Tailoring your resume to a job

As a career changer, how do I match my old experience to a new job posting?

Make a simple two-column comparison: the posting's requirements on one side, your real evidence from any part of your life on the other. Then use that map to write your bullets and summary.

Example for a teacher applying for a learning and development role:

  • "Design training materials": Created lesson plans and assessments for 150 students.
  • "Deliver workshops to adults": Ran parent workshops and staff training sessions.
  • "Measure training effectiveness": Tracked student progress and adjusted teaching.

Rewrite the evidence using the new field's vocabulary where it is accurate. Any requirement with no evidence is a gap to address through training or your cover letter, not by stretching your experience.

This map is also useful later. It shows you which examples to use in your cover letter and gives you ready-made stories for interview questions about why you are changing careers.
