How the typing test works
- Choose a length and a text. Tests run for 15 seconds up to 10 minutes, or without a time limit. Pick simple words, everyday sentences, paragraphs, business English, punctuation, numbers and symbols, or paste your own text.
- Start typing. The timer starts with your first key, not before. Each character turns green when it is right and red with a wavy underline when it is wrong.
- Follow the guide if you need it. The on-screen keyboard lights up the next key, the hands show which finger should press it, and a line of text spells it out, for example “Press F with your left index finger”.
- Fix mistakes or keep going. Backspace corrects a mistake. In strict mode Backspace is turned off, so every mistake stays in your result.
- Read your result. You see net and gross words per minute, accuracy, the keys you missed and a recommended next step. You can retry the same text, practise the keys you missed, copy your result or print a result certificate.

How WPM and accuracy are calculated
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). Because real words have different lengths, typing tests count a “word” as any five characters, including spaces and punctuation. This tool uses the same formulas for every test, lesson and practice:
- Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes.
- Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected mistakes ÷ minutes). Mistakes you leave in the text lower your net speed; mistakes you fix with Backspace do not.
- Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all character keystrokes × 100. A mistake you later fix still counts against accuracy, because it was a wrong key press. Backspace itself does not count.
Example: in a one-minute test you type 250 characters and leave 3 mistakes uncorrected. Gross speed is 250 ÷ 5 = 50 WPM, and net speed is 50 − 3 = 47 WPM. If you pressed 260 character keys in total and 248 were right, accuracy is 248 ÷ 260 = 95.4%.
Speeds are shown after the first two seconds, because a single quick word would give a misleading number. Results shorter than 5 seconds are not saved, and personal bests count from 15 seconds.
Short tests and longer sessions
A 15-second or 30-second test measures your top speed on a short burst. A 1-minute test is the most common benchmark. A 5-minute or 10-minute test shows the speed you can keep up, which is usually lower and closer to what you will manage in a real working day. If you are preparing for an assessment, practise at the length the employer uses.
Typing tests for job applications
Office, administration, data entry and customer service roles often ask for good typing skills, and some employers run their own typing test. Measure yourself several times and quote a figure you reach reliably, not your single best result. Accuracy matters as much as speed: a fast result with many mistakes is rarely useful at work.
The printable result certificate shows your result, the test length and the date. It is a self-assessed online test: it is not supervised, verified or accredited by ResumeBuilder.ae or by any employer. When you add typing speed to your resume, list it with your other skills, for example “Typing: 55 WPM with 97% accuracy”.
Keyboard layouts
The on-screen keyboard and the finger guide follow the standard US English QWERTY layout, or the UK English layout if you choose it in the settings. Your typing is always checked against the characters you actually type, so your score is correct whatever keyboard you use. If your computer uses another layout, such as AZERTY or QWERTZ, the tool tells you that the highlighted keys may not match your keyboard.
Privacy
The test runs in your browser. The text you type is not sent to our server or to anyone else. If you keep “Save my progress” switched on, your results (numbers only, never your text) are stored in this browser so you can see your progress; you can delete them at any time on the practice page.
Frequently asked questions
Is the typing test free?
Yes. The test, the lessons, the practice modes and the result certificate are free, with no account and no sign-up.
What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM subtracts the mistakes you left uncorrected, so it shows your useful speed. Net WPM is the figure to quote.
What is a good typing speed?
It depends on the job. Aim for high accuracy first, ideally 95% or more, then build speed with regular practice. Track your own progress over time rather than comparing yourself with others.
Why did my test pause?
The timer stops if you switch to another tab or window, or click outside the typing area, so the time is never counted while you are away. Click the text or press Continue, then type the next character to carry on.
Can I paste text into the test?
Not into the typing area: pasting is turned off so results stay fair. To practise your own text, choose “Custom text” and paste it into the box above the test.
Does the tool know which finger I used?
No. A browser only knows which key was pressed, not which finger pressed it. The tool shows the recommended finger for every key, and it is up to you to follow it.
Can I use it on a phone or tablet?
Yes, the test works with on-screen keyboards. Touch typing is best learned on a physical keyboard, though, and phone keyboards may auto-correct words, which can affect your result.
