Saudi Arabia CV and resume guidance – Page 2

I've worked in Saudi Arabia for 15 years. How do I keep my CV to two pages?

Give full detail to the last ten years or so, and summarise the rest. Long careers in the Kingdom are common, especially with one or two employers, and recruiters mainly want to see what you have done recently.

How to trim:

  • Recent roles: three to six achievement bullets each.
  • Older roles: one line each, or a short "Earlier career" entry: "Earlier roles: Site Engineer and Assistant Site Engineer, Al Bayan Contracting, Dammam, 2010 to 2015".
  • Remove routine duties that every person in your role does.
  • Group repeated training courses into one line.

Keep older achievements only if they are still impressive or relevant. Two pages is plenty for most experienced candidates.

How to Write a Resume: Step by Step

Some Saudi technician CVs say "client approved". What does that mean, and should I use it?

It usually means a client, such as a major operator, has formally approved you for a specific role, for example as an inspector or supervisor on its sites. In parts of the Saudi energy and industrial sectors this approval is valued because it can shorten mobilisation.

Use it only if it is true and you can prove it:

  • Write the role and the client type: "Approved QA/QC Inspector (Coating) for a national oil company client, 2023".
  • Keep a copy of the approval letter or card, as employers may ask.
  • Do not imply approvals from clients you only worked near.

If you are not sure your approval is still valid, write the year it was granted rather than saying "currently approved".

Should I write "KSA" or "Saudi Arabia" on my CV?

Write "Saudi Arabia" in full at least once, and use "KSA" only if space is tight. Recruiters in the region know "KSA" (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), but international recruiters and applicant tracking systems may search for "Saudi Arabia".

Practical approach:

  • Location lines: "Riyadh, Saudi Arabia".
  • Summary: "eight years of experience in Saudi Arabia and the UAE".
  • Avoid mixing "KSA", "K.S.A." and "Saudi" randomly; choose one style and keep it.

If an advert uses "KSA", you can include both in your summary: "Saudi Arabia (KSA)". That helps keyword matching without looking odd.

Do Saudi employers expect a cover letter with a CV?

Not always. Many Saudi employers and agencies shortlist from the CV alone, especially for volume hiring through portals. A short cover letter or email still helps when you apply directly to a company, when the advert asks for one, or for professional and managerial roles.

When you write one:

  • Keep it to three short paragraphs.
  • Name the role, explain your fit with two examples, and state availability and location.
  • Mention Saudi or Gulf experience if you have it.

If a portal has no space for a cover letter, put a two-line note in the application message instead. You can write a matching cover letter in the builder and download it with your CV.

I've worked on dozens of projects in Saudi Arabia. How do I list them without a five-page CV?

Show your best few projects in the main CV and move the full list to a short project annex or to a list you share on request. Engineering and construction CVs in the Gulf often grow very long because every project is listed, which hides the important ones.

A practical structure:

  • Under each job, list three to five key projects with client type, value or scale, and your role.
  • Add a line: "Full project list available on request."
  • Create a separate one-page "Project List" if employers in your field commonly ask for it.

Example: "Lead Electrical Engineer, 33/11 kV substation package for an industrial city client; delivered two months ahead of schedule."

Where do people usually look for jobs in Saudi Arabia, and how does that affect my CV?

Job seekers in Saudi Arabia commonly use regional job boards, LinkedIn, company career pages, recruitment agencies (both local and in sending countries) and national employment platforms for citizens. Each channel suits a slightly different version of your CV.

  • Job boards and company sites: use a clean, single-column PDF so their systems can read it.
  • LinkedIn: keep titles and dates identical to your CV, and set your location to your Saudi city.
  • Agencies: lead with the role, years of experience and personal details they ask for.
  • National platforms for citizens: complete your profile carefully and keep an Arabic version ready if needed.

Always read the application instructions about file type, language and size. Applying through several channels at once is normal, but keep a simple list of where you applied and which version of your CV you sent, so you can answer recruiters confidently when they call.

I ran my own small business (establishment) in Saudi Arabia. How do I list it?

List it as a job with a title such as "Founder" or "Owner and Manager", the business name, city and dates, then show what you achieved. Running an establishment shows initiative, financial responsibility and people management.

