Network Engineer resume
This guide helps network engineers and administrators, from NOC and junior roles to senior engineers and architects, write resumes that show what they designed, built and kept running. It covers summaries, grouped skills by vendor and protocol, example bullets for campus, WAN, SD-WAN, wireless, data centre, cloud and firewall work, and ways to show uptime and troubleshooting results. It also explains how to list CCNA, CCNP and other certifications, use home labs, write for Gulf employers, and move from help desk into networking or from networking into security or cloud roles. All examples are fictional.
How do I write a network engineer resume summary?
State your focus (enterprise LAN/WAN, data centre, service provider, security or cloud networking), the vendors you work with, the scale and one result. Network hiring managers look for vendor and protocol experience quickly.
Example summaries (fictional):
- "Network engineer with six years supporting enterprise networks for a hospital group of 12 sites. Configure Cisco Catalyst switching, OSPF and BGP routing, and Fortinet firewalls. Led an SD-WAN rollout that cut branch outages."
- "Data centre network engineer experienced in Arista and Cisco Nexus spine-leaf fabrics, VXLAN EVPN and network automation with Python and Ansible."
Keep it to two or three sentences. List vendors and protocols you could discuss in a technical interview.
Which technical skills should a network engineer list?
List routing and switching protocols, vendors and platforms, security, wireless, monitoring and automation tools, grouped by area. Readers often search by vendor and protocol names.
Example grouping:
- Routing and switching: OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, VLANs, STP, HSRP or VRRP, MPLS.
- Vendors: Cisco IOS/IOS-XE/NX-OS, Juniper Junos, Arista EOS, Aruba, HPE.
- Security: Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA or FTD, site-to-site and remote access VPN, NAC.
- Wireless: Cisco or Aruba controllers, site surveys.
- WAN: SD-WAN (Cisco Viptela, Fortinet, VMware VeloCloud), internet and MPLS circuits.
- Monitoring and automation: SolarWinds, PRTG, Wireshark, Python, Ansible, NetBox.
Only list what you have configured or supported in real environments or substantial labs.
Can you give example bullet points for a network engineer resume?
Yes. Strong network bullets name the technology, the scale and the improvement in uptime, speed, security or cost. Adapt these fictional examples:
- Example: "Designed and deployed a new campus network for a 1,500-user office, with 80 Cisco Catalyst switches and redundant core links."
- Example: "Migrated 25 branch sites from MPLS to Fortinet SD-WAN, keeping all sites online during cut-over weekends."
- Example: "Rebuilt firewall rule bases on Palo Alto firewalls, removing 600 unused rules and closing risky open ports."
- Example: "Reduced network-related help desk tickets by fixing Wi-Fi channel planning across three floors."
Use numbers such as sites, users, devices, links or tickets. They make your experience easy to judge.
How should I list CCNA, CCNP and other network certifications?
Put them in a Certifications section with the full name, vendor, year and expiry date, and mention the most relevant one in your summary. Network certifications are commonly listed in adverts, though they are not legally required.
Examples (fictional dates):
- "Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Enterprise, 2024, valid to 2027"
- "Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), 2022"
- "Fortinet NSE 4 – FortiOS, 2025"
- "Juniper JNCIA-Junos, 2023"
If a certification has lapsed, you can write "CCNP Enterprise (2019–2022, expired)" rather than presenting it as current. If you are studying, write "CCNP Security – in progress".
How do I write a junior network engineer resume?
Show your fundamentals through certifications, labs, internships and any help desk or NOC work. Junior network roles look for solid basics and good troubleshooting habits.
What to include:
- Summary. Example (fictional): "CCNA-certified IT graduate with a NOC internship, experienced with VLANs, OSPF labs in Cisco Packet Tracer and GNS3, and basic firewall rules."
- Labs or projects. Example: "Built a home lab with two routers, a layer 3 switch and a pfSense firewall to practise OSPF and site-to-site VPN."
- Related experience: help desk, cabling, NOC monitoring.
- Education and certifications.
Example bullet (fictional): "Monitored 300 network devices in a NOC and escalated incidents with clear notes to second-line engineers."
How do I show network uptime and reliability improvements?
Describe the problem, the design or configuration change and the outcome, using counts of incidents, outages or recovery time. Avoid vague claims such as "ensured high availability".
Fictional bullets:
- "Added redundant uplinks and HSRP at the core, reducing unplanned site outages from six a year to one."
- "Introduced configuration backups and change templates, cutting time to restore a failed switch from hours to 20 minutes."
- "Moved monitoring to SNMP and syslog alerts with clear thresholds, so issues were caught before users reported them."
You can describe availability targets in words, for example "met the agreed uptime target each quarter", instead of percentages.
What is the difference between a network engineer and network administrator resume?
A network administrator resume focuses on day-to-day operation, user support, changes and monitoring; a network engineer resume adds design, projects, upgrades and higher-level troubleshooting. Titles vary by employer, so describe your actual work.
