Pakistan CV and resume guidance

This guide answers common questions about writing a CV for jobs in Pakistan. It covers the format most employers expect, how to write a +92 mobile number, which traditional personal details such as CNIC, father's name and domicile to include or leave out, and when Urdu helps. It explains how to present Matric, Intermediate, O and A Levels, board marks, CGPA, two-year degrees, DAE diplomas and results still awaited, and how to describe CA articleship, house jobs, software house work, textile and plant experience, NGO roles and government grades. The answers describe common practice only. For official rules, check the relevant authority or ask the employer.

What CV format do employers in Pakistan usually expect?

Most private employers in Pakistan expect a one- or two-page CV in English, in reverse chronological order, with clear sections for experience, education and skills. Multinationals, banks, software houses and large local groups in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad screen many CVs quickly, often through job portals or applicant tracking systems.

A common structure:

  • Header: name, professional title, mobile with +92, email and city.
  • Optional personal details: nationality, driving licence and notice period.
  • Summary: three or four lines for experienced candidates.
  • Experience: latest first, with achievements.
  • Education: degree, university, years and CGPA or marks.
  • Certifications, skills and languages.

Traditional Pakistani CVs often begin with a long personal information block. Modern employers prefer this kept short. Government jobs and some public-sector bodies use their own forms, so follow their format exactly when applying there. Send your CV as a PDF unless the employer asks for Word.

How do I write my Pakistani mobile number and address on a CV?

Write your mobile in international format, +92 followed by the number without the leading zero, and give your area and city rather than your full house address. Recruiters need to contact you and know roughly where you live, but a house number and street add nothing at this stage.

Example: "+92 3XX XXXXXXX | Gulberg, Lahore, Pakistan"

Tips:

  • Drop the "0" from "03XX" when you add +92.
  • Use a number that is active on WhatsApp.
  • An area or sector is enough, such as Clifton, DHA, Bahria Town, G-11 or Saddar.
  • Use a professional email address based on your name.

If you are open to jobs in another city, add a short line such as "Open to relocation to Islamabad".

Should I put my CNIC number on my CV?

No, leave your CNIC number off your CV. It is an identity number that can be misused, and a CV passes through many hands, inboxes and job portals.

Instead:

  • Give your CNIC only when an employer's official application form asks for it, or after an offer for contracts and payroll.
  • For government job applications, enter it in the official form, not on the CV.
  • Keep a clear scan of your CNIC ready, but share it only with verified employers.

Be careful with job posts asking for CNIC copies or fees before any interview. Check the company is genuine before sending documents.

Pakistani CVs often include father's name, date of birth, marital status and religion. Should mine?

For most private-sector jobs you can leave these out, and religion is best left off. Many traditional Pakistani CVs include a "Personal Information" block with father's name, date of birth, marital status, religion and CNIC, but modern employers mainly want your skills and experience.

A practical approach:

  • Father's name: optional; some local employers still expect it, but multinationals rarely do.
  • Date of birth: optional; provide it on application forms if asked.
  • Marital status and religion: usually leave out.
  • Nationality and driving licence: include if relevant.

If a government or local employer's form asks for these details, fill in the form accurately. The builder has no date-of-birth field, which keeps your CV concise.

Should I mention my domicile on my CV?

For private-sector jobs, you usually do not need to, but for government jobs you may be asked for it on the official application form. Domicile is often requested in Pakistan's public-sector recruitment, while private employers rarely look for it on a CV.

A simple approach:

  • Private sector: leave it out, and give your current city instead.
  • Government or semi-government roles: provide domicile on the form, exactly as your certificate shows.
  • If you prefer to include it on a CV for public-sector jobs, keep it to one line: "Domicile: Punjab (Rawalpindi)".

How domicile affects eligibility for a specific job depends on the advert and official rules. Read the job notice carefully and check the official recruitment body's instructions.

Should my CV be in English or Urdu for jobs in Pakistan?

Use English for nearly all professional jobs in Pakistan. English is the usual language of business, banking, technology and government paperwork, and most recruiters expect English CVs.

An Urdu CV can help when:

  • You apply for Urdu media, journalism or content roles.
  • A local employer or small business specifically asks for one.
  • The role mainly involves Urdu-speaking customers and you want to show strong written Urdu.

Even then, many employers accept an English CV with a Languages section showing your Urdu level.

