military status: Completed"
- "Military status: Exempted"
- "Military status: Postponed until [month and year]"
Put it in your personal details line, not in a separate section. Keep it to one line, and do not explain the reasons for an exemption on the CV.
Women and non-Egyptian applicants do not need this line. If you are applying to multinational employers or jobs abroad, you can usually leave it out unless an application form asks. If you are unsure what your status means for a job, ask the employer or check official guidance rather than guessing on your CV.
How should I write my Egyptian phone number and address on my CV?
Write your mobile number in international format with +20, and give your area and city instead of a full street address. Older Egyptian CVs often show a full address, but recruiters today only need to know roughly where you live and how to reach you.
Example: "+20 10 XXXX XXXX | Nasr City, Cairo, Egypt"
Tips:
- Drop the leading zero after +20, so "010..." becomes "+20 10...".
- Name the district if commuting matters, such as Maadi, New Cairo, Sheikh Zayed, 6th of October or Smouha.
- Use one number that works on WhatsApp.
- Use a professional email address with your name.
If a job is in another city, add "Willing to relocate to Alexandria" or similar wording when it is true.
Should I include my Egyptian National ID number on my CV?
No, leave your National ID number off your CV. It is sensitive personal information, and CVs are forwarded, printed and uploaded to many systems, so it can easily be seen by people who do not need it.
What to do:
- Give your ID details only on an official application form or after an offer, when the employer needs them for contracts or insurance records.
- Keep a clear scan of your ID and certificates ready to send when asked.
- Be cautious with job posts that ask for ID copies before any interview. Check that the company is real before sending documents.
Your name, phone, email and city are enough for an employer to contact you at the CV stage.
Egyptian CVs often list date of birth, marital status and religion. Should mine?
Leave religion out, and treat date of birth and marital status as optional details that you can usually omit. Many traditional Egyptian CVs include a "Personal Data" block with all of these, but modern employers, especially multinationals, focus on skills and experience.
A practical approach:
- Religion: leave it out. It is not relevant to your ability to do a job.
- Marital status: optional; most applicants can leave it out.
- Date of birth: optional; some local employers ask for it on their own forms, where you can provide it.
- Nationality, military status (for male Egyptians), and driving licence: include if relevant.
If an employer's form asks for these details, answer the form honestly. Your CV itself can stay focused on what you offer. The builder has no date-of-birth field, which keeps your CV in line with this style.
Should my CV be in English or Arabic for jobs in Egypt?
English is the safer choice for most private-sector jobs in Egypt, especially in multinationals, banks, tech and outsourcing companies. An Arabic CV can help for government jobs, some local companies and roles where you mainly deal with Arabic-speaking customers.
When to prepare both:
- The advert is in Arabic, or the company is a local family business.
- The role involves Arabic writing, such as legal, media or public relations.
- You are applying to employers in the Gulf as well as Egypt.
If you studied at a French or German language school or university, add that language with a clear level, as some employers in Egypt look for it.
Example: "Languages: Arabic (native), English (fluent), German (B2)"
Keep both versions consistent in dates, titles and grades.
How do I write my Egyptian university grade, such as "Very Good", on my CV?
Write the grade as it appears on your certificate, and add your cumulative percentage or GPA in brackets if it is strong. Egyptian universities often use general grades such as Excellent, Very Good, Good and Pass, which local employers understand, while international employers may need the number too.
Example: "Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting, [university name], 2025. Grade: Very Good (78%)"
Example: "BSc Computer Engineering, [university name], 2026. GPA: 3.3 / 4.0"
Tips:
- Use the same grading system your transcript uses; do not convert one system into another.
- Use the exact grade term on your certificate, translated accurately into English.
- Add a graduation project grade if it was Excellent.
- If your grade is low, you can leave it out and focus on projects and experience.
Should I include my Thanaweya Amma or high school certificate on my CV?