Administrator emphasis:
- Example (fictional): "Managed switch port changes, VLAN assignments and Wi-Fi access for 600 users."
Engineer emphasis:
- Example (fictional): "Designed the routing for a new data centre, including BGP with two internet providers."
If you are moving from administrator to engineer, bring project and design work to the top.
What keywords do employers use in network engineer job adverts?
Common terms include routing and switching, LAN/WAN, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, SD-WAN, VPN, firewalls, Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet, Palo Alto, wireless, network security, troubleshooting, network monitoring, data centre, VXLAN, automation and CCNA or CCNP.
How to use them:
- Match the vendor names in the advert if you have used them.
- Use the advert's wording for technology, such as "SD-WAN" or "NGFW".
- Put key protocols and vendors in bullets as well as skills.
The job-description comparison in the builder shows which frequent advert terms already appear in your resume. Use it to spot gaps, and only add true experience.
How do I show network security and firewall work on my resume?
Name the firewall platforms, the policies or projects you handled and the security outcome. Network security is a common specialisation and a strong selling point.
Fictional bullets:
- "Managed Fortinet firewalls at 15 sites, handling rule changes through change control."
- "Implemented network segmentation for payment systems, separating them from the guest and office networks."
- "Rolled out 802.1X network access control on 1,200 wired ports with Cisco ISE."
- "Set up site-to-site IPsec VPNs with 10 partners and documented each tunnel."
Do not include real IP ranges, hostnames or rule details. Describe the work in general terms.
Should a network engineer show automation and scripting skills?
Yes. Network automation is increasingly expected, and even small scripts show you can work at scale. Name the tools and what you automated.
Fictional bullets:
- "Wrote Python scripts with Netmiko to back up configurations from 400 devices every night."
- "Used Ansible playbooks to push standard VLAN and SNMP settings to new switches, cutting setup time."
- "Built a NetBox inventory as the source of truth for IP addresses and device details."
If you are learning, a home lab project with automation is worth including. Example (fictional): "Automated OSPF lab builds in GNS3 with Ansible and Jinja2 templates."
How should a senior network engineer or network architect resume differ?
Show design ownership, standards, vendor and budget decisions, and mentoring, not only configuration. Senior roles are judged on how well the network serves the business.
Fictional bullets:
- "Designed the regional WAN architecture for 40 sites across the GCC, standardising on SD-WAN and dual internet links."
- "Wrote network design standards and templates used by all engineers and contractors."
- "Led vendor evaluation for a data centre switching refresh and presented the recommendation to IT leadership."
- "Mentored 4 junior engineers through their CCNP studies."
Keep a few hands-on troubleshooting bullets for credibility.
How do I show troubleshooting skills on a network engineer resume?
Give examples of difficult problems, your method and the fix. Troubleshooting is central to the job, and examples are more convincing than "strong troubleshooting skills".
Fictional bullets:
- "Traced intermittent call drops to an MTU mismatch on a VPN tunnel using packet captures in Wireshark."
- "Resolved a spanning tree loop that took down a floor of users, then added BPDU guard on access ports."
- "Acted as third-line escalation for the service desk, closing complex tickets within agreed times."
Keep each example short. You can tell the full story in an interview.
What mistakes should network engineers avoid on their resumes?
The most common mistake is listing every protocol and vendor without showing what you did with them. Other frequent problems:
- No scale: number of sites, users, devices or links.
- Including real IP addresses, device names or customer network details.
- Listing expired certifications as current.
- Mixing desktop support tasks with network work so the network role looks smaller.
- Claiming design work when you followed someone else's design.
Fix it by adding a one-line scope for each job. Example (fictional): "Enterprise network, 18 sites, 3,000 users, Cisco and Fortinet."
How do I move from IT support or help desk into network engineering?
Highlight every network task you already do, add a CCNA or similar certification, and show labs or projects. Many network engineers start in support or NOC roles.
Steps:
- Summary. Example (fictional): "IT support engineer with three years handling switch, Wi-Fi and VPN issues for 800 users, CCNA certified and seeking a network engineer role."
- Bullets that show network work: VLAN changes, cabling projects, firewall requests, Wi-Fi fixes.
- A home lab or project section.
- Certifications.
Example bullet (fictional): "Configured access ports and VLANs on 60 switches during an office move, under the network team's guidance."
How do I show cloud networking experience on my resume?
Name the cloud provider, the networking services and how they connected to on-premises networks. Cloud networking is in demand as companies move to hybrid setups.
Fictional bullets:
- "Designed AWS VPCs with transit gateways connecting 12 accounts and the on-premises data centre over Direct Connect."
- "Configured Azure virtual WAN and ExpressRoute for a hybrid network serving 5 offices."
- "Set up cloud firewalls and security groups following the company's segmentation standards."
List cloud networking certifications, such as AWS Advanced Networking, if you have them.
How should I describe wireless network projects?
Name the platform, the size, the survey and design work and the user outcome. Wireless projects are visible to users, so improvements are easy to describe.
