Education and certifications – Page 2

How many certifications should I list?

List the ones that are relevant to the job and still valid, usually between two and eight. Quality matters more than quantity.

How to decide:

  • Keep certifications named in the job advert.
  • Keep major professional credentials in your field.
  • Remove short, unrelated or very basic ones.
  • Remove expired ones unless you label them clearly.

A long list of minor certificates can make your important credentials harder to see. If you have many, group them under subheadings such as "Professional certifications" and "Training", or keep the full list for your LinkedIn profile.

Should I include LinkedIn Learning or Udemy courses?

Include them only if they teach a skill the job needs and you can use that skill. Short video courses carry less weight than exams or degrees, so do not rely on them alone.

Good uses:

  • Learning a specific tool, such as Power BI, before applying for a role that uses it.
  • Showing you are keeping skills current after a career break.
  • Supporting a career change with relevant basics.

Format: "Power BI Essential Training, LinkedIn Learning, 2025".

Limit these to the most relevant two or three. A project that uses the skill is stronger evidence than the course certificate itself.

How do I show training provided by my employer?

List it in a Professional Training section or under the relevant job, focusing on courses that taught useful, recognisable skills.

Examples:

  • "Internal leadership programme for new supervisors, Gulf Retail Bank, 2024"
  • "Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt (company programme), 2023"
  • "Advanced Excel workshop, two days, 2022"

Keep it brief and relevant. Skip mandatory compliance training that every employee completes, such as basic induction, unless it is relevant to the job you want. If the training led to a recognised certification, list the certification itself in your Certifications section.

Do I need to include the education section if I have years of experience?

Yes, keep it, but make it short. Most employers still expect to see your highest qualification, and some application screening checks for a degree.

For experienced professionals:

  • One line per qualification is enough.
  • Place it after your experience.
  • Remove school details and coursework.
  • Dates are optional for older degrees.

Example:
"MBA, INSEAD | BEng Mechanical Engineering, University of Leeds"

If you have no degree, list your relevant certifications and training instead. Do not leave the section out entirely if the job advert lists an education requirement you meet.

How do I list an apprenticeship?

List it as experience if you worked as an apprentice, and the qualification in education if it led to one. You can also combine them if that is clearer.

Example in experience:
"Electrical Apprentice, Bright Power Contracting, 2020–2023
Installed wiring in residential and commercial buildings under supervision."

Example in education:
"Level 3 Electrical Installation Apprenticeship, completed 2023"

Apprenticeships show both practical skills and formal training, which many technical employers value. Include any licences or registrations you gained as a result in your certifications section.

Should I mention a study abroad or exchange semester?

Yes, briefly, especially if you are a student or graduate. It shows adaptability, independence and sometimes language skills.

Example under your degree:
"Exchange semester, University of Melbourne, Australia, 2023"

If the experience is relevant to the job, such as an international business role, you can add a short detail, like a project or module. For experienced professionals, it is optional and can be removed when you need space.

How do I list education when I changed universities?

List only the university where you completed your degree. Mention the first university only if you earned something there or it adds value.

Examples:

  • If you transferred and graduated: "BSc Biology, University of Toronto, 2024"
  • If the first university is relevant: "Coursework in Biology, McGill University, 2020–2021; BSc Biology, University of Toronto, 2024"

You do not need to explain transfers on a resume. If asked in an interview, a short, positive explanation is enough. Keep the education section simple and focused on what you achieved.

Should I include a PhD on my resume for non-academic jobs?

Yes. Present it as a qualification and as experience, focusing on the skills useful to industry: research, analysis, project management, writing and presenting.

Tips:

  • Keep the thesis title short and add a plain-English description.
  • Show transferable work: "Managed a three-year research project, coordinating lab time and collaborators across two universities."
  • Keep publications to the most relevant few, or move them to an appendix or link.
  • Use a resume format, not an academic CV, for most industry jobs.

Some candidates worry about looking overqualified. Showing practical outcomes and a clear reason for wanting the role helps more than hiding the degree.

How do I list a gap year or a pause in my studies?

You do not need to list a gap year in the education section. If it involved work, volunteering, travel or training that adds value, list those activities in the relevant section.

Examples:

  • Work: list it in your experience section.
  • Volunteering: in a Volunteer Work section.
  • Courses: in Professional Training.

