Single-column vs two-column templates – Page 2

Will an ATS miss my skills if they are only in the sidebar?

It might. Depending on how the file is read, sidebar text can be skipped, merged with other lines or placed in the wrong field. Even when it is read, skills listed alone carry less weight with readers than skills shown in context.

Reduce the risk:

  • Mention your most important skills in your experience bullets too, for example: "Built monthly sales dashboards in Power BI for four regional teams."
  • Keep sidebar skills as plain text, not bars or icons.
  • Use the exact terms from the job description where they truthfully apply.

If your application goes through an online system and your skills are central to the role, a single-column layout with a full-width Skills section is the safer option.

Should my contact details go in the sidebar?

It is better to keep your name, email and phone number at the top of the page, in the main area or a full-width header. Contact details are the information software most needs to find, and the top of the page is where it looks first.

If your template places contact details in a sidebar:

  • Make sure your name is in large text at the very top.
  • Keep the email and phone as plain text, not icons alone.
  • Avoid putting contact details only in the page header or footer area of a Word file.

A full-width header followed by two columns is a good compromise if you want a sidebar for skills and languages while keeping contact details easy to find.

Does a two-column layout work for a two-page resume?

It can, but it often works less well than on one page. The sidebar content usually runs out on page one, leaving page two as a single narrow column with empty space beside it.

Ways to handle it:

  • Choose a template where page two switches to full width.
  • Keep the sidebar to page one and let your experience continue at full width afterwards.
  • Consider whether a single-column layout would present a two-page resume more cleanly.

If you are an experienced candidate with a genuine two-page history, single column is usually the better fit. Two-column designs tend to look their best on a well-edited one-page resume.

My sidebar ends halfway down the page, leaving a big empty space. What should I do?

Either balance the content or change the layout. A half-empty sidebar makes the page look unfinished.

Options:

  • Move a short section, such as Certifications or Languages, from the main column into the sidebar.
  • Trim the main column if it is much longer than needed.
  • Switch to a template with a narrower or shorter sidebar.
  • Use a full-width header with two columns only for the top part, if the template allows.

Do not fill the space with filler such as long hobby lists or generic soft skills. If the content simply does not divide evenly, a single-column layout will look more balanced.

Is a layout with dates in a narrow left column a two-column resume?

Technically it is a two-column layout, but a mild one. Dates sit in a narrow column on the left, and the job title, employer and bullets sit on the right.

How it compares:

  • It reads clearly to people, because each date lines up with its role.
  • Some software may separate the dates from their jobs if the layout is built with a table or separate text blocks.
  • If built as normal text with tab alignment, it usually reads in order.

If you like this style, test the PDF by copying the text out. Each date should appear next to its job title. If dates end up in a separate list, choose a template with dates on the same line as the job title instead.

Can I list my skills in several columns inside a single-column resume?

Yes, a short skills list spread across two or three columns can save space, but it carries some of the same reading-order risk as a two-column layout if built with a table.

Safer alternatives:

  • Group skills on labelled lines, for example: "Software: SAP, Oracle, Excel" and "Languages: English, Hindi, Arabic".
  • Separate skills with commas or a middle dot on one or two lines.

These approaches keep the page compact and read correctly as plain text. If you do use a skills grid, keep each cell to a single skill and check the copied-out text to make sure the skills appear as a sensible list.

How do columns work on an Arabic resume that reads right to left?

The layout mirrors: the reader starts at the top right, so in a two-column Arabic resume the main column usually sits on the right and the sidebar on the left.

Points to check:

  • Your main content, such as experience, should be where the eye lands first.
  • Mixed Arabic and English text, such as company names or email addresses, can wrap unexpectedly in narrow columns.
  • Numbers and dates should display in the order you intend.

A single column avoids most of these issues and is the simplest choice for Arabic resumes. On ResumeBuilder.ae you choose Arabic as the resume language on the Design tab, and the PDF is laid out right to left.

Does ResumeBuilder.ae offer two-column templates?

Yes. ResumeBuilder.ae offers both single-column and two-column designs, and two-column layouts are labelled as more complex so you know they carry extra reading-order risk.

The builder recommends single-column templates, such as ATS Classic or ATS Professional, as the safest default for applicant tracking systems. Use a two-column design mainly when a person will read your resume first.

All templates are free to use and preview, so you can compare a single-column and a two-column design before deciding. You can save up to 10 resumes, so you can keep one version of each if useful. You pay only if you download a PDF, at US$1.00 per export.

Should I keep both a single-column and a two-column version of my resume?

Yes, if you like a two-column design. Keeping both lets you use the safer layout for portals and the more designed one where a person reads it directly.

