Motivation letters and personal statements
How do I write a motivation letter for a master's programme?
Show how your previous studies or work led you to this specific master's, what you will bring to it and what you plan to do afterwards. Admissions readers look for academic preparation, clear goals and fit with the programme.
Include:
- Your degree and the parts most relevant to the master's: modules, thesis, projects.
- Any work experience that shaped your interest.
- Two or three specific features of the programme: courses, specialisations, labs, partnerships.
- Your career goal and how the programme helps.
Example: "My bachelor's thesis on groundwater quality in Rajasthan introduced me to remote sensing, and your programme's GIS specialisation and fieldwork module would give me the skills to work on water planning for regional authorities."
Avoid generic praise. Refer to details that only apply to this programme.
