Doctor / Physician resume

This guide answers common questions doctors ask about writing a physician CV or resume. It covers when to use a full medical CV, how to list licences and registrations as your regulator issues them, and how to present clinical posts, procedures, audits, research, teaching and leadership. It also helps interns, consultants, GPs, surgeons, international doctors explaining grades or exam periods, applicants in the UAE and Gulf, and physicians moving into non-clinical roles. It covers CV presentation only, not clinical or licensing advice. All sample lines are fictional.

Should a doctor use a resume or a full medical CV?

Most physician applications use a full medical CV rather than a short resume, because employers and training bodies want to see your complete training, licences, clinical posts, research and teaching. Some private clinics, recruiters or non-clinical employers prefer a shorter version, so follow the advert's instructions.

A full medical CV usually includes:

  • Personal and contact details.
  • Medical licence and registration details, as issued by your regulator.
  • Education and postgraduate qualifications.
  • Clinical posts and training rotations with dates.
  • Procedures or skills, where relevant to the role.
  • Research, publications, audits and presentations.
  • Teaching, leadership and memberships.

A short resume of one or two pages works for non-clinical roles, such as healthcare consulting or pharmaceutical industry jobs. Many doctors keep both versions and adapt them for each application.

Example (fictional) heading: "Dr Amina Yusuf, MBBS, MRCP – Internal Medicine Specialist".

How do I write a professional summary for a physician CV?

State your specialty, grade or level, years of practice, main clinical settings and one or two strengths, such as a subspecialty interest, teaching or service development. Keep it factual and brief.

Example (fictional): "Consultant internal medicine physician with 12 years of post-qualification experience, including eight years in acute medicine in tertiary hospitals. Special interest in diabetes and endocrinology, clinical lead for a diabetes outpatient service and regular teacher of junior doctors."

Another example (fictional), for a junior doctor: "Foundation-level doctor with rotations in general surgery, emergency medicine and paediatrics, seeking a core training post in internal medicine."

Avoid claims about clinical outcomes you cannot support. Use clear titles your target country will understand, and follow its naming conventions for grades.

How should I list medical licences and registrations on my CV?

Give licences and registrations their own section near the top, listing each one exactly as issued: the licence or registration type, issuing body, number if you choose to include it, and validity dates. Licensing rules differ by country and region, so check the official regulator's requirements for where you want to work.

Example layout (fictional):
"Licences and Registration

  • Full registration with licence to practise, [Medical regulator name], no. [number], valid until [date]
  • Specialist registration in Internal Medicine, [Regulator], [year]
  • Licensing application submitted to [health authority], [month year] (in progress)"

Never describe an application or eligibility assessment as a full licence. If you passed licensing exams but do not yet hold the licence, list the exams separately with the year.

How do I describe clinical posts and rotations on a physician CV?

List each post with the job title or grade, specialty, hospital, country and dates, then two to four bullets on the clinical scope, responsibilities and any notable achievements. Rotations within a training programme can sit under one heading.

Example entry (fictional):
"Specialty Registrar, Cardiology – Westbridge University Hospital, 2021–2024

  • Managed acute cardiology admissions and inpatient referrals across a 40-bed cardiology unit.
  • Performed and reported transthoracic echocardiograms under consultant supervision.
  • Ran a weekly heart failure clinic with the specialist nurse team.
  • Led an audit of discharge medication reconciliation, presented at the department meeting."

Use full specialty names and avoid hospital-specific abbreviations. Describe your role, not individual patient cases. For each post, readers usually want to know the size and type of the hospital, your level of responsibility, on-call duties and any supervision of junior colleagues. If you held several short rotations within one training scheme, group them under the scheme name with one line per rotation, so the history stays easy to follow.

Should I list procedures and clinical skills on my doctor CV?

Yes, if they are relevant to the post and you can perform them at the level stated. Many specialties, such as emergency medicine, anaesthesia, surgery and cardiology, look closely at procedural experience.

How to present them:

  • Group by area, for example airway, vascular access, imaging or endoscopy.
  • State the level: performed independently, performed under supervision or assisted.
  • Mention a logbook if you keep one: "Logbook available on request."