How to manage two versions:

  • Keep the content identical, so nothing contradicts.
  • Name files clearly, for example: "Omar-Haddad-Resume-Portal.pdf" and "Omar-Haddad-Resume.pdf".
  • Update both when you change a role, a date or your contact details.
  • Use the single-column version whenever you are unsure.

Builders that store content separately from the design make this easy, because you change the content once and switch templates. On ResumeBuilder.ae you can save up to 10 resumes.

Are two-column CVs common for jobs in the Gulf?

Designed two-column CVs, often with a sidebar for personal details and languages, are common among applicants in the UAE and wider Gulf. But many Gulf employers and recruitment agencies also use online portals, where a single column is safer.

A practical approach:

  • Use a single-column CV for portal applications and large employers.
  • A neat two-column CV can work for direct emails, walk-in interviews and referrals.
  • Place personal details often expected in the region, such as nationality, visa status or notice period, where they are easy to find in either layout.

Practice varies by employer, so follow any instructions in the job advert.

Which layout is more common for jobs in the US and UK?

Single-column resumes are the most common and conventional choice for US resumes and UK CVs, particularly in corporate, public-sector and graduate recruitment. Two-column designs are seen more in creative and start-up settings.

What employers in these markets typically expect:

  • A clear, reverse-chronological layout.
  • No photo and few personal details.
  • US Letter paper for the US, A4 for the UK.
  • Concise content, usually one or two pages.

A clean single column fits all of these well. If you use two columns, keep it restrained and test it, because many employers in both countries recruit through online systems.

How wide should the sidebar be on a two-column resume?

Keep the sidebar narrow, roughly a quarter to a third of the page width, so your main column has enough room for full bullet points.

Signs your sidebar is too wide:

  • Bullet points in the main column wrap onto three or more lines.
  • Job titles and dates do not fit on one line.
  • The sidebar draws more attention than your experience.

Signs it is too narrow:

  • Single words or short skill names break across lines.
  • Email addresses or links do not fit on a line.

Most two-column templates set the width for you. If the balance looks wrong with your content, try another template rather than adjusting it by hand.

Is a sidebar with a shaded background a problem?

A light shaded background is usually fine for people and does not stop software reading the text, as long as the text itself is real text with strong contrast.

Cautions:

  • Dark backgrounds with light text can be hard to read and may print poorly.
  • Some printers and photocopiers turn shaded areas grey or blotchy.
  • Text placed over an image background may not be readable as text.

If you choose a shaded sidebar, keep the shade pale, the text dark and the font a normal size. Print a copy in black and white to check it still looks clean.

Where does a reader's eye go first on a two-column resume?

For left-to-right languages, most readers start at the top left and move across and down. That means whatever sits at the top left, often your name or the top of a left sidebar, is noticed first.

How to use that:

  • Put your name and professional title at the top, ideally in a full-width header.
  • Make the main column clearly dominant, so the eye moves into your experience quickly.
  • Keep the sidebar visually lighter, with smaller headings and short items.

If a reader's first impression is a long list of skills or hobbies in the sidebar, the most important part of your resume, your experience, starts at a disadvantage.

Two-Column Resume Templates

What is the main advantage of a single-column resume?

Its main advantage is a single, predictable reading order. People and software both read it from top to bottom without having to choose between columns.

Other benefits:

  • Full page width for job titles, employers and bullet points.
  • Easy to read on phones and when printed.
  • Simple to edit and to extend onto a second page.
  • Less likely to be misread by applicant tracking systems.

The trade-off is that it can take a little more space, and some people find it looks plainer. Good spacing, clear headings and a single accent colour solve the looks problem without losing the benefits.

Simple Resume Templates

What is the main advantage of a two-column resume?

Its main advantage is efficient use of space: short items like skills, languages and contact details sit alongside your experience, which can keep a resume to one page with a modern look.

Other benefits:

  • Quick reference details are grouped together, easy to glance at.
  • The design can look polished and distinctive.
  • It suits concise resumes with several short sections.

The trade-offs are a second reading path, a narrower main column and more risk with some software. A two-column layout works best when a person reads the resume first and the sidebar is kept short and simple.

Does a two-column layout help a career changer?

It can help visually, by placing transferable skills and new qualifications in a sidebar beside your older experience. But a single column with a strong summary and a skills section near the top usually does the same job more safely.

What matters most for career changers:

  • A summary that names your target role and links your past experience to it.
  • A skills section that shows relevant, transferable abilities.
  • Experience bullets rewritten to highlight what is relevant to the new field.
  • Any new training or certifications made easy to find.

If you use a sidebar, do not let it become the only place your relevant skills appear. Show them in your experience too.

