Career Changes and Employment Gaps

Transferable skills – Page 2

How many transferable skills should I highlight?

Focus on three to five main transferable skills that match the target role, and show each one clearly. Trying to highlight everything makes the resume less memorable.

How to pick:

  • Count which skills appear most in your target job ads.
  • Choose the ones where you have strong, recent examples.
  • Make sure they cover different parts of the job, such as customer work, organisation and reporting.

Your skills list can be longer and include technical tools, but your summary and top bullets should keep coming back to the same few strengths. That repetition helps the reader remember you.

How do I make a skills map between my old job and a new job ad?

Make a simple two-column table: the job ad's requirements on the left, your matching evidence on the right. It shows you which skills to highlight and where your gaps are.

Steps:

  • Copy each requirement from the ad into the left column.
  • Write a real example next to it, with where and when it happened.
  • Mark each row as strong, partial or missing.
  • Use strong rows for your summary and top bullets.
  • Plan training or projects for missing rows.

Example row:
Requirement: "Coordinate shipments with freight forwarders"
Evidence: "Arranged weekly deliveries with three courier companies for the hotel's purchasing team, 2022 to 2025 (partial)"

This table is for you, not the employer, but it makes writing the resume and preparing for interviews much faster.

Can skills from parenting or running a home count as transferable?

They can help you, but present them through concrete activities rather than as a job. Phrases like "CEO of the household" tend to be seen as unprofessional, while specific roles with organisations come across well.

Ways to show these skills:

  • School or community roles: "Parent association treasurer, managed the event budget and accounts."
  • Volunteer coordination: "Organised a weekly rota of 15 volunteers for a charity food drive."
  • Courses taken during a break.
  • Freelance or part-time work, even small amounts.

You can mention a family-care period briefly on your resume if it explains a gap, but you do not need to describe the duties of parenting itself. Focus on activities where someone outside the family could confirm what you did.

Can skills from sports, hobbies or community activities count?

Yes, when they show a skill the job needs and you can describe what you actually did. Coaching a team, organising a club or running a community project can be real evidence.

Examples:

  • "Head coach, under-12 football team: plan weekly training and manage a squad of 18."
  • "Treasurer, cycling club: keep accounts and prepare an annual report for members."
  • "Organised a neighbourhood clean-up with the municipality, recruiting 40 volunteers."

Put substantial activities under Volunteer Work or Projects rather than Interests. Keep the hobby section for brief personal details that add character, and leave it out if space is tight.

The test: could you talk about this activity for two minutes in an interview, with examples that relate to the job? If yes, it is worth including.

How should a career changer present language skills?

List each language with an honest level, and show where you used it at work. Languages transfer to almost any field and are particularly valued in customer-facing roles and multinational workplaces.

Format examples:

  • "Arabic: native"
  • "English: fluent (professional working proficiency)"
  • "French: intermediate (B1)"

Then add evidence in your job bullets: "Handled guest enquiries in English, Arabic and Hindi" or "Translated product sheets for the regional sales team."

Use a recognised scale, such as the CEFR levels A1 to C2, if you know your level. Do not overstate; interviewers may switch languages to check.

How do I show experience working with diverse teams and customers?

Describe the mix of people you worked with and something you did to make the work go smoothly. In multinational workplaces, like many in the Gulf, this is a useful and transferable strength.

Examples:

  • "Supervised a team of 12 from six nationalities, adapting training for different languages."
  • "Served an international customer base in a busy airport retail store."
  • "Coordinated project updates with colleagues in Dubai, Mumbai and London across time zones."

Keep it factual and respectful. Describe the setting and your actions, not assumptions about any group. Language skills can support this point if you used them at work.

What is the difference between a transferable skill and a personal quality?

A transferable skill is something you can do and show with an example, such as scheduling, negotiating or training others. A personal quality is a trait, such as honesty, patience or being punctual. Both matter, but skills are easier to prove on paper.