Example (fictional):
"Procedural skills

  • Central venous line insertion – independent
  • Ultrasound-guided pleural aspiration – supervised
  • Lumbar puncture – independent"

Do not list numbers you cannot verify from a logbook, and follow your training body's way of describing competence.

How do I present research and publications on a medical CV?

Use a separate Publications section with full references in a consistent citation style, and list research projects, posters and presentations under their own headings. Put the most recent first.

Example layout (fictional):
"Publications

  • Yusuf A, Khan R, Lee T. Early mobilisation after hip fracture surgery: a retrospective cohort. Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics. 2024;12(3):45–51.

Presentations

  • Poster: 'Improving sepsis screening on medical wards', Regional Medicine Conference, 2023."

Mark your own name in bold only if your format allows formatting; otherwise list as normal. Separate peer-reviewed articles from abstracts and letters. Include work under review only if clearly marked "submitted".

How should I show clinical audit and quality improvement work?

Describe the topic, your role, the standard you measured against, the changes made and the re-audit result. Audit and quality improvement work shows commitment to safe care and is often requested in medical applications.

Example (fictional):
"Quality Improvement Project – Venous thromboembolism risk assessment, 2023

  • Led a two-cycle audit of risk assessment completion on medical admissions.
  • Introduced an admission checklist prompt and teaching for junior doctors.
  • Re-audit showed completion improved to meet the hospital standard."

Mention presentations of the work at departmental or regional meetings. Avoid patient-identifiable details and confidential data.

How do I write a CV as a newly graduated doctor or intern?

Lead with your medical degree, internship or foundation rotations, licensing status and exams, then add electives, audits, research, teaching and extracurricular achievements. Your training is your main evidence.

Structure:

  • Personal details and licence or registration status as issued.
  • Education: medical degree, institution, year, notable distinctions.
  • Internship or foundation posts with specialties and dates.
  • Electives and clinical attachments.
  • Audits, research, presentations.
  • Courses: BLS, ACLS or similar, with dates.
  • Teaching and leadership.

Example rotation line (fictional): "Intern, General Surgery, City Teaching Hospital, Jan–Apr 2025 – ward care, pre-operative assessment, assisting in theatre."

Keep entries concise and accurate. Two pages is common at this stage.

What should a consultant or senior physician CV emphasise?

Emphasise service leadership, specialist expertise, teaching, governance and research alongside clinical practice. Senior appointments look at how you lead and develop services, not just your clinical work.

Highlight:

  • Clinical lead or head of department roles.
  • New services, clinics or pathways you developed.
  • Teaching and training roles, such as educational supervisor.
  • Governance: morbidity and mortality reviews, guideline development.
  • Research grants, publications and national committee roles.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Set up a rapid-access chest pain clinic with the cardiology nursing team, shortening waits for first assessment."
  • "Educational supervisor for six specialty trainees each year."

Keep earlier training posts brief and list them in a training history section.

How should a doctor's CV look for jobs in the UAE or Gulf?

Use a full medical CV with clear licence status, specialty, postgraduate qualifications and years of experience, plus the personal details Gulf employers commonly ask for. Licensing is handled by health authorities in each country or emirate, so check the official authority's current requirements.

Commonly included:

  • Licence held and where, and status of any Gulf licensing application.
  • Postgraduate qualifications and the countries where they were obtained.
  • Total post-qualification experience and experience at your current grade.
  • Nationality, location, notice period and visa status if asked.
  • Languages spoken with patients.

Example line (fictional): "Specialist Paediatrician – licence held in Egypt; licensing assessment with [health authority] completed, licence pending."

Describe status accurately. Employers verify licences and qualifications.

How do I show teaching experience on a medical CV?

List teaching roles, formats and audiences, plus any teaching qualifications or feedback. Teaching is valued in most physician posts, especially in training hospitals.

Examples (fictional):

  • "Delivered weekly bedside teaching for final-year medical students on the respiratory ward."
  • "Organised the junior doctor teaching programme for the medical department for one year."
  • "Simulation faculty for an acute medicine course, running scenarios and debriefs."
  • "Completed a postgraduate certificate in medical education, 2024."

Group teaching into formal and informal, if you have a lot. Include feedback summaries only if you have them in writing.

What mistakes do doctors make on their CVs?

