Students and Fresh Graduates

Skills for student and graduate resumes

Students and fresh graduates often have more skills than they realise, but struggle to list them in a way employers believe. This topic covers which skills to put on a student or graduate resume, how many to include, how to describe levels honestly, and how to prove soft skills such as teamwork, leadership and communication with real examples. It also explains how to present software, programming and lab skills, languages and test scores, online courses and entry-level certifications. It helps anyone building a first skills section, from school leavers to new graduates changing direction.

What skills should a student or fresh graduate put on a resume?

List the skills the jobs you want ask for, that you genuinely have, and that you can back up with an example. For most students that means a mix of technical skills, software and a few well-evidenced soft skills.

A useful structure:

  • Technical or subject skills from your degree, such as financial analysis, lab techniques or CAD.
  • Software and tools you can actually use, such as Excel, Python, Canva or SPSS.
  • Languages, with an honest level.
  • Two or three soft skills that your bullets prove, such as teamwork or customer service.

Start by reading five or six adverts for the role you want and noting the skills that appear again and again. Then match those against what you can honestly claim.

Example skills line: "Tools: Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP), Power BI, SQL (basic)". Keep the list focused; ten to fifteen well-chosen items beat a long list of everything you have touched once. Leave out things every student can do, such as "internet research" or "email".

How many skills should I list on a graduate resume?

Around eight to fifteen skills is a sensible range for most graduate resumes. That is enough to show breadth and match the job advert, but short enough that each item looks credible.

Signs your list is too long:

  • It includes things you have only seen once in a lecture.
  • It repeats the same skill in different words ("MS Word", "Word processing", "Microsoft Word").
  • It includes very general items such as "Internet" or "Email".

Signs it is too short: key requirements from the advert are missing even though you have them. Group your skills into two or three categories so a longer list still reads easily.

Do hard skills or soft skills matter more on a student resume?

Both matter, but hard skills are easier to prove on paper, so they usually take up more of the skills section. Soft skills are better shown through bullets and examples elsewhere on the resume.

How to balance them:

  • Skills section: mostly hard skills, such as software, languages, technical methods.
  • Experience, projects and activities: bullets that show soft skills in action.
  • Summary: one or two soft skills linked to evidence.

Example: rather than listing "Teamwork" alone, write a project bullet such as "Coordinated a five-person team to deliver a market research report two days before the deadline." Employers hiring graduates often say they value attitude and communication, but they need to see proof, not adjectives.

How do I prove teamwork on my resume when I'm still a student?

Describe a specific situation where you worked with others towards a goal, and say what your part was. Teamwork claims are only convincing when they include your role and the outcome.

Sources of teamwork evidence for students:

  • Group assignments and capstone projects.
  • Part-time jobs and shift work.
  • Sports teams, societies and event committees.
  • Volunteering and community activities.

Example bullet: "Shared research and writing for a four-person marketing plan, taking responsibility for competitor analysis; the team received the highest mark in the module."

Avoid "Excellent team player" on its own. One concrete bullet does more than three adjectives.

How can I show leadership skills without ever having a leadership job?

Show moments when you took responsibility, organised other people or made decisions, even without a formal title. Graduate employers look for potential, not a manager title.

Places to find leadership evidence:

  • Leading a group project or dividing tasks.
  • Running an event, a club activity or a fundraiser.
  • Training or guiding new staff at a part-time job.
  • Mentoring younger students or captaining a team.

Example: "Organised a careers panel with three alumni speakers, managing invitations, room booking and promotion for an audience of 60 students."

Be precise about your role. If you were one of several organisers, say "co-organised". Overclaiming leadership is easy to spot in interviews.

How do I show communication skills as a fresh graduate?

Point to things you have written, presented or explained to others, and make the audience and purpose clear. "Good communication skills" means little without evidence.

Evidence you can use:

  • Presentations: "Presented final-year project findings to a panel of three lecturers and an industry guest."
  • Writing: reports, a dissertation, blog posts, articles for a student magazine.
  • Customer contact: handling queries in a part-time job.
  • Explaining: tutoring, peer mentoring, training new staff.
  • Languages: working or studying in more than one language.

Your resume itself is evidence too. Clear, error-free writing tells employers more about your communication than any skills list.

What is a good example of problem-solving on a student resume?

A good example states the problem, what you did and what changed. It can come from a project, a job or an activity.

Examples:

  • "Found and fixed a data error that was skewing results in a group research project, by checking each source file against the original survey."
  • "Reduced waiting times at the café counter during rush hour by suggesting a separate collection point for online orders."
  • "Rewrote the society's sign-up form after members reported confusion, cutting incomplete registrations."

Keep it short and honest. If you do not know the exact result, describe the improvement in plain words instead of inventing numbers.

How do I show time management skills on my resume?

Show that you handled several commitments at once and still delivered. The facts do the work, so you rarely need the phrase "time management" at all.

Ways to show it:

  • Working part time alongside full-time study.
  • Meeting deadlines for several projects in the same term.
  • Holding a society role during your final year.
  • Completing an online course or certification in your own time.

