Qatar CV and resume guidance – Page 2
What should my CV show for media and broadcasting jobs in Doha?
Show your production or editorial credits, languages and the formats you have worked in, with a link to a portfolio or showreel. Doha has international and Arabic-language media organisations, and they often hire people from many countries.
Include:
- Credits: programmes, series or digital channels, with your exact role.
- Languages: Arabic and English levels, and any others used on air or in editing.
- Tools: editing, graphics or newsroom systems.
- Results: audience growth, awards, breaking-news work.
Keep the CV itself text-based and put visual work in your portfolio link. Be careful about naming unpublished projects or sharing confidential material.
Many Qatar jobs are recruited through agencies in the UK. Should my CV follow UK style?
Use a clear international style that works for both. UK-based recruiters hiring for Qatar may expect a UK-type CV, which usually leaves out photos and many personal details, while the final employer in Qatar may want nationality, residence status and notice period.
A practical compromise:
- Keep personal details short: nationality, current location, notice period.
- Leave out date of birth, marital status and photo unless asked.
- Use A4 and British spelling.
- Make achievements the focus.
If the recruiter asks you to add Gulf-style details for the client, update the CV then. The builder lets you include or leave out optional personal details for each version.
How do I show green building or sustainability experience on a CV for Qatar?
Name the rating systems, certifications and measurable outcomes you have worked with. Sustainability has been a priority on many Qatari projects, and employers in design, construction and facilities often look for it.
Show it with:
- Certifications or accreditations you hold, with issuer and year.
- Projects that achieved a green building rating, with the rating level.
- Results such as energy or water savings: Example: "Reduced chilled-water consumption by 12% after commissioning review."
- Tools for energy modelling or sustainability reporting.
Do not claim a professional accreditation you do not hold. If you supported a rating process without being the accredited professional, say "supported certification documentation".
How should I present facilities management experience for jobs in Qatar?
Show the type and size of facilities, the services you managed and the results. Qatar has many large venues, towers, hospitals, schools and residential compounds that need facilities management, so recruiters look for experience at scale.
Include:
- Facility type and size: "12 residential towers, 1,800 units".
- Services: hard FM (MEP maintenance) and soft FM (cleaning, security, landscaping).
- Contract or performance measures you met, such as response times.
- Systems: computer-aided facility management (CAFM) tools.
- Team size and subcontractors managed.
Use clear bullets with numbers. Many FM roles are filled through online portals, so a simple, single-column layout reads best.
Should I write "Doha, Qatar" or "State of Qatar" on my CV?
Write "Doha, Qatar", or the relevant city followed by "Qatar". It is short, clear and easy for recruiters and applicant tracking systems to read. "State of Qatar" is the formal name but is not needed on a CV.
Tips:
- Use the same format for every location: "Al Wakrah, Qatar", "Lusail, Qatar".
- For industrial or remote sites, use the site name and country: "Ras Laffan, Qatar".
- In your header, show where you live now.
If you write an Arabic version, use the standard Arabic city and country names there.
How do I describe work with VIP or high-profile clients in Qatar without breaching discretion?
Describe the service level and your responsibilities without naming the people. Many hospitality, aviation, security, events and private service roles in Qatar involve VIP guests, and employers expect discretion.
Examples:
- "Delivered personalised service to VIP and dignitary guests in a private lounge."
- "Coordinated protocol and logistics for senior government delegations."
- "Managed confidential travel arrangements for C-suite executives."
Avoid names, photos and stories from these clients, even if you have them. Recruiters in these sectors often see discretion on the CV as a sign of professionalism.
I was seconded to Qatar by my home-country employer. How do I show it?
Keep your employer as the company, then show the secondment as a separate line or role with the Qatar location and dates. This keeps your employment history accurate while making your Qatar experience visible.
Example:
"Northbridge Consulting, London, UK
- Senior Consultant (seconded to a client in Doha, Qatar), 2024 to 2026
- Consultant, 2021 to 2024"
In the secondment bullets, describe your client work and results in Qatar. If you want to stay in Qatar after the secondment, say so in your summary and show your location and availability.
I live in another GCC country. What should my CV highlight for jobs in Qatar?
Highlight your Gulf experience, your availability to relocate and any Qatar-related work you have done. Qatari employers often see regional candidates as quick to settle in.
