Software Engineer resume

This guide answers the questions people ask most often when writing a software engineer resume. It covers how to write a summary that names your stack, which technical skills to list and how to group them, example bullet points with measurable results, and how to show scale, reliability and design work. You will also find advice for graduates, senior and staff engineers, specialists in mobile, embedded or machine learning, and people moving into or out of software engineering. All sample lines are fictional examples to adapt so they are true for you.

What should a software engineer resume summary say?

A software engineer summary should state your level, your main language or stack, the kind of systems you build and one result that shows impact. Keep it to two or three sentences and match it to the job you are applying for.

A useful structure:

  • Level and focus: "Backend software engineer with five years in Java and Spring Boot."
  • What you build: payment services, mobile apps, data pipelines, internal tools.
  • One outcome: faster releases, fewer incidents, lower latency.

Example (fictional): "Backend software engineer with five years building Java and Spring Boot microservices for e-commerce. Designed an order service handling peak holiday traffic and cut average API response time from 800 ms to 250 ms. Comfortable with AWS, Docker and CI/CD pipelines."

Avoid vague openers such as "passionate coder who loves technology". A hiring manager wants to know quickly which stack you know and what problems you have solved with it.

Which technical skills should I list on a software engineer resume, and how do I group them?

List the languages, frameworks, tools and platforms you have actually used in work or serious projects, grouped into a few labelled lines. Grouping helps both a human reader and an applicant tracking system find the terms quickly.

A common grouping:

  • Languages: Python, Java, TypeScript, Go
  • Frameworks: Spring Boot, Django, React
  • Data: PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka
  • Cloud and DevOps: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions
  • Practices: unit testing, code review, REST API design, Agile

Put the stack that matches the job description first in each line. Leave out tools you touched once in a tutorial, because interviewers often ask you to talk about anything on the page. If you rate your skills, use plain words such as "proficient" and "familiar" rather than star bars, which software cannot read.

Can you give example bullet points for a mid-level software engineer?

Yes. Strong software engineer bullets start with an action verb, name the technology and end with a result such as speed, reliability, cost or user impact.

Examples (fictional, adapt to your own work):

  • "Rebuilt the checkout API in Go, reducing p95 latency from 1.2 s to 300 ms during sale events."
  • "Introduced automated integration tests in GitHub Actions, cutting release rollbacks from monthly to once a quarter."
  • "Migrated three legacy cron jobs to AWS Lambda, removing two always-on servers."
  • "Mentored two junior developers through code reviews and pair programming on the payments team."

If you do not have exact numbers, describe scale instead: number of users, requests per day, services owned or teams supported. Avoid bullets that only list duties, such as "Responsible for writing code", because every developer could write that line.

How do I show measurable results when my code work is hard to quantify?

Measure what your code changed for users, the team or the system, even when you have no revenue figure. Most engineering work affects at least one of these: speed, reliability, cost, delivery time or developer effort.

Ideas for numbers you may already know:

  • Latency or page load time before and after.
  • Build time, deployment frequency or test coverage.
  • Incidents, bugs or support tickets per month.
  • Number of services, endpoints, users or requests handled.
  • Hours of manual work removed by automation.

Example (fictional): "Automated database backup verification with a Python script, saving the operations team about four hours a week."

If a number is an estimate, say "about" or "roughly", and be ready to explain how you worked it out. Never invent figures; interviewers often ask follow-up questions about them.

How should a fresh computer science graduate write a software engineer resume?

Lead with education and projects, because these are your strongest evidence. Put your degree near the top, then two to four projects that show real engineering, then internships, then a grouped skills section.

For each project, include:

  • What it does and who used it.
  • The stack, for example React, Node.js and MongoDB.
  • What you personally built and one result.
  • A link to the repository if the code is clean and has a README.

Example (fictional): "Built a campus room-booking web app with Django and PostgreSQL, used by around 300 students in the final semester; wrote unit tests for the booking logic."

Mention hackathons, open-source contributions, teaching assistant roles and relevant coursework such as data structures or operating systems only if they add something. Keep it to one page.

What changes on a senior or staff software engineer resume?

A senior or staff resume shifts from what you coded to what you designed, decided and improved across teams. Individual tasks matter less; scope, technical direction and influence matter more.