Example: "Languages: Urdu (native), English (fluent), Punjabi (native)"

Keep the English simple and correct; ask a friend to proofread. Avoid copying complex phrases you would not use in an interview.

How do I list Matric, Intermediate, O Levels or A Levels on my CV?

List them under Education, below your degree, with the qualification, group or subjects, board or school, and year. Pakistani employers recognise both the Matric/Intermediate route and the O/A Level route, so just state yours clearly.

Example:
"Intermediate (FSc Pre-Engineering), BISE Lahore, 2020
Matriculation (Science), BISE Lahore, 2018"

Example:
"A Levels: Mathematics, Physics, Economics, [school name], Karachi, 2021
O Levels: 8 subjects, [school name], 2019"

Tips:

  • Include marks or grades if they are strong.
  • Once you have a degree and a few years of experience, you can reduce school education to one or two lines, or remove it.
  • Use the group name: FSc, FA, ICS or ICom.

How should I write board marks or "1st Division" on a Pakistani CV?

Write the marks as shown on your certificate, either as marks out of total, percentage or division, and use one style consistently. Many local employers understand divisions and marks, while international employers find marks or percentages clearer.

Example: "Intermediate (ICS), FBISE, 2021: 935/1100 (85%)"

Example: "Matriculation (Science), BISE Multan, 2019: 1st Division"

Tips:

  • Do not convert marks into GPA unless an official conversion was given.
  • If your marks are low and you have a degree, you can leave them out.
  • For university, use CGPA as printed on your transcript.

Always keep your marks accurate, because employers can check certificates.

How do I write my university degree, session and CGPA on a Pakistani CV?

Write the degree name, major, university, the years (session) and your CGPA out of the scale used. Pakistani universities often refer to the "session", such as 2020–2024, which employers understand, but writing the graduation year clearly helps international readers too.

Example:
"BS Computer Science, [university name], Lahore, 2020 to 2024
CGPA: 3.45 / 4.00"

Tips:

  • Write the degree as it appears on your degree certificate, such as BS, BBA, BSc (Hons), MBA or MPhil.
  • Add a final year project or thesis title if relevant.
  • If you are still studying, write "Expected 2027".
  • Leave out the CGPA if it is low and you have experience to show.

I have a two-year BA or BSc from Pakistan. How do I describe it alongside four-year BS degrees?

Write the exact title on your certificate, such as "BA (Two-Year Programme)", and do not label it as a four-year BS. Pakistan has had both two-year and four-year bachelor's programmes, and employers, especially abroad, sometimes ask which one you hold.

Example:
"BA (Two-Year), Economics and Political Science, University of the Punjab, 2016
MA Economics, University of the Punjab, 2018"

Tips:

  • If you also hold a master's, list it first, as it is your highest qualification.
  • Add strong experience and certifications to support your application.
  • Do not claim equivalence with a particular foreign degree on your CV.

If an employer or foreign body needs to know how your degree is assessed, refer them to the official evaluation body rather than making claims yourself.

Should I mention HEC degree attestation on my CV?

Usually no. Degree attestation is a document process for employers, embassies or foreign authorities, not a qualification, so it does not need a line on your CV. Your degree title and university are what matter.

When to mention it:

  • If a job advert specifically asks whether your degree is attested, you can add a short line under your degree: "Degree attested (HEC)."
  • When you are applying from Pakistan to jobs abroad and the employer asks.

Keep the original and attested copies ready to send if asked. For the current process, fees or requirements, check the official HEC portal or ask the employer which documents it needs. Do not state on your CV that your degree is attested if it is not.

How do I show my CA articleship or training on my CV?

List it as work experience, with the firm, your trainee title, dates and the type of assignments you handled. Articleship at an audit firm is serious professional experience for chartered accountancy students in Pakistan, and employers want to know the sectors and tasks you covered.

Example:
"Audit Trainee (Articleship), [chartered accountancy firm], Karachi, 2022 to 2025

  • Performed statutory audits of listed manufacturing and textile clients.
  • Prepared working papers and tested internal controls.
  • Supervised two junior trainees on a bank audit."

Also include:

  • Your CA, ACCA or CIMA progress, with exams passed and expected completion.
  • Software, such as audit tools and Excel.

If you hold a qualification from a professional body, write its full name once.

