Explaining employment gaps

Can you give examples of one-line gap notes for a resume?

Yes. A good gap note is one line, neutral and factual, and does not over-explain. Pick the one closest to your situation and adjust it.

Examples:

  • "Career break – caring for a family member"
  • "Career break – parental leave and childcare"
  • "Career break – health (now ready to return to work)", only if you are comfortable mentioning health at all
  • "Full-time study – MSc Data Science"
  • "Relocation from India to the UAE and job search"
  • "Planned travel break"
  • "Career break – personal reasons"

Each one gives the reader enough to understand the dates without inviting detailed questions. You can follow the line with one bullet if you did something relevant, such as a course. Avoid long sentences, apologies or reasons you would rather not discuss. If you prefer to share nothing, "Career break" alone is enough.