How to handle each:

  • Skills: name them and back them up with bullets.
  • Qualities: show them through evidence instead of naming them. Reliability becomes "Trusted with opening the store and handling the daily cash deposit." Patience becomes "Supported elderly customers through online banking set-up."

A list of qualities like "honest, hard-working, motivated" takes space and is rarely read as evidence. Leave such words for the interview, where your manner can show them.

Career Change Resume Guide

Should I use the exact soft-skill words from the job ad?

Yes, where they honestly describe you, but always add evidence. If the ad asks for someone "resilient" and "detail-oriented", using those words helps the reader and applicant tracking systems connect your resume to the ad.

Good practice:

  • Use the ad's wording once or twice, for example in the summary or skills line.
  • Back each one up with a bullet that shows it.
  • Do not repeat every adjective from the ad; it reads as copied.

Example: the ad asks for "stakeholder communication". Your summary says "experienced in stakeholder communication", and a bullet says "Updated clients, suppliers and site teams weekly on project progress."

Never claim a quality you cannot illustrate with a real example.

Why does context matter when describing a transferable skill?

Context tells the reader how big or difficult the work was, which helps them picture you doing their job. "Managed bookings" could mean five a week or five hundred a day.

Useful context to add:

  • Volume: number of customers, orders, calls or patients.
  • Scale: team size, number of sites, budget type.
  • Pace: daily deadlines, peak seasons, emergencies.
  • Complexity: languages, regulations, multiple stakeholders.

Example:

  • Without context: "Handled customer complaints."
  • With context: "Handled escalated complaints for a 24-hour pharmacy chain with nine branches, often resolving them by phone the same day."

Only include figures you are sure of. Round them honestly ("around 60 a day") and do not reveal confidential business data.

How do I use the STAR method to write a transferable-skill bullet?

Use STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to find your story, then compress it into one bullet that keeps the action and result. STAR is usually taught for interviews, but it also helps you write stronger resume lines.

Example:

  • Situation: the clinic had long waiting times at reception.
  • Task: you were asked to improve check-in.
  • Action: you introduced a pre-filled form sent by SMS before appointments.
  • Result: queues at reception became noticeably shorter.

Resume bullet: "Introduced SMS pre-registration for appointments, shortening reception queues at a busy outpatient clinic."

Lead with a strong verb, keep the result, and drop most of the situation. Save the full STAR version for the interview, where you can tell the whole story.

I used a key skill only once, in one big project. Is that enough to list it?

Yes, if the project was substantial and you can describe it in detail. One well-explained example can be convincing, as long as you do not suggest it was your daily work.

How to present it:

  • Describe it as a project within the job: "Led the migration of customer records to a new CRM (6-month project)."
  • Give your role, scope and result.
  • Avoid adding the skill to your summary as if it were years of experience.

Example: a store manager who once ran a full refit could write: "Project-managed a store refurbishment, coordinating contractors, budget and a phased reopening with no full closure."

If the skill is central to your target role, support it with training or another project so it does not rest on a single example.

How do I show a relevant skill from a job I left many years ago?

Mention it under that old job and link it to something recent if you can. An old skill is still real, but readers will wonder whether it is current.

Approaches:

  • Keep one relevant bullet under the old role, even if other details are trimmed.
  • Mention it in your summary with an honest time frame: "earlier experience in bookkeeping".
  • Refresh it with a recent course or project, then list that too.

Example: "Earlier experience in accounts payable (2012 to 2015); refreshed skills with a Xero certification course in 2026."

Avoid presenting an old skill as current expertise. If the tools have changed a lot since then, focus on the underlying ability and show what you have learned recently.

Career Change Resume Guide

How do I avoid overclaiming a transferable skill?

Describe what you did, at the level you did it, and let the reader judge. Overclaiming usually comes from using words that suggest more responsibility or expertise than you had.