Show:

  • System design ownership: architecture choices and the trade-offs behind them.
  • Cross-team impact: platforms or libraries other teams adopted.
  • Reliability and scale: on-call leadership, incident reduction, capacity planning.
  • People impact: mentoring, hiring panels, writing engineering standards.

Example (fictional): "Led the design of an event-driven order platform on Kafka adopted by four product teams, replacing nightly batch jobs with near real-time updates."

Keep the last eight to ten years in detail and summarise older roles in one line each. Two pages is normal at this level.

Should I put GitHub and personal projects on my software engineer resume?

Yes, add your GitHub or portfolio link if it shows work you are proud of, and list one or two projects in their own section when they show skills your job history does not. Recruiters and engineers often click the link, so check what they will see first.

Before adding the link:

  • Pin your best repositories and add a clear README to each.
  • Remove or make private any half-finished forks and copied tutorial code.
  • Make sure the commit history is yours and the code runs.

Example (fictional) project line: "Open-source CLI tool in Rust for log parsing; 40 GitHub stars and two outside contributors."

If your best code is private company work, do not share it. Describe it in your experience bullets instead.

Do certifications like AWS or Kubernetes help a software engineer resume?

They can help, especially for cloud, DevOps and platform roles, but they support experience rather than replace it. List them in a Certifications section with the issuer and year.

Examples of certifications engineers commonly list:

  • AWS Certified Developer or Solutions Architect
  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)
  • Microsoft Azure Developer Associate
  • Google Cloud Professional Cloud Developer

Example (fictional): "AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, Amazon Web Services, 2025."

Back each certification with a bullet that shows you used the skill, for example deploying services to EKS. Few general software roles require certifications, so do not delay applications to collect them. If one has expired, either renew it or leave it off.

What keywords do employers look for on a software engineer resume?

The best keywords are the exact languages, frameworks, practices and platforms named in the job advert you are answering. Read the advert and note the hard skills it repeats, then use the same terms where they are true for you.

Typical software engineering keywords include:

  • Languages and frameworks: Java, Python, C#, .NET, React, Node.js
  • Practices: microservices, REST APIs, test-driven development, CI/CD, code review
  • Platforms: AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, Kubernetes
  • Data: SQL, NoSQL, caching, message queues

Use both the short and full form once where it helps, such as "CI/CD (continuous integration and delivery)". Put keywords inside real bullets, not only in a skills list. The job-description comparison in the builder shows which frequent terms from the advert already appear in your resume.

What mistakes do software engineers make most often on their resumes?

The most common mistake is a wall of technologies with no evidence of what was built or achieved. Other frequent problems are easy to fix.

Watch out for:

  • Listing twenty languages at "expert" level. Pick the ones you can discuss in depth.
  • Bullets that describe the team's product, not your contribution. Use "I built" thinking, even if you write without "I".
  • Internal code names nobody outside the company understands. Say "internal billing service" instead.
  • No links, or links to empty GitHub profiles.
  • Logos of technologies or skill bars, which software may not read.
  • Outdated tools at the top, such as old frameworks you have not used for years.

Example fix (fictional): change "Worked on Project Falcon" to "Built the notification service for a fleet-tracking app used by 200 delivery drivers."

How do I describe frontend, backend or full-stack specialisation clearly?

Put the specialisation in your professional title and summary, then make sure most bullets support it. A reader should know within seconds whether you build interfaces, services or both.

Tips:

  • Title: "Full-Stack Software Engineer (React, Node.js)" is clearer than "Software Engineer".
  • Order skills by specialisation: backend engineers lead with languages, databases and APIs; frontend engineers lead with JavaScript frameworks, accessibility and performance.
  • Balance the bullets for full-stack roles so both sides appear.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • Backend: "Designed REST endpoints and PostgreSQL schemas for a subscription billing service."
  • Frontend: "Rebuilt the dashboard in React with lazy loading, cutting first page load from 4 s to 1.5 s."

If you apply to both kinds of role, keep two versions of the resume rather than one vague one.

What section order works best for an experienced software engineer?

For most experienced engineers, use this order: contact details, summary, technical skills, work experience, projects (optional), education, certifications. Experience is your strongest evidence, so it should start on the first half of page one.

Adjustments:

  • Put skills after experience if your skills list is long and pushes experience down.
  • Add a Projects section only for open-source or side projects that show something extra.
  • Education can be one line for each degree once you have several years of experience.
  • Publications or patents go near the end, unless you are applying for research engineering roles.

