France CV and resume guidance

This guide covers CV conventions for jobs in France. It explains how a French CV is usually structured, from the "titre du CV" headline to the "centres d'intérêt" section, and answers questions about length, photos and personal details, language choice, dates, diplomas and grades, internships and work-study, cover letters and applying from abroad. It helps international applicants, graduates and experienced professionals present their background clearly to French recruiters. These are common practices rather than rules: expectations vary by employer and sector, so always follow the instructions in the job advert.

What does a typical French CV look like?

A typical French CV is short, structured and topped by a clear job title. Most applicants use one page early in their career and up to two pages later, in reverse chronological order.

Common elements:

  • Contact details at the top, with a "titre du CV": a headline naming the job you want, such as "Contrôleur de gestion".
  • A short "accroche" or profile of two or three lines, which is optional.
  • Expérience professionnelle: jobs with dates, employer, place and achievement bullets.
  • Formation: degrees and diplomas, often with the level (for example a Master) and the school.
  • Compétences and Langues: skills and language levels.
  • Centres d'intérêt: a brief line on interests, still common in France.

The CV usually goes with a "lettre de motivation" (cover letter). Photos and personal details such as age are optional and vary by sector and employer. Keep the layout clean and send a PDF unless asked otherwise.

Is a one-page CV expected in France?

For students, graduates and people with a few years of experience, one page is the common expectation in France. Experienced professionals and managers (cadres) often use two pages, and that is widely accepted.

How to decide:

  • Under about five years of experience: aim for one page and cut older, less relevant details.
  • Longer careers: two pages, with the most relevant roles on page one.
  • Academic or research roles: longer CVs with publications are normal.

Do not shrink the font to force everything onto one page. If you need a second page, make sure it contains useful content rather than a few stray lines.

Do French employers expect a photo on the CV?

No, a photo is optional in France. It is still fairly common, especially in customer-facing, sales and hospitality roles, but many applicants leave it out, and large employers and international companies rarely expect one.

If you include one:

  • Use a recent, professional head-and-shoulders photo with a neutral background.
  • Keep it small and in the header.

If you leave it out, nothing is missing. Your title, experience and skills matter more. Some online forms in France ask you not to upload a photo; always follow the employer's instructions. Some French employers have also experimented with anonymous CVs, where name, photo and personal details are removed so that recruiters focus on skills, which shows how optional the photo has become.

ResumeBuilder.ae does not support photos in the PDF, which keeps the CV easy for applicant tracking systems to read. If a portal has a separate photo field and you want to use it, you can upload a photo there.

Should I put my age or marital status on a CV for France?

It is optional, and many applicants in France now leave both out. Older French CV templates often showed age, marital status ("situation familiale") and number of children, so you will still see them in examples.

A practical approach:

  • Leave out marital status and children; they do not show whether you can do the job.
  • Age is a personal choice; omitting it is common and accepted.
  • Keep the details that help: name, phone, email, city and, if relevant, driving licence or availability.

If an employer's form asks for a particular detail, answer what is required there rather than adding it to every CV.

What is a "titre du CV" and how do I write one?

The "titre du CV" is a short headline at the top of a French CV that names the job you are applying for. It tells the recruiter at a glance what you do, and it is a common French convention.

Examples:

  • "Développeur Full Stack – 5 ans d'expérience"
  • "Assistante de direction bilingue anglais"
  • "Jeune diplômé en finance – recherche un poste d'analyste"

Tips:

  • Match the job title used in the advert where it honestly fits.
  • Keep it to one line.
  • Change it for each application if the roles differ.

In ResumeBuilder.ae, the professional title field under your name works well for this headline.

Is a lettre de motivation still needed with a French CV?

Often, yes. Many French employers still expect a "lettre de motivation", especially for graduate schemes, the public sector, smaller companies and roles where motivation matters. Some large employers and online portals now make it optional or replace it with a few questions.

Follow the advert:

  • If it asks for "CV + lettre de motivation", send both.
  • If the form has only a CV upload, you can add a short message in the email or form if allowed.
  • For unsolicited applications, a letter is usually expected.

A good French cover letter is about one page, formal and specific: why this company, why this role, and what you bring. A common structure is "vous" (what you know about the company), "moi" (your relevant experience) and "nous" (what you could achieve together), ending with a request for an interview and a formal closing such as "Je vous prie d'agréer, Madame, Monsieur, l'expression de mes salutations distinguées." ResumeBuilder.ae lets you write a matching cover letter in the builder.

What section headings are used on a CV written in French?

French CVs use short, standard headings, which also help applicant tracking systems. The common ones are:

  • Profil or Accroche (summary)
  • Expérience professionnelle (work experience)
  • Formation (education)
  • Compétences (skills)
  • Langues (languages)
  • Informatique (IT skills), sometimes inside Compétences
  • Centres d'intérêt (interests)
  • Bénévolat or Engagement associatif (volunteering)

Keep the order logical: "Formation" first for students and recent graduates, "Expérience professionnelle" first for everyone else. In ResumeBuilder.ae you can choose French as the resume language on the Design tab; check in the preview that every heading reads as you want before downloading.