Usually only as a fresh graduate, and only if it adds something, such as a strong result or an international diploma. Once you have a university degree and some work experience, most employers do not need your secondary school details.
Include it when:
- You are a student or fresh graduate with little else to show.
- You earned an IGCSE, American Diploma, IB or Abitur that shows strong English or another language.
- Your result was exceptionally high and you want to highlight it.
Example: "Thanaweya Amma (General Secondary Certificate), Science Section, 2021"
Leave it out after your first job or two, and use the space for experience, courses and skills.
How do I write my faculty, section and university name on an Egyptian CV?
Write the degree, faculty, major or department, university and graduation year, and mention an English, French or credit-hours programme if you studied in one. Egyptian degrees are usually described by faculty, so "Faculty of Commerce, Cairo University" is familiar locally, but an international reader needs the degree name too.
Example:
"Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting (English Section), Faculty of Commerce, Cairo University, 2025"
"BSc Civil Engineering (Credit Hours Programme), Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, 2024"
Tips:
- Write the university name in English as it appears on its official website or certificate.
- Keep the order the same for every degree.
- Add a minor or specialisation if it relates to the job.
How do I present an Al-Azhar University degree on my CV?
List it like any other degree, with the faculty, major, graduation year and grade, and briefly explain the field if the name is unclear in English. Al-Azhar offers degrees in religious studies, Arabic, languages and translation, and also in medicine, engineering, commerce and science.
Example:
"Bachelor of Languages and Translation, English Department, Al-Azhar University, Cairo, 2024. Grade: Very Good"
Tips:
- For non-religious subjects, describe your degree exactly as for any university, so employers focus on the subject.
- If you studied Islamic studies or Arabic and are applying for teaching, translation or media roles, highlight that skill in your summary.
- Add memorisation or recitation certificates only if they relate to the job, such as teaching Quran or Islamic education.
I have a degree from an open education programme in Egypt. How do I list it?
List the degree and university as written on your certificate, and let your experience and skills carry the main message. Many working Egyptians earn degrees through open education programmes while they work, and the degree is still a university qualification.
Example:
"Bachelor of Commerce (Open Education), [university name], 2023"
Tips:
- Follow the exact title on your certificate; do not remove or add words.
- Show that you studied while working, as it signals discipline: "Completed degree part-time while working full-time as an accounts assistant."
- Add courses or certifications that strengthen your field.
If an employer asks about recognition of your degree, refer to the official university or higher education authority rather than describing rules on your CV.
I have a postgraduate diploma from an Egyptian university. How do I show it next to my bachelor's?
List it above your bachelor's degree, with its full title, university and year, and make clear it is a postgraduate diploma, not a master's. Many Egyptian universities offer professional or academic diplomas after a bachelor's, and they show further study in a specific area.
Example:
"Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources Management, Faculty of Commerce, [university name], 2024
Bachelor of Commerce, Business Administration, [university name], 2021"
Tips:
- Do not call it a "master's" or an "MBA".
- If the diploma is part of a path towards a master's, write "Master's in progress" only after you start the master's stage.
- Add a short line on key subjects if they match the job.
How do I show student activities like Enactus, IEEE branches or Model UN on my Egyptian CV?
Treat them like work experience: give your role, organisation, dates and what you achieved. Student activities are very popular at Egyptian universities, and recruiters for graduate jobs often value them highly because they show leadership, teamwork and initiative.
Example:
"Head of Marketing, Enactus [university name], 2023 to 2024
- Led a team of 12 to promote a recycling project that reached 4 local schools.
- Prepared the project presentation for the national competition."
Tips:
- Choose two or three activities with the strongest results.
- Use a heading such as "Student Activities" or "Leadership Experience".
- Remove them gradually once you have full-time experience.
How do I list my engineering graduation project and summer training in Egypt?
Give the project its own entry with the title, a one-line description and your role, then list summer trainings with the company, department and what you did. Egyptian engineering graduates often have little paid experience, so these are your strongest evidence.
