Tailoring a resume to each job posting
What is a quick workflow for tailoring my resume to a job posting?
Use a short, repeatable routine of about 20 to 30 minutes, starting from a strong base resume.
- Read the posting twice. Mark the job title, required qualifications, main tools and the first few duties.
- Make a copy of your base resume and name it for this job.
- Update the headline to match the role, if it honestly fits.
- Rewrite the summary in two to four lines, naming the role and your two or three strongest matching points.
- Reorder bullets under each job so the most relevant ones come first.
- Adjust your skills list so the posting's main requirements you have appear first.
- Swap in the employer's terms where they describe the same work.
- Cut or shorten anything that does not help for this job.
- Compare against the posting once more, then proofread, especially company names.
Example: For a "Receptionist, Medical Clinic" posting, step 5 might bring "Scheduled patient appointments" above "Handled courier deliveries".
This routine keeps every application honest, consistent and quick.