Watch for:

  • "Managed" when you assisted or coordinated.
  • "Expert" or "advanced" for tools you use occasionally.
  • Team results written as if they were yours alone.
  • Course exercises presented as real business work.

Safer wording:

  • "Supported the finance team with month-end reconciliations."
  • "Contributed to a team that reduced complaint response times."
  • "Intermediate Excel: pivot tables, lookups, charts."

Ask yourself whether a former manager would agree with each bullet. If they would add "well, partly", change the wording.

How do I show commercial awareness from a non-business role?

Show that you understood how your work affected costs, income, customers or reputation. Commercial awareness means understanding what keeps an organisation running, not working in sales.

Examples:

  • Teacher: "Helped plan open days that supported the school's enrolment targets."
  • Nurse: "Reduced waste of single-use supplies by reorganising the ward store."
  • Receptionist: "Suggested a follow-up call for unconverted enquiries; several became bookings."
  • Engineer: "Proposed a design change that reduced material costs without affecting safety."

Use language like "costs", "customers", "targets" and "efficiency" naturally where it fits. Avoid confidential figures; describing the type of impact is enough.

How do I show writing skills on my resume?

Name the kinds of documents you wrote, who read them and why they mattered. Your resume itself is also a writing sample, so keep it clear and error-free.

Examples:

  • "Wrote weekly incident reports read by the operations manager and insurer."
  • "Drafted customer letters and FAQs in plain English for the billing team."
  • "Prepared lesson plans and parent newsletters each term."
  • "Edited the company's internal newsletter, published monthly."

If writing is central to your target role, add a portfolio link or a few published pieces under Publications or Projects. Mention languages you write in professionally, too.

How do I show presentation and public speaking skills?

Mention the audience, the topic and how often you presented. Speaking skills transfer well into training, sales, management and client-facing roles.

Examples:

  • "Presented monthly safety briefings to site teams of up to 50 workers."
  • "Delivered product demonstrations to visiting customers at trade fairs."
  • "Taught classes of 30 students daily, adapting explanations for different levels."
  • "Presented a cost-saving proposal to senior management, which was approved."

If you have spoken at events, list them under Projects, Volunteer Work or Publications and Presentations with the event name and year. Avoid listing "public speaking" as a skill without any example.

How do I show that I handle complaints and difficult customers well?

Describe the kinds of complaints you dealt with, what you did and how they ended. This is one of the most transferable skills from customer-facing jobs.

Examples:

  • "Resolved escalated guest complaints, often turning them into positive reviews."
  • "Handled billing disputes by phone and email, agreeing solutions within company policy."
  • "Calmed upset patients and families in a busy emergency waiting area."
  • "Identified a recurring complaint about delivery times and suggested a new tracking update to customers."

The last example is especially strong: it shows you did not just handle complaints but helped prevent them. Roles in customer success, account management, HR and operations value this skill.

Can I show upselling or persuading customers as sales experience?

Yes, as transferable sales experience, as long as you do not call it a sales job. Look for times you recommended, persuaded, upsold or brought in business; many roles include selling without the title.

Examples:

  • Waiter: "Recommended dishes and drinks, regularly raising average bill value on my section."
  • Receptionist: "Converted phone enquiries into bookings by following up the same day."
  • Teacher: "Promoted after-school clubs to parents, increasing enrolments."
  • Engineer: "Supported the sales team with technical answers during client meetings."

If you had targets or recognition, include them. If not, describe the action and a realistic result. For a move into sales, also mention product knowledge and customer relationships; they show you will learn new products quickly.

Is health and safety experience a transferable skill?

Yes. Following and enforcing safety procedures is valued in construction, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, hospitality and facilities roles, and it shows responsibility.

How to show it:

  • Name the procedures or areas: risk assessments, incident reporting, fire drills, manual handling.
  • Include certificates, such as first aid or a recognised safety course, with the issuing body and year.
  • Show a result: inspections passed, incidents reduced, new procedures adopted.

