IT Support Specialist resume

This guide answers practical questions about writing an IT support or helpdesk resume. It covers summaries, the technical skills and certifications to list, example bullets with ticket volumes and service results, and how to describe first- and second-line work, onboarding, hardware, Microsoft 365, scripting, documentation and security tasks. It also helps beginners with no IT job yet, team leads, people moving towards system administration and those applying in the UAE and wider Gulf. Every sample line is a fictional example to adapt so it is true for you.

What should an IT support specialist put in a resume summary?

State your support level, the environment you support (users, devices, systems) and one service result, such as faster ticket resolution or higher user satisfaction. Keep it short and practical.

Example (fictional): "IT support specialist with four years of first- and second-line support for a 600-user office, covering Windows 11, Microsoft 365, Active Directory and networked printers. Kept most tickets within service targets and built a self-help knowledge base that reduced password-reset calls."

Another example (fictional), for a helpdesk starter: "CompTIA A+ certified helpdesk technician with retail and customer service experience, comfortable troubleshooting laptops, mobile devices and Wi-Fi issues for non-technical users."

Mention the ticketing tool if the job advert does, for example ServiceNow, Jira Service Management or Freshservice. Avoid generic lines such as "hardworking IT professional seeking a challenging role", which tell the reader nothing about the systems you know or the users you have helped. If you support users in more than one language, the summary is a good place to say so.

Which technical skills should an IT support resume list?

List the operating systems, platforms, hardware and tools you support day to day, grouped so a reader can check them quickly against the job advert.

Example skills section (fictional):

  • Operating systems: Windows 10/11, macOS, Ubuntu basics
  • Microsoft: Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Teams, Intune, Active Directory, Entra ID
  • Networking: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, Wi-Fi troubleshooting, basic switch configuration
  • Hardware: laptop and desktop builds, printers, imaging, peripherals
  • Tools: ServiceNow, remote desktop tools, PowerShell basics
  • Practices: ITIL incident and request handling, asset management, documentation

Lead with the platforms the employer uses. If the advert mentions Google Workspace or Jamf, and you have used them, move those up.

Can you give examples of IT support bullet points with results?

Yes. Good IT support bullets name the problem area, the tool and the result for users or the business, such as less downtime, faster fixes or fewer repeat tickets.

Examples (fictional, change the details to your own):

  • "Resolved an average of 25 tickets a day across hardware, software and access requests in ServiceNow, staying within service targets."
  • "Imaged and deployed 150 laptops with Intune Autopilot during an office move, with users working on day one."
  • "Wrote 40 knowledge base articles for common issues, reducing repeat password and VPN calls."
  • "Set up a printer monitoring routine that caught toner and paper faults before staff reported them."

If you have no exact numbers, describe scale: number of users, sites or devices you supported.

How do I show the difference between first-line and second-line support experience?

Name the support level in your job entry or first bullet, then show the kind of issues you handled. Employers often hire specifically for first-line (service desk) or second-line (deskside or technical) roles.

First-line examples (fictional):

  • "Logged and triaged calls and emails from 400 users, resolving password, Outlook and Teams issues on first contact where possible."

Second-line examples (fictional):

  • "Took escalations from the service desk for Active Directory, group policy and Intune enrolment problems."
  • "Replaced laptop parts and rebuilt failed devices on site."

If you moved up during a job, show it with a separate title line or a bullet such as "Promoted to second-line support after 12 months." This shows progression clearly.

Which IT certifications are worth putting on a support resume?

Entry and support certifications are often valued in IT support hiring because they show a baseline of knowledge. List them with issuer and year in a Certifications section.

Certifications support staff commonly list (examples):

  • CompTIA A+, Network+ or Security+
  • Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator or Endpoint Administrator Associate
  • ITIL 4 Foundation
  • Cisco CCNA, for network-focused support
  • Google IT Support Professional Certificate

Example (fictional): "CompTIA A+ (Core 1 and Core 2), 2024."

If you are studying for one, you can write "Microsoft Endpoint Administrator Associate, in progress (exam planned)". Do not list an exam you have not passed as complete.

How do I write an IT support resume with no IT job experience?

Lead with a certification or training, a home lab or project section, and transferable customer service experience. Entry-level support managers look for basic technical knowledge plus patience with users.

