Resume length and number of pages – Page 3
How long should a resume be for a part-time job?
One page is almost always enough for a part-time job. Employers want to see relevant experience, your availability, reliability and key skills.
Include:
- A short summary noting your availability, such as evenings and weekends.
- Recent relevant jobs or volunteer roles.
- Skills such as customer service, cash handling or languages.
- Education briefly.
Keep it simple and easy to read; for part-time roles, a clear, focused page often works better than a detailed career history.
How long should my resume be when returning to work after a career break?
Use the length your experience justifies, typically one to two pages. A career break does not mean your resume needs to be shorter or longer; it means the structure should make the break clear and highlight relevant skills.
Tips:
- Note the break briefly with dates, such as "Career break for family care, 2021 to 2024".
- Include any courses, volunteering or freelance work during the break.
- Focus on achievements from earlier roles that are still relevant.
Keep it focused on what you offer now, rather than explaining the break at length.
How do I make page two of my resume look as strong as page one?
Keep the design identical and make sure page two contains real substance, not leftovers. Page two often becomes an afterthought filled with old roles and lists.
Ways to strengthen page two:
- Keep the same headings, spacing and font.
- Continue a relevant role across the page break rather than starting page two with a minor section.
- Include meaningful sections such as earlier relevant roles, certifications, projects or awards.
- Avoid ending page two with hobbies or long lists.
A reader who reaches page two should keep finding useful evidence, not filler.
Should page two of my resume start with a new section?
It is neater when it does, but it is not essential. If page one ends at the end of a section, page two starting with a new heading looks clean. If a job entry continues from page one, that is also fine, as long as a few bullets appear on each page.
What to avoid:
- A section heading alone at the bottom of page one.
- A job title on page one with all its bullets on page two.
If needed, adjust bullet length, reorder sections or add space above a heading to move the break to a natural point.
How do I check where my resume pages break before I download it?
Use the preview in your builder or editor and then check the exported PDF. Page breaks can change slightly between an editor view and the final file, so the PDF is what counts.
Steps:
- Review the live preview page by page.
- Confirm the page size (A4 or US Letter) is the one you want.
- After exporting, open the PDF and check each page break.
- Fix headings or job titles left alone at the bottom of a page.
In ResumeBuilder.ae, you can preview your resume for free before paying, and after paying the US$1.00 export fee you can download again within 7 days, up to 10 attempts, including after edits.
Is a one-page resume better for applying through job portals?
Not necessarily. Job portals and applicant tracking systems can generally handle multi-page resumes. What matters more is a clear, text-based layout with standard headings and relevant keywords.
Some portals limit file size or ask you to paste text into fields, so keep the file small and the structure simple. If a portal or employer asks for one page, follow that instruction.
Otherwise, choose length based on your experience: one page for early-career candidates and one to two pages for most experienced professionals.
Is a two-page resume OK for a graduate with a master's degree?
It can be, if you have substantial relevant content, such as a thesis with significant results, several internships, research publications or relevant work before your master's. Otherwise, one page is usually stronger.
Ask yourself:
- Would a hiring manager learn something new on page two?
- Are your projects and internships described with results, not just tasks?
If page two mainly contains coursework, school details or a long list of skills, cut back to one page. Keep a short "Selected projects" section rather than describing every assignment.
Should my printed resume for a walk-in interview be shorter than the one I email?
It does not need to be, but a concise version works well in person. At walk-in interviews and job fairs, readers often scan quickly while you are standing in front of them, so a clear one or two-page resume is easiest.
Tips:
- Bring the same version you applied with, so details match.
- If you have a long CV, bring a focused copy for the specific role.
- Print on both sheets separately, not double-sided, if it is two pages, so the reader can lay them side by side.
Make sure your phone number and email are the same on every version.
How long should a CV for a university or scholarship application be?
Usually one to two pages, unless the application specifies a format or limit. Admissions and scholarship panels want to see your education, academic achievements, research or projects, relevant work, leadership and activities.
Tips:
- Put education first, with grades if strong.
- Include research, projects, publications or awards.
- Add leadership, volunteering and relevant work experience.
- Follow any template or page limit given by the institution.
Example: "Research assistant, Department of Chemistry, 2024: prepared samples and analysed results for a study on water purification."
How long should a board or non-executive director CV be?
Board CVs are typically two pages, sometimes shorter. They focus on governance experience, board roles, sector expertise and strategic achievements, rather than day-to-day management details.
Common structure:
- Brief profile summarising your board-level value.
- Board and committee roles, with organisation and dates.
- Executive career summary, with headline achievements.