The most common mistake is an unclear training history: gaps, overlapping posts or grades that readers in another country cannot interpret. Make every post and date easy to follow.

Other mistakes:

  • Licence or registration status described vaguely or inaccurately.
  • Patient-identifiable details in case descriptions.
  • Long lists of every course ever attended.
  • Mixing peer-reviewed publications with abstracts and posters.
  • Procedures listed without level of competence.
  • Abbreviations used only in one hospital or country.

Example fix (fictional): change "SHO Med 2019–20, Reg 2020–24" to "Senior House Officer, Internal Medicine, Riverside Hospital, 2019–2020; Specialty Registrar, Internal Medicine, Westbridge Hospital, 2020–2024."

How do I explain my training grades to employers in another country?

Add a short clarifying phrase after grade titles that may not be understood abroad, describing the level and responsibilities. Grade names vary between countries and systems.

Examples (fictional):

  • "Senior House Officer (post-internship doctor, second to third year after graduation)".
  • "Specialty Registrar, year 4 (senior trainee in a five-year specialty programme)".
  • "Resident, Internal Medicine (postgraduate training post)".

You can also include the number of years since qualification in your summary. Do not change your official title; add explanation alongside it. This helps recruiters compare your experience fairly with local candidates.

How should general practitioners and family physicians describe their work?

Describe the practice setting, patient population, services you provide and any special interests or leadership roles. Primary care work is broad, so focus on what makes your experience distinctive.

Examples (fictional):

  • "General practitioner in a practice serving about 12,000 registered patients, running daily clinics and home visits."
  • "Lead for chronic disease clinics, including diabetes and asthma reviews with the practice nurses."
  • "Trainer for GP trainees, supervising consultations and reviewing cases."
  • "Contributed to setting up telephone and video consultations."

Mention minor procedures, women's health or other services only if you are trained and active in them.

Which keywords should a physician include for hospital recruitment systems?

Include your specialty, grade, licence type, key procedures, settings and qualifications as written in the job advert. Recruitment systems and recruiters often search for these terms.

Typical physician keywords:

  • Specialty and subspecialty names
  • Grade terms: consultant, specialist, registrar, resident, attending
  • Licence and qualifications, such as MBBS, MD, MRCP, FRCS or board certification
  • Settings: tertiary hospital, outpatient clinic, emergency department, ICU
  • Activities: clinical governance, audit, teaching, research

Use full forms with abbreviations once, such as "Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP)". The job-description comparison in the builder can show which frequent advert terms are already in your CV.

What section order works for a physician CV?

A common order is: personal details, summary, licences and registration, qualifications and education, clinical experience, procedures, audit and quality improvement, research and publications, teaching, courses, memberships, references. Adjust it to the employer's template if one is provided.

Tips:

  • Licences and qualifications appear early because they decide eligibility.
  • Clinical experience comes before research for clinical posts.
  • Academic posts may move research higher.

Example headings (fictional): "Licences and Registration", "Postgraduate Qualifications", "Clinical Experience", "Audit and QI", "Publications", "Teaching".

Use clear headings and consistent date formats throughout.

How can a physician move into a non-clinical role on a resume?

Write a shorter, results-focused resume that translates clinical experience into the target role's language, such as leadership, analysis, communication or product knowledge. Non-clinical employers do not need every rotation.

Common moves: pharmaceutical medical affairs, health technology, insurance, public health, consulting, medical writing.

Steps:

  • Headline the target role: "Physician moving into medical affairs".
  • Emphasise research, guideline work, teaching, project leadership and data skills.
  • Summarise clinical training in a few lines.

Example bullet (fictional): "Led a hospital working group that produced a new sepsis guideline, coordinating six departments and training 80 staff."

Keep your licence details if still relevant, and state status honestly.

How do I explain gaps or time spent preparing for licensing exams?

Show the period with a short, factual label, such as "Preparation for licensing examinations", and add any clinical attachments, observerships, courses or research done in that time. Many international doctors have such periods.

Example (fictional):
"Licensing examination preparation and clinical observership, 2023–2024

  • Passed [licensing exam name], parts 1 and 2.
  • Clinical observer in internal medicine, Lakeside Hospital (3 months).
  • Completed ALS course and an online research methods course."