If you paused your degree and returned, show the dates honestly, for example "2019–2024 (including one-year break for family reasons)". Most employers accept breaks without much concern, especially when you can show something you learned or did during that time.

How to Explain an Employment Gap on Your Resume

Should I include training certificates that every employee in my field has?

Usually only if the job advert asks for them or they need to be current for the role. Basic certificates that everyone holds do not help you stand out, but missing a required one can look like a gap.

Examples:

  • Often requested and worth listing: BLS for nurses, a valid driving licence for drivers, food hygiene for kitchen staff.
  • Usually not needed: generic induction or internal compliance modules.

Read the job advert. If it names a certificate, list it with its date and expiry so the employer can see it is valid. If it does not, include only those that are standard for your profession and leave out the rest.

How should I format dates in the education section?

Use the same format as the rest of your resume, usually month and year or just the year, and keep it consistent.

Common styles:

  • Year only: "2024"
  • Start and end: "2020 – 2024"
  • Month and year: "June 2024"
  • In progress: "Expected May 2027"

Many people show only the graduation year for degrees and full ranges for ongoing studies. Avoid mixing styles, such as "2024" in one place and "Sept 2020 – Jun 2024" in another. Make sure dates match your certificates, since background checks often compare them.

Should I include my education if it is unrelated to the job?

Yes, include your highest qualification, but keep it short. A degree in any subject still shows study, commitment and general skills.

How to handle it:

  • List the degree in one line, near the end of the resume.
  • Add a relevant module or project if any exist, such as a data analysis module for a data role.
  • Put more weight on relevant training, certifications or experience.

Example for a history graduate moving into marketing: "BA History, University of Kent, 2021" plus a Professional Training section with "Google Digital Marketing certificate, 2024".

Many people work in fields unrelated to their degree, and employers are used to seeing this.

How do I show professional qualifications like ACCA or CIMA that have levels?

Show the full name, the body, and your status, including the level reached if you are not yet fully qualified.

Examples:

  • "ACCA Member (FCCA), 2022"
  • "ACCA Affiliate, all exams passed, 2025"
  • "CIMA Management Level passed, studying for Strategic Level"
  • "CFA Level II candidate, exam scheduled 2027"

Using the official status terms helps employers who know the qualification. Do not use designation letters, such as "CPA" or "CFA" after your name, unless you are fully qualified and entitled to use them.

Can I put my professional designation after my name at the top?

Yes, if you have fully earned it and it is relevant, for example "Sara Ahmed, CPA" or "Rahul Menon, PMP". Keep it to one or two of the most important designations.

When it helps:

  • Professions where the designation is a key requirement: accounting, project management, engineering, HR.
  • When you want the most important credential visible immediately.

When to avoid it:

  • If you are still studying for the qualification.
  • If the designation is not relevant to the job.
  • Long strings of letters that make your name hard to read.

Still list the designation with its issuer and date in your certifications section.

How do I list certifications with an ID or credential number?

Add the credential ID only if the employer is likely to verify it online or the job advert asks for it. Otherwise, the name, issuer and date are enough.

Example:
"Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, 2025 (Credential ID available on request)"

or, where verification is expected:
"AWS Certified Developer – Associate, 2025, Validation No. [number]"

Many certification bodies provide online verification links or badges. You can put the link on your LinkedIn profile instead. Never include personal identification numbers such as a passport or national ID number with your certifications.

How can a career changer use education to support a new direction?

Put the most relevant recent qualification first, mention it in your summary, and show what you did with it in a project or practical work.

Steps:

  • Lead with new training, such as a certificate, diploma or bootcamp.
  • Add a project or placement that applied the learning.
  • Keep your older degree but give it less space if it is unrelated.

Example summary line: "Former teacher with a recent CIPD Level 5 qualification, moving into learning and development."

Education is often the clearest bridge into a new field. Make sure the reader sees it early instead of finding it at the end of a long work history.

Should I list language courses in the education section?

Only if they are formal or relevant. Usually, it is better to show the language itself in a Languages section and mention a recognised test result there.

When a language course belongs in education:

  • A full-time language programme or year abroad.
  • A university-level qualification in the language.

When it does not:

  • Short evening classes or apps; just show the level you reached in your Languages section.