Ideas:

  • Home lab: set up a Windows Server domain, a small network, or Microsoft 365 test tenant and document it.
  • Volunteer: helping a school, charity or family business with computers.
  • Transferable work: retail, call centre or hospitality roles show calm customer handling.

Example lines (fictional):

  • "Built a home lab with Windows Server, Active Directory and two client PCs to practise user and group policy management."
  • "Handled 60 customer queries a day at a mobile phone shop, including device set-up and data transfer."

Put certifications and the lab near the top.

How do I show customer service skills in an IT support resume?

Show them through outcomes such as satisfaction scores, calm handling of urgent issues and clear communication with non-technical staff. In IT support, how you help people matters almost as much as what you fix.

Ways to show it:

  • User feedback or satisfaction survey results, if your team tracked them.
  • Supporting senior executives or busy front-line staff.
  • Training users or writing simple guides.
  • Handling difficult or urgent calls well.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Provided VIP support to the executive team, including meeting room and video call set-up before board meetings."
  • "Ran short Teams training sessions for new starters, reducing basic how-to tickets in their first month."

Avoid listing "good communication" alone; let examples prove it.

What keywords should be on an IT helpdesk resume?

Use the system names, support tasks and service terms that appear in the job advert, where they are true for you. Helpdesk adverts often search for specific platforms.

Common IT support keywords:

  • Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Intune, Exchange, Azure AD or Entra ID
  • Windows, macOS, mobile device management
  • Ticketing: ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, Zendesk, Freshservice
  • Incident management, service requests, SLA, ITIL
  • Troubleshooting, imaging, onboarding and offboarding, asset management
  • Networking: DNS, DHCP, VPN, LAN, Wi-Fi

Put them inside real bullets, such as "Handled onboarding and offboarding in Active Directory and Microsoft 365 for 20 starters a month." The ATS check in the builder can compare your resume with the advert and show which frequent terms are missing.

What are common mistakes on IT support resumes?

The most common mistake is a duty list that could describe any helpdesk: "answered calls, fixed computers, reset passwords". It shows you did the job but not how well or at what scale.

Other mistakes:

  • Listing every Windows version since the early 2000s.
  • Skipping the ticketing tool and support level.
  • No numbers at all: users, devices, sites or tickets.
  • Writing "expert" for areas you only touched, such as networking.
  • Forgetting certifications or putting expired ones without dates.
  • Unclear job titles: "Technician" without saying IT or which environment.

Example fix (fictional): change "Fixed computer problems" to "Diagnosed and repaired laptop, docking and display faults for 300 users across two sites."

How do I describe onboarding and offboarding duties on my resume?

Describe the volume, the systems and the security or speed results. Joiner and leaver processes show you can handle access, devices and accounts reliably.

Include:

  • Accounts created and removed in Active Directory, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.
  • Device preparation and collection.
  • Access to shared drives, applications and security groups.
  • Checklists or automation you introduced.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Managed IT onboarding for around 15 new starters a month, with laptop, accounts and access ready on day one."
  • "Wrote a PowerShell script to disable leaver accounts and remove licences, closing a gap where accounts stayed active after exit."

This is also a good place to show security awareness without overstating it.

How can an IT support specialist move into system administration on a resume?

Highlight the server, cloud and scripting work you already do, add relevant certifications or lab work, and use a headline that names the target role. Many sysadmins start in support.

Steps:

  • Pull out bullets on Active Directory, group policy, Intune, backups, patching and server tasks.
  • Show automation: PowerShell or Bash scripts.
  • Add a lab or project on Windows Server, Linux or Azure.
  • Consider a certification such as Microsoft Azure Administrator, CompTIA Linux+ or Server+.

Example bullet (fictional): "Took over monthly Windows Server patching for eight servers, with a rollback plan and after-hours testing."

Keep your real title, such as "IT Support Specialist", and let the bullets show system administration work.

How should an IT support team lead or IT manager present their experience?

Show service performance, team leadership and improvements to the support function. A lead is judged on how well the whole desk runs.

Highlight:

  • Team size and shifts managed.
  • Service levels, backlog and satisfaction trends.
  • Process improvements, such as a new knowledge base, triage rules or self-service portal.
  • Vendor and budget responsibility, if any.
  • Projects such as office moves or device refreshes.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Led a team of six support analysts covering two shifts; cleared a 300-ticket backlog in six weeks."
  • "Introduced a self-service password reset portal, reducing password tickets significantly."

