Translator / Interpreter resume

This guide answers questions about writing a translator or interpreter resume. It covers summaries, how to list language pairs and direction, specialist fields, CAT tools and example bullets for legal, medical, marketing, localisation, subtitling, conference and community interpreting work. It also explains how to present certifications and sworn or legal translator status, and helps graduates, freelancers with many clients and translators moving into project management. All sample lines are fictional. Licence and accreditation rules vary by country and document type, so check with the relevant authority.

How should a translator write a resume summary?

Start with your language pairs and direction, then your specialist fields and volume or type of work. Translation clients and agencies filter first by language pair and subject.

Include:

  • Language pairs with direction, e.g. Arabic to English, English to French.
  • Specialisms: legal, medical, technical, financial, marketing, game localisation, subtitling.
  • Experience level, typical clients and tools.

Example (fictional): "Arabic to English translator with eight years specialising in legal and financial documents. Translates contracts, court documents and annual reports for law firms and banks, working in memoQ with consistent terminology management."

Example (fictional): "English to Spanish marketing and e-commerce translator, adapting product content and campaigns for Latin American audiences."

How do I list language pairs on a translator resume?

List each pair with its direction and your level of expertise in a dedicated "Language Pairs" section near the top. Direction matters because many translators work mainly into their native language.

Example (fictional):

  • "Arabic > English (main pair)"
  • "French > English"
  • "English > Arabic (selected projects, with review)"

Then list general language levels in a Languages section if helpful. Do not list pairs you would not accept professional work in.

What skills should a translator or interpreter list?

List language, subject, tool and quality skills, matched to the work you want.

Common groups:

  • Translation: language pairs, specialist fields, transcreation, localisation, proofreading, editing, post-editing machine translation.
  • Interpreting: consecutive, simultaneous, liaison, remote video interpreting, sight translation.
  • Tools: CAT tools such as Trados, memoQ, Phrase or Wordfast; terminology databases; subtitling software.
  • Quality: glossaries, style guides, QA checks, revision.
  • Business: deadline management, client communication, invoicing (if freelance).

Back the key skills with bullets showing project types and volumes.

What are good example bullets for a freelance translator?

Show volumes, subjects, clients by type and quality results.

Examples (fictional):

  • "Translated around 400,000 words a year from Arabic to English for law firms and translation agencies."
  • "Specialised in commercial contracts, powers of attorney and court judgments."
  • "Built and maintained client glossaries and translation memories in memoQ."
  • "Met all agreed deadlines on urgent projects, including weekend turnarounds."
  • "Received repeat work from 6 agencies over five years."

Describe clients by type unless they agree to be named.

How should I list translator certifications or sworn translator status?

List them in a Certifications or Accreditation section with the issuing body, language pair and year. If you are a sworn, certified or legal translator, include the licence or registration details exactly as the issuing authority requires.

Example format (fictional):

  • "Certified Translator (Arabic > English), Fictional Translators Association, 2021"
  • "Diploma in Translation, Fictional Institute of Linguists, 2019"
  • "Legal Translator Licence, Fictional Ministry of Justice, No. 1234, valid to 2027"

Whether a licence is needed depends on the country and type of document, so check with the relevant authority. Never imply accreditation you do not hold.

How is an interpreter resume different from a translator resume?

An interpreter resume focuses on spoken language work, settings and modes, while a translator resume focuses on written documents, volumes and tools. If you do both, show each clearly.

For interpreting, highlight:

  • Modes: simultaneous, consecutive, liaison, whispered, remote.
  • Settings: conferences, courts, hospitals, business meetings, government.
  • Booth or equipment experience.

Example interpreter bullet (fictional): "Provided consecutive Arabic and English interpreting for business delegations and contract negotiations."

Example translator bullet (fictional): "Translated technical manuals for industrial equipment, around 5,000 words a day."

How do I show CAT tools and technology on a translation resume?

List the tools you use regularly and the features you know, then show a bullet where tools improved quality or speed.

Example skills line (fictional): "Tools: Trados Studio, memoQ, Phrase, Xbench QA, terminology management, machine translation post-editing."

Example bullet (fictional): "Set up shared translation memories and termbases for a 5-person team, improving consistency across a large manual."

Only list tools you can use confidently, as agencies may test you.

How should a medical translator describe their specialism?

Name the document types and clients, and show quality steps such as terminology research and review. Keep it about language work, not medical advice.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Translated patient information leaflets, clinical trial documents and medical reports from French to English."
  • "Used approved glossaries and reference sources for consistent terminology."
  • "Worked with in-country reviewers on regulatory submissions for pharmaceutical clients."

List any medical translation courses in Certifications.

What keywords do translation and localisation adverts use?

Adverts often mention language pairs, specialisms, tools and quality. Use those that match you.

Typical keywords:

  • Translator, interpreter, linguist, localisation specialist
  • Language pair names and directions
  • Legal, medical, technical, financial, marketing, game localisation
  • CAT tools, Trados, memoQ, translation memory, termbase
  • Proofreading, editing, review, QA, post-editing
  • Transcreation, subtitling, transcription

Spell language names in full. The job-description comparison in the builder can show which advert terms are missing.

