How should I handle knockout questions so I do not rule myself out by mistake?
Read each one slowly and answer exactly and honestly, because a careless click can end an application. Knockout questions are screening questions in an application form that check basic requirements, such as "Do you have the right to work in this country?", "Do you hold a valid driving licence?" or "Do you have at least three years of experience in this role?" Employers can set them so that applications with certain answers are declined or set aside.
How to handle them:
- Read each question slowly; some are worded negatively or ask about a very specific requirement.
- Answer honestly. Untrue answers usually come out during interviews, document checks or background checks, and can lead to a withdrawn offer.
- If a question does not fit your situation neatly, look for a comments box or contact the recruiter to ask.
- Check the advert's requirements before you start, so the questions do not surprise you.
If you are rejected because of a genuine knockout requirement you do not meet, it is usually better to focus on roles where you do meet it, rather than trying again with different answers.
