Experienced and older job seekers
What is an "Earlier Career" section, and how do I write one?
An "Earlier Career" section is a short block at the end of your work history that lists older roles in one line each, without bullet points. It keeps your resume to a sensible length while showing that your career goes back further.
How to write it:
- Use a heading such as "Earlier Career" or "Previous Experience".
- Give each role one line: job title, employer and city or country.
- Add dates if you wish; if you leave them out, do so for the whole section rather than for selected lines.
- Order the lines from most recent to oldest.
Example:
"Earlier Career
Branch Supervisor, Coastline Bank, Dubai
Customer Service Officer, Coastline Bank, Dubai
Sales Associate, Northgate Retail, Kochi"
This works well when your early roles show where your skills came from but do not need detail. If one older role holds an achievement the employer will care about, give it a full entry instead or mention the achievement in your summary.