Steps:

  • Summary naming your pairs and interests.
  • Education with translation or linguistics modules.
  • Internships, volunteer translation or university projects.
  • Tools you have learned.

Example bullet (fictional): "Translated 20,000 words of NGO reports from Spanish to English as a volunteer, reviewed by a senior translator."

How should a conference interpreter present events?

List the types of events, languages and modes, and keep clients confidential if needed. A short list of selected assignments works well.

Example (fictional):

  • "Simultaneous interpreter (English and Arabic) at regional energy conferences, 2022 to 2025."
  • "Consecutive interpreter for ministerial meetings and trade delegations."
  • "Remote simultaneous interpreting for multinational webinars."

You can add the approximate number of interpreting days per year. Professional association membership can go in a Memberships section.

What section order works for a translator resume?

A clear order for translators:

  • Contact details
  • Summary
  • Language pairs
  • Specialisms
  • Professional experience (or selected projects)
  • Tools
  • Certifications and education
  • Professional memberships

Freelancers can use "Selected Projects" instead of a job list. Keep it to one or two pages; agencies read many resumes quickly.

What mistakes do translators make on their resumes?

The most damaging mistake is an error in the resume itself, since it is a sample of your language work.

Also check for:

  • Language pairs listed without direction.
  • Every language you have studied listed as a working language.
  • No specialisms or subject areas.
  • Vague volumes or no examples.
  • Client names or confidential documents used without permission.
  • No tools listed.

Have a native speaker of the resume's language proofread it.

Should I make my translator resume in more than one language?

Often yes. Many translators keep a resume in each main working language, especially if they apply to clients in different countries. Each version should be fully proofread by a native speaker.

Tips:

  • Keep content identical in substance.
  • Adapt date formats and section titles to each language.
  • Name the file clearly, e.g. "Rana-Haddad-Translator-CV-EN.pdf" and "...-AR.pdf" (fictional).

ResumeBuilder.ae lets you set the resume language on the Design tab, including English, Arabic (right to left), French, Spanish, German, Hindi and Malayalam.

  • "Worked with lawyers to clarify terms and keep translations consistent with legal terminology."
  • "Prepared certified translations where required by the client and authority."

  • "Localised mobile apps and websites from English to German, adapting UI text to character limits."
  • "Translated game dialogue and in-game text for an RPG, coordinating with developers on context."
  • "Performed linguistic QA on builds and reported bugs in the tracking tool."

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Subtitled documentaries and series from English to Arabic for streaming platforms, following client style guides."
  • "Spotted and timed subtitles using subtitling software."
  • "Created closed captions for corporate training videos."

Mention turnaround times and volumes if they are strong, such as "around 3 hours of content a week" (fictional).

How should a freelance translator list many small clients?

Group them under one freelance heading with client types, volumes and specialisms. A separate entry for every client makes the resume long.

Example (fictional):
"Freelance Translator (French > English), 2018 to present"

  • "Work for 8 translation agencies and 5 direct clients in law, finance and tourism."
  • "Average of around 30,000 words a month."

Add a few named clients only with permission.

How can a translator move into project management or other roles?

Lead with transferable skills: deadlines, quality control, client communication and tools. Translators often move into localisation project management, content, language teaching or international roles.

Example summary (fictional): "Translator with seven years of agency and freelance experience moving into localisation project management, skilled in coordinating linguists, translation memories and client deadlines."

Example bullet (fictional): "Coordinated a 6-language website project, assigning translators and managing review."

How should an in-house translator in a company describe their role?

Show the departments you supported, document types, volumes and any terminology work.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Translated internal communications, HR policies and board documents between English and Arabic."
  • "Built the company's bilingual glossary used by all departments."
  • "Interpreted at management meetings and visits."
  • "Reviewed translations from external agencies for quality."

  • "Reviewed and edited translations by 10 freelancers for an agency, giving feedback against the style guide."

Example bullet (fictional): "Post-edited machine-translated e-commerce content, around 8,000 words a day, to publishable quality."

Be clear about the level of editing (light or full) and the content type.

How should a community or public service interpreter describe work?

Show the settings, languages and how you maintained confidentiality and impartiality.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Interpreted for families at schools, housing offices and medical appointments in Urdu and English."
  • "Followed the agency's code of conduct for confidentiality and accuracy."
  • "Provided telephone interpreting for urgent calls."

Do not include any details about clients or cases. List interpreting qualifications with the year.

How do I show professional memberships as a translator?

List them in a Memberships section with the association, membership level and year.

Example (fictional):

  • "Member, Fictional Translators Association, since 2020"
  • "Associate, Fictional Institute of Interpreters, 2023"

Membership shows professional commitment and that you follow a code of practice, which agencies and direct clients often value. Keep it separate from accreditations or licences, because a membership is not the same as a tested credential. If you hold a committee role, mentor newer translators or speak at association events, add one short line about it, e.g. "Mentor in the association's newcomer programme, 2024" (fictional).

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Adapted advertising campaigns from English into Arabic for the UAE and Saudi markets."
  • "Proposed culturally suitable slogans and taglines with explanations for the client."
  • "Worked with brand teams to keep tone of voice consistent across languages."