Include:
- Location and plans: "Dubai, UAE (relocating to Doha in 2027)".
- Notice period and nationality, if comfortable.
- Qatar clients, projects or business trips in your bullets.
- Regional responsibilities, such as covering several GCC markets.
If you are a GCC national, make your nationality visible, since it may matter for some employers' processes. Check rules about working in Qatar on the official government portal or ask the employer.
A Qatar employer sent me its own CV form. Do I still need my CV?
Yes. Fill in the form exactly as asked, and attach or keep your CV ready unless they say not to. Some employers in Qatar, especially government-linked bodies and large companies, use standard forms so they can compare candidates in the same format.
Tips:
- Copy dates, titles and qualifications from your CV so everything matches.
- Answer every field; write "Not applicable" instead of leaving gaps.
- Use the form's language; if it is in Arabic and English, follow its instructions.
- Keep a copy of what you submitted.
Your CV is still useful for interviews and for recruiters who want a quick overview.
What should my CV show for sports and fitness sector jobs in Qatar?
Show coaching or sports-science qualifications, the level of athletes you worked with, and measurable results. Qatar has invested heavily in sports, with academies, clubs, events and fitness facilities, and roles range from coaching to sports medicine and event operations.
Include:
- Qualifications: coaching licences, sports science degrees, first aid.
- Athlete level: youth academy, national team, recreational members.
- Results: performance gains, competition outcomes, member retention.
- Languages, especially Arabic and English.
If you have worked at major events or with international federations, describe your role while respecting confidentiality.
How do I prepare a CV for research jobs in Qatar?
Use an academic or research CV with your degrees, research areas, publications, grants and technical skills. Qatar has research institutes and university research centres in areas such as energy, environment, health and computing.
Structure:
- Research interests: one or two lines.
- Education: degrees, thesis titles, supervisors if relevant.
- Research experience: projects, methods, results.
- Publications: in a consistent citation style.
- Grants and awards.
- Technical skills: lab methods, software, data tools.
This CV can be longer than two pages. Tailor the first page to the institute's research themes, which are usually described on its website.
How do I show supplier development or local content work in Qatar's energy sector?
Describe the programme you supported, your role and measurable results. Many energy and industrial companies in the Gulf run programmes to develop local suppliers and in-country value, and procurement or supply-chain specialists with this experience are valued.
Examples:
- "Qualified 14 new local suppliers for maintenance services under the client's local content programme."
- "Built a supplier development plan that moved fabrication of small components in-country."
- "Tracked and reported local content data for quarterly reviews."
Do not describe the rules of any government programme on your CV. Focus on your work and results.
How do I apply for start-up and tech jobs in Doha?
Use a concise, results-focused CV with your technical stack, products you built and links to your work. Doha has a growing start-up and technology scene, supported by incubators and accelerators, and these employers often move faster and value hands-on skills.
Include:
- A summary naming your role and specialism.
- Products or features you shipped, with user or performance results.
- Your tech stack and tools.
- Links: GitHub, portfolio or product pages.
- Arabic language skills, if relevant for local users.
Keep it to one or two pages. Start-ups often appreciate a short, personal email from you, but follow their application instructions first.
The profession on my Qatar residence permit differs from my real job title. Which goes on my CV?
Put your real job title, the one on your contract, payslips or experience letter, because your CV describes the work you did. In the Gulf it is not unusual for the profession printed on a residence document to differ from a person's day-to-day title.
Be prepared:
- Keep an experience letter that confirms your actual title and duties.
- If a new employer asks about the difference, explain it calmly and factually.
- Do not change your CV title to match the permit if it does not reflect your work.
Questions about how the profession on your documents affects future employment depend on official rules; check the official government portal or ask the employer.
Should I list volunteering at events in Qatar on my CV?
Yes, especially if you are a student, graduate or changing careers. Qatar has hosted many large sporting, cultural and business events that relied on volunteers, and the experience shows teamwork, communication and reliability.
How to present it:
"Volunteer, Spectator Services, international sporting tournament, Doha, Qatar, 2022
- Guided up to 5,000 visitors per match day in English and Arabic.
- Handled lost-and-found and accessibility requests."
Put it in a Volunteer Work section, or under experience if it is your most relevant work. Keep it short if you have plenty of paid experience.
