How do I explain a research gap between my master's and PhD, or after my PhD?

Show what you did in that time, briefly and positively. Many researchers have periods of job searching, fixed-term contracts or personal commitments between degrees.

Options:

  • List short contracts, research assistant work or teaching.
  • Mention courses, independent projects or consulting.
  • Use a one-line entry such as "Career break for family commitments, 2023" if you want to show the dates.

You do not need to give private details. Make sure your dates are accurate and consistent across your resume, LinkedIn and application forms.