Can I put my summary in the sidebar?

It is better not to. Your summary is the first thing you want a reader to see, and it needs full sentences, which read awkwardly in a narrow column.

Place the summary:

  • Directly under your name and contact details, at full width or at the top of the main column.
  • In two to four lines, stating your target role, experience and strongest skills.

Example: "Logistics coordinator with six years in freight forwarding across the GCC, skilled in customs documentation and supplier coordination."

A short tagline under your name can work in a sidebar design, but the full summary belongs in the main area.

Can education go in the sidebar of a two-column resume?

Yes, if it is short, for example a degree, institution and year. Experienced candidates often put education in the sidebar because it is reference information rather than the main story.

Keep it in the main column if:

  • You are a student or recent graduate and education is your strongest selling point.
  • You have relevant coursework, projects, a thesis or honours to describe.
  • Your degree is a key requirement for the role.

In the sidebar, keep each entry to two or three short lines. Example: "BSc Civil Engineering, University of Sharjah, 2018". Long institution names may wrap, so check the preview.

Two-Column Resume Templates

Is a three-column resume ever a good idea?

Very rarely. Three columns make each column too narrow for proper bullet points, create several competing reading paths and are much more likely to confuse software.

Where you might see three-column ideas:

  • Infographic-style resumes in design fields.
  • A skills section split into three short lists inside an otherwise single-column page.

The second case can be acceptable if each item is short, though grouped lines are safer. For the overall page layout, stick to one column, or two at most. If you want to show design skill, use a portfolio for that rather than the structure of your resume.

Should an academic CV be single column or two column?

An academic CV should almost always be single column. Academic CVs are long and list-heavy, covering publications, research, teaching, grants and conferences, and these read best at full width in a clear order.

Why two columns struggle for academics:

  • Long publication references wrap badly in narrow columns.
  • The CV often runs to several pages, where a sidebar adds little.
  • Selection panels expect a conventional, easy-to-scan structure.

Use clear section headings such as Publications, Research, Academic Experience and Professional Memberships, and consistent formatting for every reference. A clean single-column template handles this well.

Does a two-column resume read differently as a PDF than as a Word file?

It can. The way text is stored differs between file types and between the tools that create them, so the same design may come out in a different order when software extracts the text.

What this means in practice:

  • A Word file built with tables or text boxes may be read differently from its PDF export.
  • A PDF made by a builder may store text in a cleaner order than one made by printing to PDF.
  • An image-based PDF, such as a scan, contains no readable text at all.

Whatever file you send, test it: copy all the text into a plain editor and check the order. Follow the employer's file-type instructions, and keep layouts simple when you are unsure.

Will the ATS check in the builder tell me if my columns are a problem?

The ATS-readiness check on ResumeBuilder.ae gives a rule-based estimate out of 100 of your resume's structure and completeness, with its rules shown in the tool. It is not an official score from any employer or ATS vendor.

Use it alongside your own reading-order test:

  • Review the check's suggestions for structure and missing information.
  • Copy your PDF text into a plain editor to see how the columns come out.
  • Choose a single-column template if you will apply through online portals.

The builder already labels two-column layouts as more complex, which is a useful signal. A high score does not guarantee an interview, so treat it as a guide rather than a pass mark.

Do job portals reject two-column resumes automatically?

There is no general rule that portals reject two-column resumes. The more realistic risk is that the system reads the text in the wrong order and fills your profile with mixed-up or missing information.

Why that still matters:

  • Recruiters may search the extracted data for skills or job titles, so misread text can make you harder to find.
  • A messy profile can create a poor first impression even if your original file looks good.

Each system and employer configuration is different, so nobody can promise how a particular portal will behave. Using a single-column layout and checking the auto-filled fields after uploading is the most reliable approach.

What Is an ATS and How Does It Read a Resume? · Simple Resume Templates

Is it a myth that ATS software cannot read two-column resumes?

Partly. It is not true that no system can read two columns; many handle simple two-column PDFs reasonably well. But it is true that columns add a risk of misreading that a single column does not have.

The balanced view:

  • Simple columns of real text are often read acceptably.
  • Columns built from tables, text boxes or graphics are more likely to cause problems.
  • Systems and employer settings vary, so results differ from one application to the next.

Because you usually cannot know which system you are facing, single column remains the safer default. Two columns are a reasonable choice when you know a person will read your resume first.

You can check your own file in a minute: select all the text in the PDF, paste it into a plain text editor and read it. If every job title, employer, date and bullet stays together, your columns are probably being stored in a sensible order. If lines from the sidebar appear in the middle of your experience, treat the layout as risky for online applications.
