Short answer: a walk-in interview is worth your morning when the role is a high-volume one that genuinely hires on the spot, the employer is real and named, and you arrive prepared. It is a poor use of time when the advert is vague, the “employer” is a third party you cannot trace, or the role is one that normally hires through a structured process anyway.
This article answers the questions people ask most often about walk-in interviews and recruitment open days in the UAE, from deciding whether to go to what happens after you leave.
Should I go? A quick test
| Go if… | Think twice if… |
|---|---|
| The employer is named and the venue is its own premises, a known hotel or a job fair | The advert gives only a phone number or a messaging app contact |
| The roles are high-volume: retail, hospitality, customer service, security, driving, warehouse, some healthcare support roles | The roles are senior or specialised and the advert promises “immediate hiring” |
| The advert lists the documents to bring and the hours | You are asked to pay for registration, “visa processing” or training |
| You meet most of the stated requirements | You match only one requirement and the venue is an hour’s drive away |
Questions before the day
How do I check a walk-in advert is genuine?
Search for the event on the employer’s own website or official social media accounts. Call the company’s main switchboard, not the number in the advert, if you are unsure. A real employer will be happy to confirm. Any request for money is a red flag: the UAE Government portal says job seekers are not required to pay any recruitment agency, and Article 6(4) of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 prohibits employers from charging workers the fees and costs of recruitment and employment. Our separate guide on UAE job scams covers the warning signs in more depth.
What should I bring?
Follow the advert’s list exactly. Where it says nothing, a sensible kit is:
- Several printed copies of your CV, tailored to the roles being filled
- Copies of your passport, visa page and Emirates ID if you have one, with the originals on you but kept in your possession
- Copies of certificates and any licence the job needs, such as a UAE driving licence or a health authority licence
- Passport-size photographs if the advert asks for them
- A pen, water and something to eat if you may wait for hours
Hand over copies only. Article 13(2) of the labour law requires employers not to withhold a worker’s official documents, and there is no reason for anyone to keep your originals at a recruitment event.
How should I adapt my CV for a walk-in?
Recruiters at open days may look at a CV for less than a minute before deciding whether to interview you. Put the details they screen for at the top: current location, visa status, notice period, languages and any licence. Keep it to one or two pages with a plain layout. A version from the resume templates library prints cleanly; if you are applying for several types of role at the same event, print a version for each. Fresh graduates may find the fresh graduate resume builder useful for a first CV with little experience.
What time should I arrive?
Early. Popular events attract long queues, and some close registration once interviewers reach capacity. Arriving at the start time also means you meet interviewers before they are tired. Check the route and parking the day before.
Questions about the day itself
What actually happens at a walk-in interview?
Formats vary by employer, but a common pattern is registration, a short screening conversation, and then for shortlisted candidates a longer interview, a practical test, or a group exercise. Hospitality and retail employers may test how you greet a customer; driving roles may include a road test; customer service roles may include a typing or language check. Expect to be told whether you have progressed the same day or later.
How do I stand out in a five-minute screening?
Prepare a 30-second introduction that answers the recruiter’s real questions: which role you want, your relevant experience, your visa status and when you can start.
Illustrative introduction: “Good morning. I am applying for the barista and cashier roles. I have two years’ experience in a busy coffee shop in Sharjah, I hold a residence visa, and I can start after a one-month notice period.”
Then stop and let them ask questions. Be polite to everyone, including the person at the registration desk. At an open day you are being observed from the moment you arrive, not only in the interview room.
Should I discuss salary at a walk-in?
If the recruiter raises it, give a realistic range for the role and ask what the package includes, such as housing, transport and annual flights. Do not accept or reject on the spot unless you are certain. We have a full guide on answering the salary expectations question in a UAE interview.
What if I am asked to sign something?
Read it first. Signing an attendance sheet or a data consent form is normal. Signing an employment contract on the day is not, and you should not sign one you have not read in full, whose terms you do not understand, or that differs from what you were told. Article 8(1) of the labour law says the contract is made in two copies, with one kept by the employer and one given to the worker, so ask for yours.
Questions after the walk-in
How long until I hear back?
For volume hiring, some employers confirm shortlisted candidates within days, while others hold CVs for future openings. If you were given a contact name, a brief follow-up email after about a week is reasonable. If you were not, apply online for the same role so you are in the employer’s system.
I received an offer at the event. What next?
Get it in writing, check that the job title, salary and benefits match what you were told, and confirm who the employing company is. You cannot legally start until the employer obtains a work permit from MoHRE: Article 6(1) of the labour law prohibits working, or employing a worker, without one. The type of permit depends on your situation; the government portal lists twelve, including permits for recruiting from abroad, for transfer between employers and for residents on family sponsorship.
Was it worth it if I got nothing?
Often yes, if you collect something useful. Note which questions you were asked, which documents you lacked, and the names of anyone you met. Use the feedback to improve your CV and your introduction before the next event. If you attended several walk-ins without a single shortlisting, the issue is usually the CV or the roles you are targeting, not bad luck.
Walk-ins compared with other routes
| Route | Speed | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk-in interview or open day | Fast when the employer is hiring in volume | Frontline and entry-level roles | Long waits; fake events exist |
| Online application | Variable | Most professional roles | Easy to be lost among many applicants |
| Referral | Often faster | All levels | Depends on your network |
| Licensed recruitment agency | Variable | Specialist and mid-level roles | Agency works for the employer, not you |
The best searches combine routes. Use walk-ins for roles where they genuinely work, and keep applying online and through contacts at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
Do walk-in interviews in the UAE ever lead to same-day offers?
Sometimes, mainly for high-volume roles where the employer has already approved headcount. Treat a same-day verbal offer as the start of the process: you still need a written offer and the employer must obtain a MoHRE work permit before you start.
Can I attend a walk-in interview on a visit visa?
Attending an interview is different from working. You may not start work until the employer holds a MoHRE work permit for you, whatever visa you entered on.
What if the advert asks for a fee to attend?
Do not pay. Job seekers are not required to pay recruitment agencies in the UAE, and employers may not charge workers recruitment costs.
Is it rude to leave if the queue is too long?
No. If you have waited a long time and cannot stay, ask a staff member whether you can leave your CV and contact details, then go. Note the name of the person you spoke to.
