CV Guidance by Country
Saudi Arabia CV and resume guidance
This guide covers common questions about writing a CV for jobs in Saudi Arabia. It explains how Saudi nationals and expatriates usually present nationality, residency, location and languages, and how to describe experience from large projects, oil and gas sites, hospitals, hospitality and seasonal work. It also covers Saudi job titles, co-operative training, graduate programmes, technical diplomas and applying from abroad or through agencies. It is written for graduates, experienced professionals and skilled workers. The guidance describes common practice, not legal rules; for residency, employment or localisation rules, check the official government portal or ask the employer.
Should my CV for a private company in Saudi Arabia be in English or Arabic?
For most private-sector jobs, an English CV is the usual choice, especially in multinational companies, engineering, oil and gas, banking, healthcare and IT. Many Saudi companies work in English for documents, systems and hiring.
An Arabic CV, or an Arabic version alongside the English one, makes sense when:
- The advert is written only in Arabic.
- The role is customer-facing with mainly Arabic-speaking clients.
- You are applying to a government body or a company that asks for Arabic.
If you are a Saudi national, having both versions ready is practical. Keep the content identical so that titles and dates match. The builder can produce CVs in English or Arabic (right to left), set on the Design tab, so you can keep two versions.
How do I write a Saudi mobile number on my CV?
Use international format with the +966 country code and drop the leading zero, for example +966 55 123 4567. This works for local recruiters and for international recruitment agencies that call from outside the Kingdom.
Tips:
- Keep the spacing simple; avoid brackets.
- Add "(WhatsApp)" if you use that number for messages, since many recruiters in the region make first contact that way.
- If you are outside Saudi Arabia, use your current number with its country code and mention your planned move in your location line.
Example: "+966 50 765 4321 (mobile and WhatsApp)"
I'm a Saudi national. What do private-sector recruiters look for on my CV?
They look for clear evidence that you can do the job: relevant training, work experience, English ability and professional skills. Show your nationality in your personal details, because many employers run programmes or targets for hiring Saudi talent. These localisation (Saudisation) schemes have their own rules, which change, so check the official government portal if you need details.
Strong content includes:
- Internships, co-operative training and on-the-job training programmes, with tasks and results.
- Certifications linked to your target role.
- Projects from university that resemble real work.
- English level, shown with a test score if you have one.
- Part-time or volunteer work that shows reliability and customer service.
Keep it to one or two pages, with a summary naming the role you want. Write "Nationality: Saudi" in your header using the builder's optional nationality field.
How do expatriates in Saudi Arabia usually show their Iqama status on a CV?
Many expatriate candidates add a short residency line in their personal details, such as "Residency: Saudi Iqama holder, based in Riyadh". It tells recruiters that you are already living in the Kingdom, which can matter for start dates.
Keep it simple:
- State only what you hold and where you are based.
- Do not write claims about whether your residence can be moved to a new employer or what the employer must do. Those depend on rules you should confirm on the official government portal or with the employer.
- Leave out your Iqama number and expiry date.
If you are not comfortable sharing residency details on your CV, leave the line out and answer the question when the employer asks. The builder's optional work authorization / visa status field can hold this line.
Should I write my Iqama number or Saudi national ID number on my CV?
No. Your CV may be shared with several recruiters and stored in many systems, and an ID number does not help you get shortlisted. Employers collect identity numbers securely during the hiring stage.
Leave out:
- Iqama or national ID numbers.
- Passport numbers and expiry dates.
- Border numbers or visa numbers.
If you want recruiters to know you live in Saudi Arabia, a line such as "Residency: Iqama holder, Jeddah" or "Nationality: Saudi" is enough. The builder has no ID number field, so nothing like this appears unless you type it.
How should I show my location and willingness to work in different Saudi cities?
Put your current city in your header and, if you are flexible, add the cities or regions you would accept. Saudi Arabia is large, and many roles are based outside the main cities at industrial areas, project sites and new developments.