Fictional bullets:
- "Planned and deployed 220 Aruba access points across a university campus after predictive and on-site surveys."
- "Fixed poor Wi-Fi coverage in a warehouse by redesigning AP placement for high racking."
- "Set up guest Wi-Fi with captive portal and bandwidth limits for a hotel of 300 rooms."
Mention survey tools such as Ekahau or AirMagnet and any wireless certification you hold.
What is a good section order for a network engineer resume?
Use contact details, summary, certifications, technical skills, experience, projects and education. Certifications are often checked early in network hiring, so placing them near the top helps.
Notes:
- Juniors can put labs and projects above experience.
- Senior engineers can move certifications below experience if their experience is strong.
- Keep education short when you have several years of experience.
A single-column layout with clear headings works well. You can reorder sections in the builder for each application.
How do I write a network engineer CV for jobs in the Gulf?
Show vendor skills, certifications and project scale clearly, and add optional details that regional employers often ask for, such as visa status, notice period and driving licence. Many Gulf roles involve multi-site and project work.
Tips:
- Name sectors such as oil and gas, banking, telecom, airports or government, described accurately.
- Mention system integrator or vendor partner experience if you worked for one.
- Include site work, such as data centre or field deployments, if the role needs travel.
Example bullet (fictional): "Deployed network infrastructure for 6 new retail mall sites in Riyadh and Jeddah, working with local contractors."
How do I describe working for a system integrator or managed service provider?
Show the number and type of clients, the services you delivered and how you met service levels. Integrator and MSP work shows variety and customer-facing skills.
Fictional bullets:
- "Delivered network projects for 15 clients in banking, education and retail, from design to handover."
- "Supported 40 managed customer networks within agreed service levels, handling incidents and changes."
- "Wrote handover documents and trained client IT teams after each deployment."
Avoid naming clients unless they are public references you are allowed to share. Describe them by sector and size instead.
How long should a network engineer resume be?
One page for juniors and up to two pages for experienced engineers is a common guide. Use the space for projects, scale and certifications.
To keep it focused:
- Group skills by area.
- Use three to five bullets per role.
- Summarise older support jobs in one line.
- Link to a lab or automation portfolio if you have one.
Example of a short older role line (fictional): "Earlier: IT Support Technician, 2014–2017, desktop and network support for a school district."
Should I include data centre experience separately on my resume?
Yes, if you have it, because data centre networking is a specialisation with its own technologies. Name the platforms, design and scale.
Fictional bullets:
- "Built a spine-leaf fabric with 4 spines and 24 leaves on Arista switches using VXLAN EVPN."
- "Migrated 300 servers from a legacy three-tier network to the new fabric with no unplanned downtime."
- "Set up out-of-band management and console servers for all data centre devices."
Mention related work with load balancers, storage networks or virtualisation teams if you did it.
How can a network engineer move into cybersecurity or cloud roles?
Highlight the security or cloud parts of your network work, add relevant certifications and show projects. Network engineers have strong foundations for both paths.
For cybersecurity:
- Bring forward firewalls, segmentation, VPN, NAC and incident support.
- Consider certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or vendor security tracks.
For cloud:
- Bring forward VPC design, hybrid connectivity and automation.
- Add a cloud certification and a lab project.
Example summary (fictional): "Network engineer with seven years in firewall and VPN operations, moving into a network security analyst role. Led segmentation of payment systems and supported security incident investigations."
How do I show change management and documentation on a network resume?
Give examples of planned changes, documentation you created and their effect on stability or audits. Disciplined change work is valued, especially in banks, hospitals and telecom.
Fictional bullets:
- "Prepared method statements and rollback plans for 120 network changes a year through the change advisory board."
- "Created up-to-date network diagrams and IP plans for 18 sites, used in a successful external audit."
- "Wrote standard operating procedures for switch replacement, used by night shift engineers."
These bullets show you can be trusted with production networks.
Should I list my home lab on a network engineer resume?
Yes, especially if you are junior or moving into a new area, such as SD-WAN, automation or cloud. A home lab shows initiative and real practice.
How to list it:
- In a Projects section with a short description and tools.
- Example (fictional): "Home lab: EVE-NG with virtual Cisco and Juniper routers to practise BGP, MPLS L3VPN and route maps for CCNP study."
- Example (fictional): "Automated lab builds with Ansible and published the templates on GitHub."
Keep it short for senior engineers, as real project work matters more. Make sure lab software licences are used legitimately.
How do I show service provider or telecom network experience?
Name the technologies, the customer base and the scale, as service provider networks differ from enterprise ones. Telecom employers look for MPLS, BGP and large-scale operations.
Fictional bullets:
- "Configured MPLS L3VPN services for 200 business customers on Juniper MX routers."
- "Managed BGP peering with 6 upstream providers and internet exchanges."
- "Supported fibre rollout for 30 new business parks, provisioning customer edge devices."
Mention operations tools and processes such as OSS/BSS systems, ticketing and NOC shift work if relevant.
