Part-time and casual jobs

Can I list working in my family's shop or business?

Yes. Work in a family business is real work, and many people start this way. Present it in the same factual way as any other job.

Tips:

  • Use the business name and a real job title, such as "Sales and Stock Assistant".
  • Describe your actual tasks: serving customers, ordering stock, keeping records, managing social media.
  • Do not inflate your title to "Manager" or "Director" because it was your family's business.

Example: "Managed the shop's online orders and Instagram page, and reordered fast-selling items from suppliers."

You do not need to say it is a family business on the resume. If an employer asks for a reference, offer someone outside your family, such as a regular supplier, a teacher or another manager you have worked with.
