How to choose a resume template
Should my resume template match the country I am applying to?
Yes, at least in the basics: page size, whether a photo is expected, and the personal details commonly included vary by country, and your template should not fight those habits.
Key points to align:
- Page size: A4 for most countries, US Letter for the US and Canada.
- Photo: common in some Gulf and European applications, usually left out in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
- Length and density: some markets accept longer CVs, others favour concise resumes.
You do not need a completely different design for every country. A clean single-column template works almost everywhere; adjust page size and personal details for each market and check the employer's own instructions, since practice varies by company.
Spelling and terms are worth matching too. Employers in the UK, the Gulf and India usually say "CV", while US and Canadian employers say "resume", and British or American spelling should follow the country of the job. If you apply in several markets, save a clearly named version for each.