- Qualifications and relevant memberships.
Keep the language strategic and concise. Board CVs are often shared with several decision-makers, so clarity and brevity matter.
How long should a CV be for jobs in Germany?
Many German employers expect a concise CV (Lebenslauf) of one to two pages, often in a tabular, reverse chronological format. Applications in Germany traditionally include a cover letter and supporting documents, such as certificates and references, which are separate from the CV.
Tips:
- Keep the CV focused and clearly structured.
- Include dates in a consistent format for each entry.
- Follow the instructions in the job advert regarding attachments.
Conventions about personal details and photos vary, and German law prohibits discrimination in recruitment on grounds such as age, gender and ethnic origin, so you are not obliged to provide such details. ResumeBuilder.ae does not support photos in the PDF.

Should my LinkedIn profile be longer than my resume?
It can be. LinkedIn has no page limit, so it can hold more detail, such as additional projects, media, recommendations and a longer summary. Your resume should remain a focused selection tailored to each job.
Keep them consistent:
- Job titles, employers and dates should match.
- Key achievements on your resume should appear on LinkedIn too.
Use LinkedIn for extra context that does not fit on your resume, and include your profile link in your contact line so interested readers can find more.
Is a crowded one-page resume better than a spacious two-page resume?
Usually no. If your relevant content needs more than one page, a well-spaced two-page resume is easier to read and makes your achievements easier to find. A crowded single page with tiny fonts and thin margins is tiring to read and can look desperate to fit a rule.
Choose one page if you can fit your relevant content comfortably by cutting weaker material. Choose two pages if cutting further would remove strong evidence.
Readability should decide the length. A reader should be able to scan either version and quickly see your role, experience and key results.
Should I add a table of contents to a long CV?
No. Even a long academic or medical CV does not need a table of contents. Clear, consistent section headings and logical ordering let readers find what they need.
Instead:
- Use bold, distinct headings for each section.
- Put the most important sections early.
- Add page numbers and your name on every page after the first.
A table of contents adds length and looks unusual for a job application. It may also confuse applicant tracking systems that read it as content.
Can an executive resume be too short?
Yes. An executive resume of one page can leave out the scope, results and leadership evidence that senior hiring panels look for, unless the employer has asked for a one-page summary.
Signs it is too short:
- Roles listed with titles but little evidence of impact.
- No information on scope, such as teams, budgets or regions.
- Missing board, strategic or transformation achievements.
Most executives use two pages to show this well. If a one-page version is requested, keep it as a summary and have a fuller version ready to share.
Can my resume be shorter if I also send a cover letter?
Not really. The resume should stand on its own, because many readers look at it first or only at it, and cover letters are sometimes separated from resumes in application systems.
Use each document for its own job:
- The resume holds your experience, skills, qualifications and results.
- The cover letter explains why you want this role and connects your experience to it.
Do not move important achievements out of your resume into the letter to save space. Instead, keep the resume at the length your experience needs, and use the letter to highlight two or three points that matter most for this employer.
How long should an engineer's resume be with many site projects?
One page for graduate engineers and two pages for experienced engineers is common. If you have worked on many projects, select the most relevant and describe them briefly rather than listing them all.
Tips:
- Under each role, highlight two to four key projects with your role, scale and outcome.
- Use a "Selected projects" section if projects span several employers.
- Keep professional registrations and key software near the top.
- Offer a full project list separately if the employer asks.
Example: "Site engineer on a 22-storey residential tower; supervised concrete works and coordinated inspections with the consultant."
Should my resume be shorter if the online form also asks for my full work history?
Not necessarily, but you can keep it focused. When a form collects your complete work history, your resume does not need to repeat every role in detail. It can concentrate on your most relevant experience and achievements.
Keep in mind:
- Dates, titles and employers must match between the form and the resume.
- Make sure no relevant role is missing from the resume just because it is in the form.
- Use the resume to add what the form cannot show well: results, skills and context.
If the form has a text limit for each role, prepare short versions of your bullets in advance.
How long should a resume be for a senior specialist who does not manage people?
Usually two pages. Senior individual contributors, such as principal engineers, senior analysts or lead designers, often have deep technical achievements that need room to explain, even without management responsibility.
Use the space for:
- Complex projects you led technically, with scope and results.
- Specialist skills, tools and methods.
- Mentoring, standards you set or knowledge you shared.
Example: "Designed the data model for a national loyalty programme, now used by four retail brands."
Keep earlier roles brief, and avoid inflating the resume with duty lists. Depth on recent, impressive work matters more than covering every year.