Example:
"Graduation Project: Design of a solar-powered irrigation pump, Grade: Excellent
- Responsible for the control system design and testing."
"Summer Training, Maintenance Department, [cement company], Suez, Jul to Aug 2025
- Assisted engineers with preventive maintenance on kiln drives."
Tips:
- Add software used, such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, ETABS or PLC programming.
- Mention any team awards or competitions.
- Keep training entries short if you have many; group minor ones in one line.
I work in a Cairo call centre serving UK or US customers. How do I describe it?
Name the outsourcing company, the type of client or market you served, the language you used and your performance results. Egypt is a major outsourcing location, and many agents support customers in Europe, North America or the Gulf, which builds strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Example:
"Customer Support Agent, [outsourcing company], Cairo, 2023 to 2026
- Supported UK customers of a telecom provider by phone and chat in English.
- Kept quality scores above target for 10 consecutive months.
- Promoted to mentor for new hires."
Tips:
- Do not name the client if your contract is confidential; describe the sector instead.
- Mention your accent-neutral English or other languages, such as German or French.
- Show progression to team leader, quality or training roles.
I freelance from Egypt for clients abroad. How do I show it on my CV?
Create one entry for your freelance work, with a clear title, the period, the types of clients and the projects or results you delivered. Many Egyptian designers, developers, writers and translators work remotely for international clients, and this is valuable experience.
Example:
"Freelance Web Developer, remote, Cairo, 2022 to present
- Built 15 websites for clients in Europe and the Gulf using WordPress and React.
- Maintained a top-rated profile on a freelance platform."
Tips:
- Group small jobs; list two or three major projects separately.
- Link to a portfolio in your header.
- If you work for one foreign company long-term, list it as a remote job with the company name.
Make sure your dates are accurate, and keep client names private unless you have permission.
How should I present FMCG sales experience with titles like Area Sales Supervisor or Key Account Executive?
Keep the title, add the channel and region, and show results such as distribution, sales growth and team size. FMCG companies are big employers in Egypt, and their titles follow a common ladder, but recruiters still need to see your scope.
Example:
"Area Sales Supervisor, Modern Trade, [FMCG company], Alexandria and Delta, 2022 to 2026
- Led 8 sales representatives covering 300 outlets.
- Grew numeric distribution of a new product line across hypermarkets.
- Negotiated listing and promotion plans with two national chains."
Tips:
- Name the channel: traditional trade, modern trade, key accounts, horeca.
- Show the geography, as Egypt's regions differ a lot.
- Mention systems such as sales automation tools or ERP.
What should a medical representative CV include for pharmaceutical companies in Egypt?
Include your territory, therapeutic areas, the types of doctors and pharmacies you called on, and your target achievement. Medical representative roles are a common entry point into pharma in Egypt, especially for graduates in pharmacy, science and veterinary medicine.
Include:
- Products by therapeutic area, such as cardiology, diabetes or antibiotics, without confidential data.
- Territory: governorate or district.
- Call activity, such as visits per day, and customer types.
- Results: Example: "Achieved 112% of annual sales target in East Cairo."
- Training: product training, selling skills, CRM tools.
Add your degree and syndicate membership if you hold a pharmacy or medical degree. If you are new, show communication skills from internships, student activities or sales jobs.
How do I show my syndicate membership, such as Engineers or Pharmacists Syndicate, on my CV?
List it in a Professional Memberships section or next to your degree, with the syndicate name and the year you joined. Professional syndicate membership is commonly mentioned by Egyptian engineers, doctors, pharmacists, lawyers and other professionals, and employers often ask about it.
Example:
"Member, Egyptian Engineers Syndicate, since 2020"
"Member, Egyptian Pharmacists Syndicate, since 2022"
Tips:
- Leave out your membership card number unless an employer asks for it.
- If the role or country requires a professional licence, list it as the regulator requires, with its number and expiry date if needed.
- For jobs abroad, add membership of international bodies separately.