Examples:
- "Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (open to Eastern Province and Jeddah)"
- "Dammam, Saudi Arabia (open to remote site assignments)"
If you have worked at remote sites before, mention it in your experience, for example "Worked 18 months at a remote industrial site with camp accommodation." This reassures employers that you know what site life involves. Only say "anywhere in KSA" if you mean it.
How do I show experience on a large Saudi development project without breaking confidentiality?
Describe the project by type, scale and your role, and name it only if it is publicly known and your employer allows it. Many Saudi projects are high profile, and recruiters value people who have worked on them, but contracts often include confidentiality terms.
Safe ways to describe it:
- "Mixed-use waterfront development in western Saudi Arabia, 2,000+ workers on site"
- "Large public transport project in Riyadh"
- "Greenfield tourism resort on the Red Sea coast"
Then focus your bullets on your contribution: packages managed, schedules met, safety records, teams supervised. Never include drawings, internal figures or client documents in your CV or portfolio unless you have permission.
Should I mention Vision 2030 on my CV?
Only if you can connect it to real work you did. Many candidates write "passionate about Vision 2030" in their summary, and on its own the phrase does not tell a recruiter anything about your skills.
Better approaches:
- Describe work in sectors the national programme is developing, such as tourism, entertainment, logistics, renewable energy, healthcare or digital services, with concrete results.
- Mention specific projects you contributed to (within confidentiality limits).
- In your cover letter, you can briefly link your goals to the employer's growth plans.
Example bullet: "Trained 30 new hospitality staff for a resort opening in 2025."
A specific achievement shows commitment far better than a slogan.
I'm a Saudi woman looking for my first job. What should my CV focus on?
Focus on what you can offer an employer now: your education, skills, any training or internships, and activities that show responsibility. Many Saudi women are entering the workforce in sectors such as retail, hospitality, healthcare, finance, education and technology, and recruiters look for the same things they look for in any first-job CV.
Include:
- Your degree or diploma, with any honours.
- Internships, co-operative training or volunteering, with real tasks.
- Short courses and certifications, for example in customer service, digital skills or accounting.
- Languages, with your true English level.
- A summary naming the type of role you want.
Keep personal details simple: name, phone, email, city and nationality if you wish.
I'm a Saudi returning after studying abroad. What should my CV emphasise?
Emphasise the skills and experience you gained abroad that Saudi employers can use, and show you are ready to work locally. Recruiters often value international study, but they want to see how it applies to the job.
Highlight:
- Your degree, university, country and graduation year.
- Internships, part-time jobs or research done abroad.
- Your English level, now strong after study.
- Projects relevant to Saudi sectors you are targeting.
- Scholarship details briefly, if you had one: "Full government scholarship".
Example summary: "Mechanical engineering graduate (University of Leeds, 2026) with a summer placement in HVAC design, returning to Riyadh and seeking a graduate engineer role."
Add your Saudi phone number as soon as you have it.
How do I list co-operative training from my Saudi university?
List it as an internship or as work experience, with the company, location, dates and your tasks. Co-operative training (often called "co-op") is a common part of Saudi degrees, and employers treat it as real workplace experience.
Example:
"Co-op Trainee, Finance Department, Al Rawabi Industrial Co., Jubail, Saudi Arabia, Jan 2026 to Jun 2026
- Reconciled supplier statements and prepared monthly accrual schedules.
- Built a Power BI dashboard for overdue payables."
Place it under Internships or Work Experience, near the top if it is your strongest experience. Mention any report or presentation you delivered at the end of the co-op.
My Saudi employer uses titles like "Specialist II" or grade numbers. How do I write them?
Write your official title, and add a plain-English equivalent if the title alone does not make your level clear. Large Saudi organisations often use graded titles such as "Specialist", "Senior Specialist", "Lead Specialist", "Section Head" or "Supervisor", and a grade number means little to outside recruiters.
Example:
"Senior Specialist, Procurement (team lead for 4 buyers)"
Tips:
- Leave out internal grade numbers unless they are well known in your industry.
- Use bullets to show scope: budgets, team size, projects.
- If you were promoted within the same company, list each title with its dates.
How should engineers show a professional registration on a CV for Saudi Arabia?
