Cover letters for special situations

How do I write a cover letter with no work experience?

Build the letter around your education, projects, volunteering and personal qualities, each supported by a concrete example. Employers hiring for entry-level roles expect limited experience; they want to see potential, reliability and genuine interest.

Structure:

  • Opening: the role and a line about why you want it.
  • Middle: two examples that show relevant skills, such as a university project, a part-time job, a club role or volunteering.
  • Close: your availability and enthusiasm to learn.

Example: "As treasurer of my university's business society, I managed a budget and kept records for 12 events, which gave me practical experience with the accuracy this accounts assistant role requires."

Avoid writing "although I have no experience". Describe what you do have instead. Keep it to about three or four short paragraphs.