Keep a short technical skills line so readers know your hands-on background.

Should I include my home lab on an IT support resume?

Yes, if you are entry level or moving into a new area, and describe it like a project with clear tasks. A lab shows initiative and real hands-on practice.

How to present it:

  • Section heading: "Projects" or "Home Lab".
  • Name the technologies and what you configured.
  • Mention documentation, which support teams value.

Example (fictional): "Home lab: configured Windows Server 2022 with Active Directory, DNS and DHCP; joined two Windows 11 clients; practised group policy and file share permissions; documented steps in a personal wiki."

Once you have a year or two of relevant work, shorten it to one line or remove it, unless it shows skills your job does not, such as Linux or cloud.

How do I describe hardware repair and device deployment work?

Give the type and number of devices, the tools or process you used and the result for users. Hardware work is concrete, so it is easy to show clearly.

Examples (fictional):

  • "Repaired and upgraded about 20 laptops a week, replacing screens, keyboards, batteries and SSDs."
  • "Rolled out 200 new desktops across four floors over two weekends, including data transfer and printer mapping."
  • "Managed imaging with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, later moving the team to Intune Autopilot."

Mention any vendor training or warranty processes, such as working with Dell or HP support for parts. If you kept an asset register, say which tool you used, because asset tracking is a common requirement.

What section order works best for an IT support resume?

For most IT support candidates: contact details, summary, technical skills, certifications, experience, education. Certifications sit higher than usual because many support managers check them early.

Variations:

  • Entry level: put certifications and a home lab or projects above experience.
  • Experienced: experience can come before certifications if your work history is strong.
  • Add a Languages section if you support users in more than one language.

Example headings (fictional): "Technical Skills", "Certifications", "IT Experience", "Other Experience", "Education".

Separating "IT Experience" from "Other Experience" works well for career changers, as long as the dates still make sense together.

How do I show scripting or automation skills as an IT support specialist?

Name the scripting language and describe one or two tasks you automated, with the time saved or errors removed. Automation is one of the clearest signs that you are ready for more senior support roles.

Examples (fictional):

  • "Wrote a PowerShell script to bulk-create user accounts from HR spreadsheets, removing manual data entry for new starter batches."
  • "Created a batch script that cleared print queues and restarted the spooler, used by first-line staff for common printer faults."
  • "Automated weekly disk space reports for 12 servers using PowerShell and scheduled tasks."

Add the language to your skills line: "PowerShell (intermediate), Bash (basic)". Be honest about level; interviewers often ask you to explain a script.

Should I mention service level agreements and ticket numbers on my resume?

Yes, briefly, because they show you worked to targets and at a known volume. Use your team's real measures and keep the wording simple.

Useful measures:

  • Tickets handled per day or week.
  • First-contact resolution.
  • Time to respond or resolve compared with targets.
  • User satisfaction ratings.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Handled 120 tickets a week in Jira Service Management, meeting response targets for priority 1 and 2 incidents."
  • "Kept first-contact resolution high by building a quick-fix checklist for the five most common issues."

If you do not know exact figures, use an estimate with "about" or describe the volume instead. Do not invent satisfaction scores.

How do I present IT support work in a school, hospital or hotel?

Name the setting and the systems specific to it, because sector experience can be a strong advantage. Each setting has its own users, priorities and tools.

Examples (fictional):

  • School: "Supported 80 teachers and 900 students with classroom displays, Chromebooks and Google Workspace for Education."
  • Hospital: "Supported clinical workstations and printers on wards, working to tight response times and following the hospital's access and privacy procedures."
  • Hotel: "Supported property management system terminals, guest Wi-Fi and point-of-sale devices across a 300-room hotel."

Mention out-of-hours or shift work if relevant. For healthcare settings, describe your IT tasks only and avoid any clinical claims.

IT Support Specialist resume builder

How can I show basic networking skills without overclaiming?

Describe the specific networking tasks you have done, rather than writing "networking expert". Most support roles want practical troubleshooting, not network engineering.

