Cover letter basics

What should a cover letter include?

A cover letter should include your contact details, a greeting, the job you are applying for, why you want it, evidence that you fit, and a polite closing with your name.

The key parts:

  • Header: your name, phone, email and city; the date; and, where known, the employer's name and address.
  • Greeting: the hiring manager's name if you know it, or a neutral greeting such as "Dear Hiring Manager".
  • Opening: the role title, where you saw it, and a clear reason you are interested.
  • Middle: two or three examples showing you meet the main requirements of the advert.
  • Motivation: one or two sentences on why this employer or team appeals to you.
  • Closing: thanks, availability for an interview, and a sign-off such as "Kind regards".

Example middle sentence: "At Al Safa Logistics, I scheduled deliveries for 25 drivers and cut late drops by reorganising routes each morning."

Keep it to one page. Anything that does not help show your fit for this role can be left out.