Example summary line: "Final-year engineering student who has worked 15 hours a week throughout university while leading the robotics society."

In interviews you may be asked how you managed it, so be ready with a simple explanation, such as how you planned your week.

Should I list Microsoft Office on my resume, or is it too basic?

List it if the job uses it, but be specific. "Microsoft Office" alone is so common that it adds little; naming the programs and what you can do with them adds value.

Better ways to write it:

  • "Excel: pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, charts, basic macros"
  • "PowerPoint: designing and presenting slide decks"
  • "Word: long reports with styles, tables of contents and references"

For admin, finance, business and many graduate roles, strong Excel skills are worth highlighting. For technical roles where everyone uses Office, you can leave it off or keep it short to make room for more specialised tools.

How do I describe my Excel level honestly?

Name the features you can actually use, rather than choosing a label like "advanced" that means different things to different people.

A rough guide:

  • Basic: entering data, simple formulas (SUM, AVERAGE), formatting, sorting and filtering.
  • Intermediate: VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, IF statements, pivot tables, charts, conditional formatting.
  • Advanced: complex nested formulas, Power Query, macros or VBA, dashboards, data modelling.

Example: "Excel (intermediate): pivot tables, XLOOKUP, charts and conditional formatting."

Many employers test Excel during interviews or assessments. If you list a feature, make sure you can use it without help. If you are close to the next level, a short online course and a practice project can help you claim it honestly. Avoid words like "expert" or "master" unless you could teach the features to someone else.

Should I use stars or skill bars to rate my skills?

It is better not to. Stars, bars and dots look attractive, but they are vague (what does three out of five mean?), they can be misread by applicant tracking systems, and they invite tricky interview questions.

Better alternatives:

  • Words with a clear meaning: "Spanish (B2)", "Python (intermediate)".
  • Specific features: "Excel: pivot tables, XLOOKUP".
  • Evidence: "Python: used for data cleaning in final-year project".

If you choose a template that shows skill bars, consider switching to a simpler layout for online applications. Plain text skills are easier for both people and software to read.

How should a computer science student list programming languages?

Group them by how well you know them, and back the main ones up with projects. Recruiters care more about what you built than the length of the list.

Example skills block:
"Languages: Python, Java, SQL (proficient); JavaScript, C (familiar)
Frameworks and tools: Flask, React, Git, Docker (basic)"

Tips:

  • Put the languages the job advert asks for first, if you know them.
  • Make sure at least your main languages appear in your project bullets.
  • Leave out languages you used only once for a small lab exercise.

Interviewers often pick any language on your list and ask questions, so only include ones you could discuss confidently.

Can I list a skill I only used once in a class?

Usually not on its own. If you used a tool once and could not use it now without help, listing it can backfire when an interviewer asks about it.

Options:

  • Leave it off if it is not important for the job.
  • If it matters for the job, describe it honestly, for example "Introductory knowledge of MATLAB (one module)".
  • Use it again in a small project, then list it with real evidence.

A short, credible list builds more trust than a long one that falls apart in an interview. Employers expect students to be learning, so honest labels such as "familiar" or "introductory" are fine.

Should I include languages I studied at school but don't speak well?

Only if you can honestly describe a usable level, and label it clearly. A school language you cannot use is better left off, especially if the job involves that language.

Ways to describe levels:

  • A simple scale: Native, Fluent, Professional working, Conversational, Basic.
  • The CEFR scale used in Europe: A1 to C2.

Examples: "French (basic, A2)", "Hindi (conversational)".

If a job mentions a language, the employer may test it. Only claim a level you could demonstrate in a short conversation. Basic levels can still help in customer-facing roles or with international employers, as long as you are clear about them.

How do I show my IELTS or TOEFL score on my resume?

List it in your Languages section or under Certifications, with the test name, your overall score and the year. Include it when the employer, university or country asks for English evidence, or when English is not your first language and you want to show your level.

Examples:

  • "English: IELTS Academic, overall band 7.5 (2025)"
  • "English: TOEFL iBT, overall score 104 (2024)"

You do not need to list each section score unless asked. Test results often have a validity period set by the organisation that uses them, so check whether a recent result is needed. If your score is not strong, you can describe your English level instead and provide the certificate if asked.

I'm applying in the UAE. Should I list Arabic if I only speak a little?

List it only with an honest level, such as "Arabic (basic)" or "Arabic (conversational)". Many employers in the Gulf value Arabic, but they may check it in an interview, so overclaiming can harm you.

Good ways to describe it:

  • "Arabic: basic (greetings and everyday phrases)"
  • "Arabic: conversational; studying at evening classes"
  • "Arabic: reading and writing (intermediate), speaking (basic)"

If you are currently taking a course, mention it. Showing that you are learning the local language can be a positive point, as long as you are clear about where you are now.

Should I put online courses on my student resume?

Yes, when they are relevant to the job and you completed them. Online courses show initiative and can fill gaps that your degree did not cover, such as data analysis, digital marketing or coding.