How do engineers show PEC registration on a CV?

Add it under Certifications or Professional Memberships, or next to your degree, with your registration type and year. Pakistani employers in engineering often check registration with the Pakistan Engineering Council, so it helps to show it clearly.

Example: "Registered Engineer, Pakistan Engineering Council, since 2021"

Tips:

  • Write your registration number only if an employer asks for it.
  • If you are a professional engineer, write the exact category you hold.
  • If the role or country requires a licence or registration, list it as the regulator requires, with any expiry date.

For overseas jobs, add international certifications or memberships separately, and follow the employer's instructions on documents.

I'm a doctor in Pakistan. How do I show my house job and postgraduate training on my CV?

List your house job as experience with the hospital, departments and dates, then add postgraduate training with your programme, year and stage. Pakistani medical CVs are read carefully for training stages, so be precise.

Example:
"House Officer, [teaching hospital], Lahore, 2022 to 2023

  • Rotations: Medicine (6 months), Surgery (6 months)"

"Postgraduate Resident, FCPS Internal Medicine, [hospital name], 2023 to present

  • FCPS Part 1 passed, 2023"

Also include:

  • Registration with the medical regulator, with number and expiry only if requested.
  • Life-support certificates with expiry dates.
  • Research, audits or presentations.

For jobs abroad, follow the employer's or regulator's instructions on additional documents.

How should I present textile industry experience in Pakistan?

State the part of the textile chain you worked in, your role and your results in quality, output or exports. Textiles are one of Pakistan's largest industries, with spinning, weaving, processing and garment units in Faisalabad, Lahore, Karachi and elsewhere.

Example:
"Merchandiser, [textile company], Faisalabad, 2021 to 2026

  • Managed orders for three European home-textile buyers.
  • Coordinated sampling, approvals and shipment schedules."

Include:

  • Section: spinning, weaving, dyeing, stitching, merchandising, quality.
  • Standards or audits: buyer compliance, ISO or social audits.
  • Systems: ERP and production planning tools.

Mention buyer markets in general terms if names are confidential.

I work at a software house in Pakistan on foreign client projects. How do I describe it?

Name the software house, then list the projects or product types you worked on, the clients' sectors and markets, and your technical contribution. Many Pakistani software houses build products for clients in the US, UK, Europe and the Gulf, and recruiters want to know what you built.

Example:
"Senior Software Engineer, [software house], Islamabad, 2021 to 2026

  • Built a React Native app for a US healthcare client, used by thousands of patients.
  • Designed microservices in Node.js for a Gulf e-commerce platform."

Tips:

  • Describe clients by sector and country if names are confidential.
  • Show your stack clearly in a Skills section.
  • Mention direct client communication, which is valuable.

How do I tailor my CV for a bank's Management Trainee Officer programme in Pakistan?

Show strong academics, leadership, communication and an interest in banking, all on one page. Banks in Pakistan often run trainee officer programmes for fresh graduates, with tests and interviews, so your CV must show potential rather than experience.

Include:

  • Degree, university and CGPA, if strong.
  • Internships at banks or financial institutions.
  • Leadership roles in societies, sports or volunteering.
  • Skills: Excel, financial analysis, communication.
  • Any certificates, such as Islamic banking or financial modelling courses.

Example: "Finance Secretary, [university] Business Society: managed a budget for six annual events."

Write a short objective naming the programme.

My government job was BPS-17. How do I write it on a CV for the private sector?

Write your job title first, then add the grade in brackets, and show your level through responsibilities. Private employers may not understand Basic Pay Scale grades, but they understand team sizes, budgets and decisions.

Example:
"Assistant Director, Planning (BPS-17), [department name], Islamabad, 2019 to 2026

  • Prepared development project proposals and monitored progress.
  • Supervised four staff and coordinated with provincial departments."

Tips:

  • Translate internal terms, such as "PC-1", into plain words: "project proposal documents".
  • Highlight transferable skills: planning, budgeting, procurement, reporting.
  • Put a summary at the top that names the private-sector role you want.

Should I list Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi or Saraiki on my CV?

Yes, list them if you speak them well, especially for jobs dealing with customers, field work or communities in those regions. Regional languages are useful for sales, healthcare, development and customer service roles across Pakistan.