Example: "Acted as fire warden for a 60-person office and ran six-monthly evacuation drills."

If your target role requires a specific safety qualification, check job ads and list it if you have it. Do not claim formal safety officer duties if you only followed the rules like everyone else.

How do I show supplier or vendor management?

Describe which suppliers you worked with, what you arranged and how you kept the relationship working. This skill transfers into procurement, operations, logistics and project roles.

Examples:

  • "Placed weekly orders with 10 food suppliers and checked deliveries against invoices."
  • "Compared contractor quotes for maintenance work and recommended the best value option."
  • "Followed up late deliveries and agreed credit notes for damaged goods."
  • "Kept a supplier contact list and performance notes for the purchasing manager."

Use "managed suppliers" only if you had real responsibility for choosing or reviewing them. "Coordinated with suppliers" is honest when you mainly placed orders and chased deliveries.

How do I show scheduling and rostering skills?

State whose time you organised, how many people or resources were involved and any constraints you balanced. Scheduling shows planning, fairness and problem-solving.

Examples:

  • "Created weekly rotas for 25 staff across three shifts, covering leave and sickness."
  • "Scheduled technicians for around 40 service visits a week across Dubai and Sharjah."
  • "Managed classroom and exam timetables for a department of eight teachers."
  • "Planned delivery routes for four drivers to meet customer time windows."

Mention any tools, such as rota software or a spreadsheet you built. This skill transfers well into operations coordination, logistics, HR and project support.

How do I show stock and inventory experience as a transferable skill?

Describe the stock you managed, the checks you did and any improvements you made. Inventory work is directly useful in logistics, warehousing, procurement and retail operations.

Examples:

  • "Carried out weekly stock counts and resolved differences with the system."
  • "Set reorder levels for 200 product lines to reduce stock-outs."
  • "Managed expiry date checks for medicines and arranged returns to suppliers."
  • "Received deliveries, checked them against purchase orders and logged them in the inventory system."

Name the system you used, such as an ERP or POS inventory module. For a logistics move, use the field's terms where they fit, like "goods receiving", "stock reconciliation" and "inventory accuracy".

How do I present research skills from academic work in a non-academic job?

Translate research into business tasks: finding information, analysing it, drawing conclusions and explaining them. Employers rarely need your thesis topic; they need to know what you can do with information.

Examples:

  • "Designed and ran a survey of 300 participants and analysed the results in SPSS."
  • "Reviewed and summarised published evidence for a funding proposal."
  • "Wrote a 20,000-word report and presented findings to a non-specialist audience."
  • "Managed a lab budget and ordered supplies for a team of five."

Keep academic detail short. One line naming your thesis or research area is enough unless it relates to the role. Include tools and methods, such as Excel, R, Python, interviews or literature reviews.

Career Change Resume Guide

How do I show analytical thinking if I haven't used data tools?

Show times you compared options, spotted patterns or worked out causes, even if you used paper, simple spreadsheets or observation. Analytical thinking is about reasoning, not software.

Examples:

  • "Noticed that most late deliveries came from one route and suggested a schedule change."
  • "Compared three suppliers on price, quality and delivery time before recommending one."
  • "Reviewed patient feedback forms monthly and grouped comments into themes for the manager."

If you are moving into an analytical role, add some data-tool training to support these examples, such as an Excel or SQL course. Your reasoning examples then show you already think in the right way.

Which transferable skills should I highlight for remote jobs?

Highlight skills that show you can work well without someone beside you: self-management, written communication, reliability and comfort with online tools.

Evidence ideas:

  • "Worked from home three days a week, managing my own caseload and meeting all deadlines."
  • "Coordinated with colleagues in four countries using Teams, Slack and shared drives."
  • "Wrote clear handover notes so other shifts could continue work without calls."
  • "Completed an online course while working full time."

Name the tools you know, such as video meeting software, shared documents and project trackers. Remote employers also value clear writing, so make your resume concise and well organised.
