How to choose a resume template

What questions should I ask myself before choosing a resume template?

Ask a few practical questions about how the resume will be used; the answers point to the right template quickly.

Questions to ask:

  • How will I apply: through online portals, by email, or in person?
  • Which country is the job in, and which page size and conventions are usual there?
  • What is my industry's tone: conservative, technical, customer-facing or creative?
  • How much relevant content do I have: one page or two?
  • Which sections matter most for me, such as experience, projects or certifications?
  • Will I need versions in more than one language?

If most answers point to online portals, a mixed audience or uncertainty, a clean single-column template is the answer. More design freedom fits direct applications in creative fields.