A single-column template keeps this order easy for applicant tracking systems to read. Use clear headings such as "Work Experience" rather than creative ones like "My Journey".

How can a QA tester or support engineer move into a software engineer role?

Show the coding you already do in your current job, then add projects that prove you can build features, not only test or support them. Many testers and support engineers already write scripts and automation, which is real engineering work.

Steps:

  • Use a target title in your summary, such as "QA engineer moving into backend development".
  • Rewrite bullets to highlight code: test frameworks you built, scripts, bug fixes you submitted.
  • Add one or two personal or open-source projects with a clear stack.
  • Group skills so programming languages come first.

Example (fictional): "Wrote a Python and Selenium regression suite of 400 tests and contributed 12 bug-fix pull requests to the product codebase."

Do not change your past job titles. Describe what you actually did under the real title.

How do I write a resume when moving from software engineer to engineering manager?

Keep your technical credibility visible but lead with people and delivery results. A hiring panel for an engineering manager wants to see that you have already grown people, run delivery and made trade-offs between features and technical debt.

Highlight:

  • Tech lead or acting manager periods, with team size.
  • Hiring, onboarding and mentoring.
  • Delivery improvements, such as predictable sprints or fewer missed releases.
  • Process you introduced: incident reviews, design reviews, on-call rotas.

Example (fictional): "As tech lead for a team of six, introduced fortnightly planning and design reviews; on-time delivery of committed sprint work rose from roughly half to most sprints."

Keep a short technical skills line so readers know your background, but you no longer need every library you have used.

Should I mention the size of the systems I worked on, like users or traffic?

Yes, scale is one of the clearest ways to show the level of your engineering work. A service used by fifty people and one used by a million users need different skills, and readers want to know which you have handled.

Useful scale indicators:

  • Users or customers served.
  • Requests per second or per day.
  • Data volume, such as records or terabytes processed.
  • Number of microservices, repositories or engineers on the codebase.

Example (fictional): "Maintained a Node.js notification service sending about two million push messages a day across three regions."

Check that the figures are not confidential. If your employer does not publish them, use a rounded or relative description, such as "millions of daily events" or "the company's highest-traffic service".

How do I list programming languages I know only a little?

Separate them from your main languages with a simple label, such as "Familiar with", or leave them out. Interviewers may ask about any language on the page, so honesty here protects you.

Example layout (fictional):

  • Proficient: Python, SQL, TypeScript
  • Familiar: Go, Rust

Do not list a language you used only in one university assignment years ago unless the job asks for it and you can refresh it quickly. If a job advert names a language you know a little, mention where you used it, such as "Wrote a small Go service for internal health checks", rather than claiming deep skill.

Avoid percentages or star ratings for skill levels. They mean different things to different readers and are hard for software to parse.

How do embedded or mobile software engineers adjust their resumes?

Name the platform, hardware or app store context early, because embedded and mobile roles look for very specific environments. A general "software engineer" title can hide the specialisation hiring teams want.

For embedded engineers, mention:

  • Languages such as C and C++, RTOS, microcontroller families, protocols like CAN, SPI or I2C.
  • Debugging tools such as oscilloscopes and JTAG.
  • Example (fictional): "Wrote firmware in C for an STM32-based sensor board, reducing power draw so batteries lasted twice as long."

For mobile engineers, mention:

  • Swift, Kotlin, Flutter or React Native, plus app store releases.
  • Crash rates, ratings or install numbers you can share.
  • Example (fictional): "Shipped 14 releases of a Kotlin banking app with offline mode and biometric login."

Put the platform in your title, for example "Embedded Software Engineer".

How do I show I can work in an Agile team without just writing "Agile"?

Describe the practices you took part in and what they improved. "Agile" alone is a keyword; specific practices are evidence.

Show things like:

  • Sprint planning, estimation and retrospectives you contributed to.
  • Code review habits and pair programming.
  • Working with product managers or designers on user stories.
  • Releasing small changes often through CI/CD.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Broke a six-month migration into fortnightly deliverables, so users saw improvements from the second sprint."
  • "Ran retrospectives for the platform team and introduced a definition of done that reduced re-opened tickets."

Keep "Agile" or "Scrum" in your skills line as well, because job adverts often use those exact words.

Software Engineer resume builder

How should I describe on-call and production support duties?

