What date format should I use when entering my jobs?
Use a short month and year, written the same way everywhere, such as "Jan 2021 to Mar 2024". Consistency matters more than the exact style you choose.
Good options:
- "Jan 2021 to Mar 2024"
- "January 2021 to March 2024"
- "2021 to 2024" (years only, if you use it for every job)
Avoid:
- Number-only dates such as "03/2021". Readers in different countries may read them differently, and they are harder to scan.
- Mixing styles, for example "Jan 2021" in one job and "2019-06" in another.
- Exact days, which add nothing.
Pick the separator you like, such as "to" or a dash, and use it throughout. Applicant tracking systems commonly read standard month-and-year formats, so a simple, consistent style is the safest choice. Before downloading, scan the dates column in the preview from top to bottom; inconsistent formats are easy to spot there.