If you hold a professional engineering registration or classification, in Saudi Arabia or elsewhere, list it in a Certifications or Licences section with the issuing body, grade or category, membership number and validity date as shown on the document.
Example: "Professional Engineer classification, [issuing body], Membership no. [number], valid until [month year]"
If you have not registered yet:
- List your home-country chartered or registered status if you hold one.
- Do not state that you are registered or eligible in Saudi Arabia if you have not confirmed it.
Requirements differ by profession and role, so follow the employer's instructions and check with the official professional body.
How do I show that I know an oil company's standards and procedures?
Name the standards, systems and processes you have actually used, inside your job bullets and in your Skills section. In Saudi Arabia's energy sector, contractors and operators often look for people who already understand client standards, permit-to-work systems and quality documentation.
Examples:
- "Prepared inspection test plans in line with client engineering standards and international codes."
- "Issued and closed permits under the site's permit-to-work system."
- "Maintained quality documentation for client audits with zero major findings."
Name international codes you used (such as ASME, API or IEC standards) where relevant. Mention a client's internal standard only if it is commonly referred to in job adverts and not confidential.
Why do some Saudi employers ask whether I will relocate with family?
Because it can affect the relocation package, housing and the paperwork the employer prepares. It is mainly a question for the application form or interview, not a required CV detail.
On your CV:
- You can leave marital and family status out.
- If you choose to include it, keep it to "Marital status: Married" in personal details.
- Do not list children's names or ages.
In an interview or on a form, answer honestly about your plans. If you are unsure what documents you would need for family members, check the official government portal or ask the employer's HR team rather than guessing.
I'm outside Saudi Arabia. How should my CV show I'm ready to relocate?
Say where you are now and when you can move, at the top of the CV. Saudi employers hiring from abroad want to know how soon you can start and that you are serious about the move.
Show it with:
- Header: "Lahore, Pakistan (relocating to Saudi Arabia)".
- Notice period: "Available to join within 60 days of offer".
- Summary: name the role and say you are seeking a position in the Kingdom.
- Any previous Gulf experience, with country and city.
Keep your current country's phone number with its code, and add an email you check often. Do not mention visa arrangements as facts; the employer will explain its process.
A recruitment agency in my home country is hiring for Saudi Arabia. What CV do they want?
Usually a short, clear CV showing the trade or profession they are recruiting for, your years of experience, key skills and personal details such as nationality. Overseas agencies often shortlist large numbers of candidates for Saudi employers, so a CV that shows the match in seconds works best.
Include:
- The exact position title from the agency's advert.
- Total years of relevant experience, and any Gulf experience.
- Trade certificates, licences and training.
- Passport-holding status only as "Valid passport: Yes", without the number.
Check the agency is genuine before handing over documents, and be cautious about anyone asking for large fees. If you are unsure, check your own government's official list of licensed overseas recruitment agencies.
Keep a master CV with full details, then send the agency a shorter version focused on the position they advertise. If they reformat it onto their own template, ask to see the final version so you can check titles and dates are still correct.
Do Saudi employers want trade certificates on a technician CV?
Yes, list them clearly. For electricians, welders, HVAC technicians, mechanics and similar trades, employers want to see your training and certificates, ideally near the top of the CV.
How to present them:
- "Electrical Installation Diploma, [institute], Pakistan, 2019"
- "Welding certification, 6G position, [certifying body], 2023"
- Any trade test or skill assessment you passed, with year.
Some employers or programmes may ask for a skills verification or trade test before hiring. Requirements vary, so read the advert and check official sources rather than assuming. Never list a certificate you do not hold; trade certificates are often checked.
My name has several English spellings across my documents. Which should I use?
Use the spelling in your passport, because employers prepare offer letters and other paperwork from it. Arabic names are transliterated in many ways (Mohammed, Muhammad, Mohamed), and recruiters may search for the spelling on your documents.
Tips:
- Use the passport spelling everywhere: CV, email address, LinkedIn and application forms.
- If your certificates use a different spelling, keep the CV in passport form; be ready to explain the difference if asked.