How do I present tourism experience from Red Sea resorts like Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh?
Show the resort type, your department, the guests you served and the languages you used. Red Sea resorts employ large teams in hotels, diving, animation, guest relations and food and beverage, and many serve European guests in several languages.
Example:
"Guest Relations Officer, [resort name], Hurghada, 2021 to 2026
- Welcomed guests from Germany, Italy and Eastern Europe in four languages.
- Resolved complaints and improved review scores during peak season."
Include:
- Languages with levels, such as German, Italian or Russian.
- Certificates such as diving instructor or lifeguard qualifications, with dates.
- Systems like property management software.
If you worked seasonally, mark it as seasonal and group repeated seasons in one entry.
How do I describe work on large real estate and new city projects in Egypt?
Name the type of development, your role and your contribution, and keep confidential values out. Many Egyptian engineers, surveyors and project staff work on large residential, commercial and infrastructure projects in new cities, often for developers, consultants or contractors.
Example:
"Site Engineer, [contractor name], residential compound project, New Cairo, 2022 to 2026
- Supervised finishing works for 14 residential buildings.
- Coordinated with the consultant on inspection requests and snag lists."
Tips:
- Make clear whether you were on the developer, consultant or contractor side.
- Include software, such as Primavera, AutoCAD or Revit.
- Mention project size in general terms, such as "a 120-building compound".
How do I present factory experience from Egypt's industrial cities?
State the industry, the production area, your role and your results in quality, output or safety. Industrial cities such as 10th of Ramadan, 6th of October, Sadat City and Borg El Arab host many textile, food, chemicals and engineering plants.
Example:
"Production Supervisor, [textile company], 10th of Ramadan City, 2020 to 2026
- Supervised 3 production lines with 60 operators per shift.
- Reduced fabric defects through new inspection checkpoints."
Include:
- Quality systems, such as ISO standards or lean methods.
- Machines and systems you used.
- Export or customer audits you supported.
If you worked shifts, you can say so, but focus on results rather than hours.
I teach in an Egyptian government school and want to move to an international school. How should my CV change?
Lead with your subject knowledge, English level and any experience with international curricula, and show modern teaching methods with examples. International schools in Egypt follow British, American, IB and other systems, and they look for teachers who can teach in English and use student-centred methods.
Steps:
- Add training in active learning, assessment or educational technology.
- Mention any experience with IGCSE, SAT or IB content, even tutoring.
- Give examples of improved results, projects or clubs.
- Show your English level with a test score if you have one.
Example: "Designed project-based science units for Grade 8 classes of 40 students."
Write your summary for the specific curriculum of the school you apply to.
I'm returning to Egypt after years in the Gulf. How should my CV present that experience?
Present your Gulf roles with clear results and explain any company or system that Egyptian employers may not know. Gulf experience is respected in Egypt, but recruiters still want to see what you achieved and how it fits the local job.
Tips:
- Add a one-line description of each Gulf employer: "[company name], a facilities management firm with 2,000 staff in Riyadh."
- Translate Gulf-specific terms, such as local authority approvals, into plain English.
- Update your phone number and location to Egypt, and add your availability date.
- Mention any skills that suit the Egyptian market, such as managing large teams or international clients.
Example summary line: "Finance Manager with eight years in Saudi Arabia, returning to Cairo and available immediately."
Egyptian job sites ask me to fill in a profile. Do I still need a separate CV?
Yes, keep a separate CV file as well. Job sites in Egypt often ask you to build a profile, but many employers still download or request a CV, and you will need one for email applications, referrals and company portals.
Tips:
- Keep your profile and CV consistent in titles, dates and skills.
- Fill in every profile field, as recruiters may search by job title, location or skills.
- Upload a simple PDF CV with clear headings so it can be read by systems.
- Update your profile and CV when you change jobs or add a certification.
Use your CV for tailoring: adjust your summary and key skills for each job, which a single profile cannot do well.