Keep it short and positive. Do not invent clinical roles. If the gap had a personal reason, a brief "Career break" line is enough.

Should I include courses like ACLS, ATLS or ALS on my CV?

Yes, list current life-support and specialist courses with provider and date, because many clinical posts ask for them. Requirements vary by employer, specialty and country, so check each job description.

Examples doctors often list:

  • Advanced Life Support or ACLS
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
  • Paediatric or Neonatal life support courses
  • Specialty courses, such as ultrasound or endoscopy training

Example (fictional): "Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), [provider], completed 06/2025."

Mark instructor status if you teach on a course. Remove very old or expired courses unless relevant, or show the renewal date.

Doctor / Physician resume builder

How should a surgeon present operative experience?

Summarise operative experience by procedure group and level of involvement, and note that a logbook is available. Surgical employers want to see the range and independence of your operating.

Example (fictional):
"Operative experience (logbook available)

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy – performed independently
  • Appendicectomy, open and laparoscopic – performed independently
  • Hernia repair – performed independently
  • Colorectal resections – performed under supervision"

Add bullets on emergency on-call, theatre list management or new techniques you introduced. Use the competence terms your training body uses. Do not quote case numbers you cannot verify.

Do doctors need references on their CV?

Many medical applications ask for referees, often including your current or most recent supervisor. Some employers want details on the CV; others collect them separately. Follow the application instructions.

If you include them:

  • Give two to three referees with name, title, department, hospital, email and phone.
  • Ask permission first and tell them which posts you are applying for.
  • Include a clinical supervisor from a recent post.

Example (fictional): "Dr Leila Hassan, Consultant Physician and Clinical Supervisor, Department of Medicine, Riverside Hospital, email and phone."

If space is limited, write "References available on request" and keep a separate referee sheet ready.

Doctor / Physician resume builder

How do I list postgraduate qualifications and board certifications?

List each qualification with its full name, awarding body and year, starting with the highest or most recent. Add the abbreviation after the full name so it is understood everywhere.

Example (fictional):
"Postgraduate Qualifications

  • Fellowship of [College name] (FRC-style qualification), 2022
  • Board certification in Internal Medicine, [Board name], 2020
  • MD Internal Medicine, [University], 2018
  • MBBS, [University], 2013"

If you are partway through a qualification, mark it clearly, such as "Part 1 passed, 2024". State equivalence or recognition only as confirmed by the relevant authority.

How should a physician describe leadership and management roles?

Describe the role, the team or service, and what changed under your leadership. Hospitals value doctors who can lead services, rotas and improvement projects.

Examples (fictional):

  • "Rota coordinator for 22 junior doctors, keeping rotas compliant with hospital rules and covering gaps."
  • "Clinical lead for the acute medical unit, working with nursing and management on patient flow."
  • "Chair of the department's morbidity and mortality meeting for two years."

Include any management training, such as a leadership course. Leadership roles held during training are also worth listing, since they show readiness for senior posts.

Doctor / Physician resume builder

How long should a physician CV be?

A medical CV is usually longer than a standard resume: two to four pages is common, and senior academic doctors may need more. Length should reflect real content, not padding.

Ways to keep it focused:

  • Group courses into one list with years.
  • Keep posts to two to four bullets each.
  • Move older, less relevant items to a short "Other experience" line.
  • List only peer-reviewed publications in full; summarise abstracts if many.

A short one- to two-page resume suits non-clinical roles or brief online forms. Follow any page limit the employer gives.

Example (fictional) compressed course line: "Courses: ALS (2025), ultrasound basics (2024), teaching skills (2023)."

Doctor / Physician resume builder

How do I describe on-call and emergency cover duties on a doctor CV?

State the on-call pattern, the areas you covered, your level of responsibility and who you escalated to. On-call experience shows how independently you work and is often a key question for hospital posts.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Participated in a one-in-six on-call rota covering medical admissions and inpatient wards overnight for a 500-bed hospital."
  • "First on-call for cardiology referrals from the emergency department, escalating to the on-call consultant as needed."
  • "Led the cardiac arrest team on night shifts as the senior medical doctor on site."

Use the rota terms your country uses, but add a short explanation if readers abroad may not understand them. Describe your role and scope, not patient cases or clinical decisions.