Example in languages: "French: B2 (DELF B2, 2024)". This tells the reader what they need to know, without adding a course entry.

How do I list education on a UAE or GCC resume?

Use the same basic format as elsewhere: degree, institution, country and year. Many GCC employers like to see the country of study clearly and may ask for attested certificates later.

Example:
"Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical), Manipal University, India, 2019"

Tips:

  • Include the country if it is not obvious from the university name.
  • Keep the degree name exactly as on your certificate.
  • List professional certifications separately, as they are often valued highly in the region.
  • Follow any instructions in the job advert about required qualifications.

Requirements for certificate attestation or professional licensing depend on the employer and profession, so check them directly rather than relying on general advice.

How do I list education for jobs in India?

List degrees in reverse order with the university, year and your percentage or CGPA, as many Indian employers expect grades, especially for freshers.

Example:
"B.Tech, Computer Science, VIT Vellore, 2024 – CGPA 8.2/10
Class XII (CBSE), Delhi Public School, 2020 – marks as on your mark sheet (only if requested)"

Note: some employers ask for Class X and XII marks; include them if they are requested or you are a fresher. Experienced candidates can usually keep only their degree. Write grades exactly as on your mark sheets.

Is it OK to list a degree from an unaccredited institution?

You must describe it accurately, but be careful: some employers and regulators do not recognise degrees from unaccredited institutions, and some so-called degree providers are not genuine.

What to do:

  • Check whether the institution is recognised by the official authority in its country.
  • If it is genuine but not widely recognised, list it accurately and focus on what you learned and did.
  • If you have doubts, rely more on your experience, certifications and recognised training.

Never present a degree from a diploma mill, a provider that sells degrees without real study, as a genuine qualification. Background checks can uncover this, and it can lead to a withdrawn offer or dismissal.

Should I list a degree I am about to start?

Only if it is directly relevant and confirmed, for example an accepted place starting soon. Label it clearly.

Example:
"MSc Supply Chain Management, Heriot-Watt University Dubai (starting September 2027, part time)"

This can help explain career plans or why you are looking for a role with particular hours. It is less useful than qualifications you already hold, so keep it brief.

If you have not yet been accepted, leave it out. Listing a course you might take can confuse readers and is not a qualification yet.

Where do I put certifications if I only have one?

You can still use a Certifications section with one entry, or combine it into a section called "Education and Certifications" to save space.

Examples:

  • Separate: "Certifications: Certified Bookkeeper, AIPB, 2024"
  • Combined section: list your degree, then the certification beneath.

If the certification is important for the job, also mention it in your summary: "Certified bookkeeper with three years of experience in small-business accounts."

A single relevant certification is valuable. Make sure it is easy to find, rather than hidden at the end of a long section.

Should I mention exams like IELTS, TOEFL or GMAT in education?

Put language test results such as IELTS or TOEFL in your Languages section. Put admission tests such as GMAT or GRE only if the employer asks for them, which is uncommon outside some graduate schemes.

Examples:

  • Languages: "English: IELTS Academic 7.5 (2025)".
  • Education extra, if requested: "GMAT 700 (2024)".

These scores expire or become less relevant with time. Use a recent result and include the year. For most experienced roles, admission test scores are not needed.

How do I add education and certifications in the resume builder?

In ResumeBuilder.ae, use the Education section for degrees and diplomas, and the separate Certifications and Professional Training sections for credentials and courses. Sections can be reordered.

Practical tips:

  • Add each qualification as its own entry, with the institution and dates.
  • Use Certifications for exam-based credentials and Professional Training for courses.
  • Move Education above Work Experience if you are a student or graduate.
  • Check the preview to make sure dates and formatting are consistent.

If you import an existing resume in PDF or Word, check each imported section carefully, as education entries may need tidying after import.

Should I list my school or university clubs under education?

Only briefly, and only if they show relevant leadership or skills. For more substantial roles, use a separate section such as Activities, Leadership or Volunteer Work.

Examples under education:
"Activities: President, Engineering Society; Member, Debate Club"

Example as a separate entry:
"Events Lead, University Careers Society, 2023–2024
Organised a careers fair with 25 employers and over 500 student visitors."

For students and recent graduates, these activities can show initiative. As you gain work experience, reduce them to one line or remove them.