Describe on-call work through what you protected or improved, not just the rota you were on. Reliability skills are valued, especially for backend and platform roles.

Include:

  • The systems you supported and their importance.
  • How you handled incidents and what you changed afterwards.
  • Monitoring and alerting tools, such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog or PagerDuty.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Took part in a weekly on-call rota for payment services; led root-cause reviews for five major incidents."
  • "Added alerting on queue lag, so issues were caught before customers noticed."

Avoid making it sound like constant firefighting. Emphasise prevention and learning, which shows maturity.

I worked at a small startup as the only developer. How do I present that?

Present it as broad ownership, because being the only developer usually means you designed, built, deployed and supported the whole product. Make the scope clear without inflating your title.

Tips:

  • Keep your real title, such as "Software Developer", and explain the context in one line: "Sole developer at a 10-person logistics startup."
  • Group bullets by area: product features, infrastructure, data, support.
  • Show decisions you made and why.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Built the customer web app in Vue and Laravel from scratch and launched it in four months."
  • "Set up hosting on DigitalOcean with automated backups and deployment scripts."

Readers may wonder about code review and testing, so mention any practices you used to keep quality high on your own.

Software Engineer resume builder

Can I list internal tools and confidential projects on my software engineer resume?

Yes, but describe them in general terms and leave out anything confidential, such as client names, unreleased products, security details or exact internal figures. You can still show the skill and the result.

How to do it:

  • Replace the code name with a description: "internal fraud-scoring service".
  • Round or generalise numbers: "several million transactions a month".
  • Leave out architecture details that could expose security weaknesses.

Example (fictional): "Built an internal deployment dashboard used by 30 engineers to track releases across 12 services."

If you are unsure, check your employment contract or ask your manager what can be shared. In interviews you can say that some details are confidential.

What should a software engineer resume look like for jobs in the UAE or Gulf?

Use the same strong technical content as anywhere else, and add the personal details Gulf employers often ask for. A clear, single-column layout in English works well for most technology employers in the region.

Many applicants in the UAE and GCC include:

  • Current location and whether they are already in the country.
  • Notice period.
  • Visa or work authorisation status, if the employer asks.
  • Nationality, if they choose to share it.

Example summary (fictional): "Full-stack engineer based in Dubai with six years building React and .NET applications for fintech; available on one month's notice."

Keep these details in the contact area, not in the summary at length. Technical content still matters most: stack, scale and results.

I have been a software engineer for 15 years. Should I list old technologies?

Only list older technologies if the job uses them or they help explain your depth. Old tools at the top of your skills section can make a resume look out of date, even when your recent work is modern.

Practical approach:

  • Detail the last ten years or so of roles.
  • Summarise earlier roles in a short "Earlier experience" line.
  • Mention legacy skills when they are relevant, for example COBOL or mainframe work for banks modernising old systems.

Example (fictional): "Earlier roles: Software Developer at Northline Systems and Delta Soft (2009–2014), building C# desktop applications."

Make sure your recent bullets show current practices, such as cloud deployment, automated testing and containerisation, if you have used them.

How do I explain a contract or freelance software engineering history?

Group short contracts under one heading so the resume does not look like frequent job changes. Use your own business name or "Freelance Software Engineer" as the employer line, then list notable clients or projects underneath.

Example layout (fictional):
"Freelance Software Engineer, 2021–2025

  • Built a booking API in Python and FastAPI for a travel agency client.
  • Migrated a retail client's site from PHP to a headless setup with Next.js.
  • Delivered a data export tool for a logistics firm, saving staff a day of manual work each month."

Name clients only if you have permission. Otherwise describe them by sector and size. Mention repeat clients and long contracts, because they show reliability.

Software Engineer resume builder

What should a machine learning or AI-focused software engineer highlight?

Highlight the full path from data to a working model in production, not only model accuracy. Employers hiring ML engineers want people who can ship and maintain models, not just train them in notebooks.

Show:

  • Frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow or scikit-learn.
  • Data pipelines and feature work.
  • Deployment: model serving, monitoring and retraining.
  • Business or user results.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Deployed a product recommendation model with FastAPI and Docker, serving about 50 requests a second."
  • "Built a retraining pipeline in Airflow that refreshed the model weekly and tracked drift."

List any publications or competition results in a separate section, and avoid stacking buzzwords without evidence.