Should I write "Bac+5" next to my foreign master's degree?

Only if you are sure it is accurate. French recruiters often describe education levels as "Bac+3" (bachelor's level) or "Bac+5" (master's level), so a short equivalent can help them understand a foreign degree. But it is your description, not an official title.

A careful way to write it:
Example: "Master of Science in Data Science (two-year programme after a three-year bachelor's), [university], [country] (2022) – equivalent level: Bac+5"

Tips:

  • Keep the original degree name.
  • If your degree has been officially assessed in France, say so; otherwise avoid words like "recognised" or "équivalent officiel".
  • Do not label a three-year degree as Bac+5.

How do I list a grande école on my CV?

Write the school's name, the programme and the degree, with dates, just as you would for a university. French recruiters know the main grandes écoles (selective schools of engineering, business and administration), so the name speaks for itself in France.

Example:
"2019 – 2022 Diplôme d'ingénieur, École Centrale de Lyon
Specialisation: energy systems; final-year internship at Beispiel Energie"

If you also did the preparatory classes ("classes préparatoires"), add them as one line above, since French employers understand the selection involved. On an English CV for international employers, add a short explanation such as "Master's-level engineering degree" after the French title.

How do I list a stage or alternance on a French CV?

List both under professional experience, with dates, the company and what you did. A "stage" is an internship, and an "alternance" is a work-study programme combining school and a job; French employers value both as real experience.

Examples:
"09/2023 – 08/2025 Alternance – Chargée de communication, Beispiel SA, Paris

  • Wrote the monthly internal newsletter for 800 employees"

"02/2025 – 07/2025 Stage – Assistant contrôleur de gestion, Exemple SAS, Lille"

Make the type of contract clear in the title line. For an alternance, you can also show the school in your education section with the same dates.

What should go in the "centres d'intérêt" section of a French CV?

Two or three specific interests that say something about you, ideally with a detail. French recruiters still read this section and sometimes ask about it in interviews.

Make it specific:

  • Weak: "Sport, lecture, voyages"
  • Better: "Course à pied (semi-marathon de Paris 2025), club de lecture mensuel, voyages en Amérique du Sud"

Tips:

  • Show commitment: competitions, responsibilities in a club, long-term activities.
  • Avoid interests that reveal religion or politics unless relevant to the role.
  • Keep it to one or two lines at the bottom of the CV.

Experienced applicants can drop the section if space is tight.

How should I show my English level on a CV for France?

Give a CEFR level and, if you have one, a test score. In France, English test results such as TOEIC or TOEFL are commonly listed, especially by graduates.

Example:
"Anglais : courant (C1) – TOEIC 940 (2025)
Espagnol : intermédiaire (B1)
Arabe : langue maternelle"

Tips:

  • Use "langue maternelle" for your native language.
  • Avoid vague labels such as "scolaire" (school level) if you can give a CEFR level.
  • Only list scores that are recent and real.

If the job requires English daily, consider adding a line in your experience showing it, such as "Handled client calls in English with UK and US partners".

Can I apply to French companies with an English CV?

Yes, when the job advert is in English or the company clearly works in English, such as many multinationals, tech start-ups and international organisations. Otherwise, a French CV is usually the safer choice.

Guidelines:

  • Advert in French, French-speaking team: send a French CV if your French is good enough.
  • Advert in English: send an English CV.
  • Advert in French but asks for fluent English: either can work; French shows effort.

If you send an English CV, state your French level clearly. If you send a French CV, have it checked by a fluent speaker. Keep your cover letter in the same language as the CV.

How are dates usually written on a French CV?

Use month and year in a consistent format, newest first. Common French styles are "09/2022 – 06/2025" or "Sept. 2022 – juin 2025". For a current job, write "depuis 09/2022" (since) or "09/2022 – aujourd'hui".

Example:
"Depuis 03/2023 Responsable logistique, Exemple SAS, Lyon"

Tips:

  • Month names are not capitalised in French (juin, septembre).
  • Pick one style and use it everywhere.
  • For older or short roles, a year range is acceptable if you are consistent, but months make your timeline clearer.

Should I mention "permis B" on my CV for a job in France?

Mention it when the job involves driving or when you will need to reach sites not served by public transport, such as many roles outside big cities. "Permis B" is the standard car licence in France, and French CVs often list it in the personal details.

Example: "Permis B, véhiculé" (car licence, own vehicle)

If your licence is from outside France, write the country, for example "Driving licence: Morocco (Category B)". Whether a foreign licence can be used in France depends on official rules, so do not claim it is valid there unless you have checked. For city office jobs, the line is optional.

What paper size should a CV for France use?

A4. It is the standard paper size in France and across Europe, and a US Letter CV can print with odd margins or a cut-off line.

Before you send:

  • Switch the page size to A4 and check that no section moves onto an extra page.
  • Keep margins comfortable, around 1.5 to 2 cm.
  • Export as PDF so the layout stays the same on every screen.

ResumeBuilder.ae lets you choose A4 or US Letter, so you can keep a US Letter version for North American roles and an A4 version for France.

Do French employers expect references on the CV?