Typical support-level networking tasks:

  • Diagnosing connection problems with ping, ipconfig, tracert and nslookup.
  • Patching cables and labelling ports.
  • Resetting switch ports or configuring VLANs under guidance.
  • Setting up Wi-Fi access points and VPN clients.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Traced and fixed recurring Wi-Fi drop-outs in the training rooms by moving two access points and changing channels."
  • "Patched and labelled 96 network ports during a floor refit."

If you hold CompTIA Network+ or CCNA, list it, but still show the hands-on tasks.

How do I list remote support and Microsoft 365 administration?

Name the admin centres and tools you use, the tasks you perform and the number of users. Remote and cloud support is now a large part of most support roles.

Include:

  • Microsoft 365 admin centre, Exchange admin, Teams admin, Intune.
  • Licence management, mailbox permissions, shared mailboxes, distribution lists.
  • Remote tools, such as Quick Assist or other remote desktop software.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Administered Microsoft 365 for 350 users, handling licences, shared mailboxes and Teams policies."
  • "Provided remote support for 120 hybrid workers, resolving VPN and Teams audio issues without site visits."

If your access was limited, describe it accurately, for example "user-level administration under the senior administrator".

What should an IT support resume look like for jobs in the UAE or GCC?

Keep the technical content the same as anywhere else, and add the details Gulf employers often ask for, such as location, notice period and visa status where relevant. Many support roles in the region also value multilingual support.

Useful additions:

  • Current city and country.
  • Notice period and availability for shifts.
  • Driving licence if the role includes travel between sites.
  • Languages: English, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog or others you use with users.

Example summary (fictional): "IT support technician based in Abu Dhabi with three years supporting a multi-site retail group; English and Arabic speaker; available immediately."

Put personal details in the contact area and keep the rest focused on systems, users and results.

How do I show security awareness in an IT support role without claiming to be a security analyst?

Describe the everyday security tasks you handled, such as access control, patching, phishing reports and device encryption. These are real and valued, and they do not require a security title.

Examples (fictional):

  • "Processed phishing reports from staff, removed malicious emails across mailboxes and fed patterns to the security team."
  • "Enforced BitLocker encryption and PIN policies on laptops through Intune."
  • "Removed access promptly for leavers and reviewed shared folder permissions quarterly."

Add CompTIA Security+ if you hold it. If you want to move into security, say so in your headline, but keep the job title you actually held.

How do I describe documentation and knowledge base work?

Say how many articles or guides you wrote, who used them and what changed as a result. Documentation saves time for both users and colleagues, and employers notice it.

Examples (fictional):

  • "Wrote and maintained 50 knowledge base articles in Confluence, used by first-line staff for common fixes."
  • "Created illustrated how-to guides for the new VPN, cutting setup calls during the remote working roll-out."
  • "Documented the network layout and server inventory so new team members could get up to speed faster."

Name the tool, such as Confluence, SharePoint or the ticketing system's knowledge base. Clear documentation is also a good talking point in interviews.

My IT support job included lots of non-IT tasks. Should I mention them?

Mention them only if they are relevant to the job you want, and keep them short. Many small-company IT staff also handle phones, CCTV, purchasing or office admin, and some of it can help your case.

Useful non-IT tasks to keep:

  • Purchasing and vendor management for IT equipment.
  • CCTV, access control or phone system support.
  • Budget tracking for IT spend.

Tasks to drop or shorten:

  • General office errands and reception cover, unless applying for a mixed role.

Example bullet (fictional): "Managed IT purchasing and supplier quotes for laptops and licences, keeping the asset register up to date."

Place the IT-focused bullets first so the role still reads as IT support.

How do I explain shift work or 24/7 support on an IT support resume?

State the coverage pattern briefly and connect it to responsibility, such as handling incidents alone overnight. Shift support shows reliability and the ability to act without immediate supervision.

How to write it:

  • Add it to the job line or first bullet: "Rotating shifts on a 24/7 service desk."
  • Show what you handled alone: escalations, major incidents, monitoring alerts.
  • Mention handovers and logs.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Covered night shifts on a 24/7 service desk for an airline, monitoring check-in systems and escalating outages to on-call engineers."
  • "Wrote clear handover notes each shift, so day staff could pick up open incidents quickly."

If you are looking for day roles only, you do not need to explain that on the resume.