How to list them:

  • Use a section called "Courses and Certifications" or "Professional Training".
  • Include the course name, the provider and the year.
  • Choose only the most relevant ones.

Example: "Introduction to Data Analysis with Python | Online course provided by a university through an online learning platform | 2025"

Then use what you learned. A course plus a small project you built with it is much more convincing than the course on its own.

How many online course certificates should I list?

Usually three to six of the most relevant ones. A long list of short courses can look like box-ticking and pushes more important information down the page.

How to choose:

  • Keep courses directly linked to the job advert.
  • Prefer longer, assessed courses over short videos.
  • Prefer recent courses over old ones.
  • Combine very small courses into one line if they share a theme.

Example combined line: "Short courses in Google Analytics, SEO basics and email marketing (2024 to 2025)."

If you have many certificates, keep a complete list on your LinkedIn profile and use the resume for the best ones.

Where do online course certificates go: Education, Certifications or Training?

Put them under Certifications if the course ended with an assessed certificate, or under Professional Training or Courses if it was a learning course. Keep your Education section for your formal degree and school results.

Simple rules:

  • Degrees, diplomas and school qualifications: Education.
  • Exams from a professional body or vendor: Certifications.
  • Online courses, workshops and bootcamps: Courses or Professional Training.

If you have only one or two items, a combined heading such as "Certifications and Courses" is fine. Use standard headings so recruiters and applicant tracking systems recognise the section easily.

Are free online certificates worth anything to employers?

They can be, but their value comes from what they show about you, not from the certificate itself. Employers rarely treat a short free certificate as a qualification, but they may see it as evidence of interest and initiative.

Free certificates help most when:

  • They fill a clear gap, such as Excel for a business graduate.
  • They come from a recognised university or organisation.
  • You can show what you did with the skill.
  • They are recent and relevant to the role.

They help least when they are very short, unrelated or listed in large numbers. Treat them as a supporting detail and let your projects and experience carry the main story.

What's the difference between a course certificate and a professional certification?

A course certificate shows you completed a course; a professional certification shows you passed an assessment set by a recognised body against a published standard. Employers usually give certifications more weight.

In practice:

  • Course certificate: issued after finishing a learning course, sometimes with quizzes. Example: an online introduction to project management.
  • Professional certification: an exam or assessment from a professional body or technology vendor, often with renewal rules. Examples include entry-level cloud or networking certifications, or the first level of an accounting qualification.

On your resume, list the full name and issuer exactly as written on the certificate, so it is not mistaken for something bigger. Never describe a course certificate as a certification you do not hold.

Fresh Graduate resume builder · Open this answer on its own page: What's the difference between a course certificate and a professional certification?

Can I list a certification I'm still studying for?

Yes, if you clearly mark it as in progress and give an expected date. Employers like to see that you are working towards something relevant.

Examples:

  • "ACCA Applied Knowledge exams, in progress (2 of 3 passed), expected completion 2027"
  • "AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, exam booked for March 2026"

Do not list it in a way that suggests you already hold it. If you abandon the study, remove it. If you have passed some parts, state exactly which ones, because employers may check with the awarding body.

Which entry-level certifications are useful for students?

The useful ones are those linked to the jobs you want, and recognised by employers in that field. There is no single list that suits everyone.

Examples by field (not requirements, just common starting points):

  • IT and cloud: fundamentals exams from major cloud or networking vendors.
  • Data and business: certificates in Excel, data analysis or business intelligence tools.
  • Marketing: analytics and digital advertising certificates from the platforms themselves.
  • Accounting and finance: the first stages of professional qualifications such as ACCA or CMA.
  • Project work: entry-level project management certificates.

Before paying for anything, check adverts for the roles you want and see which names come up. Ask lecturers and your careers service too.

Fresh Graduate resume builder

How do I find out which skills employers want from graduates?

Read real job adverts for the roles you want and look for patterns. The skills that appear in most adverts are the ones to build and show.

A simple method:

  • Collect eight to ten adverts for the same type of entry-level role.
  • Highlight skills, tools and qualifications.
  • Count which ones appear most often.
  • Compare that list with your own skills and note the gaps.

Other useful sources: your university careers service, alumni on LinkedIn, employer graduate pages and official occupation databases such as O*NET, which describe the tasks and skills for hundreds of jobs. The job-description comparison in a resume builder can also show which of an advert's frequent terms are missing from your resume. Repeat this exercise every few months, because the tools employers ask for change over time.

Should I change my skills section for each graduate job I apply to?

Yes, lightly. Keep a master list of every skill you can honestly claim, then for each application move the most relevant ones to the front and drop the ones that do not matter for that role.

A quick routine:

  • Read the advert and note the skills it mentions.
  • Make sure the ones you have appear in your skills section, using the same wording where it is accurate.
  • Remove a few unrelated skills to keep the section short.

Example: applying for a data analyst role, put SQL and Excel first; for a marketing assistant role, put Canva, social media tools and copywriting first. Never add skills you do not have just because they are in the advert.