Not usually. Listing referees on the CV is less common in France than in the UK or Ireland. Recruiters may ask for references later in the process, especially for senior roles.

What to do:

  • Leave referee names off the CV unless the advert asks.
  • Do not add "références disponibles sur demande"; it takes space and is assumed.
  • Prepare two or three people who know your work, ask their permission, and keep their details ready.

If you have a strong written recommendation from a former manager, you can mention it in your cover letter or bring it to the interview.

I am applying to France from abroad. What should my CV say about my availability?

State where you live now, when you could start and, if true, that you plan to move. French recruiters want to know quickly whether you can attend interviews and when you could join.

Example header line:
"Casablanca, Maroc – Disponible à partir de septembre 2026 – Mobilité : Paris, Lyon"

Also consider:

  • Your French level, stated clearly.
  • Work authorisation only if you already have it. Do not imply a permit you do not hold.
  • Interview availability by video, if you cannot travel at short notice.

Put more detail in the cover letter, such as why you are moving to France and why this employer.

International CV format guide

How should I write a French phone number on my CV?

Use the international format with +33 if recruiters outside France may call, or the local format with spaces in pairs if you apply only within France.

Examples:

  • International: "+33 6 12 34 56 78"
  • Local: "06 12 34 56 78"

Tips:

  • With +33, drop the leading 0.
  • French numbers are usually written in pairs of digits.
  • If you are abroad, use your current number with its country code and add a French number once you have one.

Make sure your voicemail message is clear, and check it often during your job search.

What does "mention" mean on a French diploma, and should I list it?

A "mention" is the honours grade on a French diploma, such as "mention bien" or "mention très bien" for the baccalauréat or a degree. List it if it is good; it is a simple way to show strong results.

Examples:
"Master Finance d'entreprise, Université Paris-Dauphine, 2024 – mention bien"
"Baccalauréat général, 2019 – mention très bien"

On an English CV for international employers, translate it: "with honours (mention bien)". If your diploma is from outside France, use your own system's terms instead, such as "Distinction" or "First Class Honours", and do not invent a French mention.

How do I make a French-language CV in ResumeBuilder.ae?

Choose French as the resume language on the Design tab. The CV is then laid out in French, and the builder screens can also be shown in French from the language menu in the top bar.

Points to know:

  • You write the content yourself in French. The example summaries and bullet points are in English for now, so treat them as ideas only.
  • French accented letters such as é, è, ç and à are supported in the PDF.
  • Choose A4 page size.
  • Photos are not supported in the PDF, and there is no date-of-birth field.

What is the difference between "savoir-faire" and "savoir-être" on a French CV?

"Savoir-faire" means hard skills, the technical abilities you can prove, and "savoir-être" means soft skills or personal qualities. French CVs and job adverts often use these terms, and some CVs split the skills section in two.

Example:
"Savoir-faire : comptabilité fournisseurs, rapprochements bancaires, SAP, Excel avancé
Savoir-être : rigueur, sens de l'organisation, travail en équipe"

Tips:

  • Put the hard skills first; they are easier for a recruiter to check.
  • Keep soft skills to a few, and prove them in your experience bullets.
  • Use the same words as the advert when they honestly describe you.

Open the resume builder

How should a "jeune diplômé" (recent graduate) CV look in France?

One page, with education and internships at the centre. French graduate CVs usually start with a "titre du CV" and put "Formation" near the top.

Suggested structure:

  • Titre du CV, for example "Jeune diplômée en marketing digital"
  • Formation: diploma, school, year, mention if good, key courses
  • Expériences: stages, alternance, student jobs
  • Compétences and Langues, with TOEIC or CEFR levels
  • Engagement associatif and Centres d'intérêt

Example bullet:
"Stage chef de projet (6 mois) – Lancement d'une campagne e-mailing auprès de 15 000 clients"

Keep it tidy and tailored. A focused one-page CV beats a long list of every course.

How do I handle a gap in my CV when applying in France?

Show it honestly with a short, neutral line, and mention anything useful you did during that time. French recruiters may ask about gaps in interviews, so a clear entry avoids surprises.

Examples:

  • "2024 – 2025 Congé parental (parental leave)"
  • "2023 Année sabbatique – voyage en Asie et formation en ligne Google Analytics"
  • "2022 Recherche d'emploi et formation en gestion de projet"

You do not need to give private reasons, such as health. A brief note is enough, and you can explain in your cover letter or interview if you want. Courses, volunteering and freelance work during a gap are all worth listing.

How to Explain an Employment Gap on Your Resume

How do I translate my job title into French without overstating it?

Use the closest standard French title and keep the level accurate. If there is no good equivalent, keep the original title and describe the role.

Examples:

  • "Account Manager" → "Chargé de clientèle" or keep "Account Manager"
  • "Office Administrator" → "Assistante administrative"
  • "Team Leader" → "Chef d'équipe"

Tips:

  • Many French companies use English titles, especially in tech and marketing, so the original may be fine.
  • Do not upgrade the title; "Manager" in English is not always "Directeur" in French.
  • Use bullets to show scope, for example the size of your team or budget.