Example:
"Languages: Urdu (native), English (fluent), Pashto (native), Punjabi (conversational)"

Tips:

  • Put the most relevant languages first, usually English and Urdu.
  • Use clear levels: native, fluent, conversational, basic.
  • Show use at work: "Conducted farmer training sessions in Sindhi and Urdu."

If you are applying abroad, regional languages may matter less, but they can still help in community or customer-facing roles.

How do teachers in Pakistan show O/A Level experience versus Matric board experience?

State the curriculum and grades you taught at the top of each teaching role, because private school chains and elite schools often hire specifically for Cambridge experience. Matric board experience is also valuable, especially for public schools and colleges.

Example:
"O Level Physics Teacher, [school name], Lahore, 2020 to 2026

  • Taught Physics to Grades 9 to 11 for Cambridge exams.
  • Ran revision workshops and lab practicals."

Include:

  • Subjects and grade levels.
  • Exam results or improvements, if shared by the school.
  • Training: Cambridge workshops, teaching certificates or B.Ed.
  • Extra roles: coordinator, exam officer, club lead.

If you are moving from Matric to O Level teaching, show self-study of the syllabus and any tutoring in it.

How do I present my final year project (FYP) on a Pakistani CV?

Give it a separate entry under Projects, with the title, a one-line description, your role, tools used and the result. In Pakistan, the FYP is a key part of computing and engineering degrees, and recruiters often ask about it at interview.

Example:
"Final Year Project: Smart Parking System using IoT, 2024

  • Built sensors and a mobile app to show free parking spaces on campus.
  • Led a team of three; handled backend development in Python."

Tips:

  • Add a link to a demo, GitHub repository or report.
  • Mention any funding or competition awards.
  • Use keywords that match the job, such as IoT, machine learning or embedded systems.

My final result is not out yet. Can I write "Result Awaited" on my CV?

Yes, "Result Awaited" or "Expected" is a common and honest way to show a qualification you have finished but not received results for. Pakistani employers understand this, especially for graduates applying in the months after exams.

Example:
"BBA (Hons), [university name], 2022 to 2026, Result Awaited"

Tips:

  • Add your CGPA up to the last semester if it is strong: "CGPA (up to 7th semester): 3.5 / 4.0".
  • Update your CV as soon as the result is announced.
  • Do not write a final grade you have not received.

The same approach works for professional exams: "ACCA Strategic Professional, exam taken Sep 2026, result awaited."

How should engineers present experience at cement, sugar or fertiliser plants in Pakistan?

Show the plant type, your section, the equipment you handled and your results in uptime, output or safety. These process industries are major employers of engineers and technicians in Pakistan, and employers often look for plant-specific experience.

Example:
"Shift Engineer, Electrical, [sugar mill], Rahim Yar Khan, 2021 to 2026

  • Maintained turbines, motors and distribution panels during crushing seasons.
  • Reduced breakdowns through a preventive maintenance schedule."

Include:

  • Section: kiln, mill, boiler, power house, ammonia or urea plant.
  • Systems: DCS, PLC, SCADA, maintenance software.
  • Safety training and permits.

If the work is seasonal, such as crushing seasons in sugar mills, mention it so dates make sense.

Should I mention that I am a Hafiz-e-Quran on my CV?

Include it if it relates to the job or you want to show discipline and commitment, and keep it short. Some Pakistani employers value it, especially schools, Islamic institutions and community organisations, but many private employers will focus on your professional skills.

Options:

  • For teaching Quran, Islamic studies or related roles: list it under Education or Certifications, with the institution and year.
  • For other roles: you can add it under Achievements or leave it out.

Example: "Hafiz-e-Quran, [madrasa name], 2014"

Keep the CV focused on the job. Religion is otherwise a personal matter and does not need its own line.

I worked for a Chinese company on a CPEC project. How do I present it?

Present it like any other role, with the company, project type, your role and results, and add Chinese language skills if you have them. Many Pakistani engineers, interpreters, administrators and technicians have worked on energy, road and port projects under CPEC, and this experience is valued.

Example:
"HR and Admin Officer, [Chinese contractor], hydropower project, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2019 to 2024

  • Managed local hiring and payroll for 300 workers.
  • Acted as liaison between Chinese managers and local staff."

Tips:

  • List Chinese language level, such as HSK level, if you have one.
  • Mention cross-cultural communication and safety standards.
  • Describe the project in general terms.