- If your family name is long, you can shorten middle names, but keep the first and last names exactly as in the passport.
Consistency avoids delays when the employer checks your documents.
As a Saudi job seeker, how do I show my English level convincingly?
Give a recognised test score if you have one, and back it up with evidence of using English. Private-sector employers in Saudi Arabia often work in English, so they look closely at this.
Ways to show it:
- Languages section: "Arabic (native), English (professional working proficiency)".
- Test score: "IELTS Academic overall 6.5, 2025", or a national English test if you took one.
- Evidence: study in English, presentations, reports, customer service in English.
Write your CV in clear, simple English with no spelling mistakes. A polished English CV is itself proof. Do not overstate your level; interviews are often in English.
International companies are opening offices in Riyadh. How do I target them with my CV?
Tailor your CV to show regional and international experience, strong English and familiarity with global processes. Companies setting up or expanding regional headquarters in Riyadh often look for people who can work with head office abroad as well as with local clients.
Highlight:
- Work with international teams or clients across time zones.
- Regional responsibility covering several GCC countries.
- Experience setting up new offices, teams or processes.
- Arabic and English skills.
Use a clean, single-column CV that their applicant tracking systems can read, and follow the instructions on each company's careers page. A short line in your summary such as "Based in Riyadh, available immediately" can help.
A Saudi job ad says "Saudi nationals only". Should I still apply as an expatriate?
Usually not. Some roles are restricted to nationals because of employer policy or localisation programmes, and an application from a non-Saudi will normally not be considered. Applying anyway takes your time and the recruiter's.
What to do instead:
- Look for adverts that are open to all nationalities, or that mention "expatriates" or "all nationalities".
- Contact the employer or agency if the wording is unclear.
- Keep your nationality visible in your CV, so recruiters can match you quickly to open roles.
The rules on which jobs are reserved for nationals are set by the government and change over time. If you need to know the details, check the official government portal rather than relying on forums. Social media posts about which jobs are reserved are often out of date or wrong.
I'm a healthcare professional applying to Saudi hospitals. What extra details do they look for?
Saudi hospitals often look for your licence or registration details, your exact specialty and the type of facility you worked in, beyond a normal CV.
Useful details:
- Licence or registration: issuing body, number, expiry date.
- Specialty and sub-specialty: "Registered Nurse, Paediatric ICU".
- Facility type and size: "450-bed tertiary teaching hospital".
- Accreditation experience: working through hospital accreditation surveys.
- Life-support certificates, such as BLS or ACLS, with expiry dates.
- Systems: electronic medical record systems you used.
If a Saudi licence or registration is needed, the employer or the health regulator will explain the process. Do not claim to be licensed in Saudi Arabia until you are.
I'm applying for tourism and hospitality jobs in Saudi Arabia. What should my CV highlight?
Highlight guest service, openings experience and languages. Saudi Arabia's tourism and hospitality sector has been growing, with many new hotels, resorts, attractions and events, so employers often look for people who can help launch and run new operations.
Strong points to show:
- Pre-opening or opening experience: "Part of the pre-opening team for a 300-room resort."
- Guest satisfaction results and service awards.
- Languages useful for international and Arabic-speaking guests.
- Training others, especially new or first-time hospitality staff.
- Brand standards or systems you know, such as property management systems.
Keep the CV to two pages, and put your most recent and relevant hospitality role first.
How do I list seasonal Hajj or Umrah work on my CV?
List it as a seasonal or contract role with the organiser, location, season and what you did. Hajj and Umrah seasons involve large-scale logistics, guest services, healthcare, transport and crowd management, and employers value the experience.
Example:
"Pilgrim Services Supervisor (seasonal), Al Huda Services Co., Makkah, Saudi Arabia, Hajj seasons 2024 and 2025
- Coordinated transport and accommodation for groups of 400 pilgrims.
- Resolved guest issues in Arabic, Urdu and English."
If you worked several seasons, group them under one entry with all the years. Focus bullets on scale, teamwork and problem solving, which transfer to hospitality, events and operations roles.
