Keeping several versions for different jobs

What is a master resume and how is it different from the one I send?

A master resume is your private, complete record: every job, project, course, award and result you might ever want to mention. The resume you send is a shorter selection from it, chosen for one type of role.

Keeping the two apart helps because:

  • You never lose old details when you cut a version down to one or two pages.
  • Tailoring becomes choosing and reordering, not rewriting from memory.
  • Numbers and dates stay consistent across all versions.

The master can be long and untidy. Write full bullets there, including ones you rarely use. When you build a version for an application, copy in only what supports that role, and keep the master updated whenever you finish a project or change jobs.