Example:
"Owner and Manager, Al Waha Mobile Repairs Est., Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, 2021 to 2025

  • Built a customer base of 1,500 repeat clients.
  • Managed three technicians, stock purchasing and monthly accounts."

Leave out registration numbers and licence details. If you are moving into employment, explain in your summary what you want next: "Seeking a store or operations manager role after running my own retail business."

How do I translate my Arabic job title from a Saudi government body into English?

Use the organisation's own English translation if it has one; if not, translate the meaning plainly and keep the Arabic title on any Arabic version of your CV. Government titles in Arabic can be long and formal, and a word-for-word translation may confuse recruiters.

Steps:

  • Check your English-language appointment letters, email signatures or the organisation's English website.
  • If none exist, use a clear functional title: "Senior Administrative Specialist, Human Resources".
  • In bullets, explain your responsibilities and level, for example the size of team or budget.

Avoid upgrading the title in translation. A reader should be able to match it to your official records if they check.

Large Saudi companies run graduate development programmes. How do I tailor my CV for them?

Show potential: strong academics, relevant co-op or internships, leadership and English. Graduate development programmes at large Saudi companies often receive many applications, and they usually look for evidence that you can learn quickly and work in teams.

Tailor by:

  • Putting education first, with GPA and the scale, if strong.
  • Listing co-op training and projects with real outcomes.
  • Including leadership in student clubs, competitions or volunteering.
  • Matching skills to the programme track, such as finance, engineering or IT.
  • Keeping it to one page if possible.

Read each programme's eligibility criteria carefully, as some are only open to certain graduates. Apply through the official careers page.

I'm from another GCC country. Should my CV for Saudi jobs say so?

Yes, include your nationality clearly, because employers and recruiters may treat GCC nationals differently from other candidates in their hiring processes. The details depend on rules and employer policies that you should check on the official government portal or with the employer.

How to show it:

  • Personal details: "Nationality: Bahraini" (or Kuwaiti, Emirati, Omani, Qatari).
  • Location: your current city, and whether you would relocate or commute.
  • Languages: Arabic and English at your true levels.

If you live near the border and could commute, for example from Bahrain to the Eastern Province, mention it in your location line.

Should I name my sponsor (kafeel) on my CV?

No. Your CV should name your employers, not your sponsor or any individual who supports your residence. Recruiters do not need this information to assess your skills, and it can raise questions you do not need to answer at this stage.

What to include instead:

  • Your employer's name, location, your title and dates.
  • An optional residency line such as "Residency: Iqama holder, Riyadh".

If an employer later needs details of your current residency arrangements, they will ask, and the process depends on rules set by the government. Check the official government portal or ask the employer's HR team rather than putting assumptions on your CV.

I left Saudi Arabia and want to return. What should my CV say about my status?

Show your current location honestly and say you are seeking to return, without making claims about your visa situation. Saudi employers can see from your experience that you know the country.

Example header: "Karachi, Pakistan (previously Riyadh, 6 years; seeking to return to Saudi Arabia)"

Also:

  • Keep your Saudi roles detailed, with cities.
  • Add your availability: "Available to travel within 30 days of offer".
  • Mention any Saudi-specific training, licences or approvals, with years.

Whether you can return and on what basis depends on official rules and the new employer's process. Check the official government portal or ask the employer rather than writing assumptions on your CV.

How do I show a long career at one Saudi company with several promotions?

List the company once and show each title underneath with its own dates. This makes your progression obvious, which is one of the strongest signals on a CV.

Example:
"Al Faisal Petrochemicals Co., Jubail, Saudi Arabia

  • Maintenance Superintendent, 2021 to Present
  • Senior Maintenance Engineer, 2016 to 2021
  • Maintenance Engineer, 2012 to 2016"

Put most of your bullets under the current role, two or three under the previous one, and one under the earliest. Mention the promotions in your summary too: "promoted three times in 12 years". Recruiters value loyalty combined with growth.

I speak Egyptian or Levantine Arabic. Should I say so on a Saudi CV?

You can list Arabic as native or fluent without naming the dialect in most cases. Saudi employers mainly want to know you can communicate in Arabic with colleagues and customers, and Arabic speakers from different countries usually understand each other well.

Mention the dialect only when it helps:

  • For call centres or customer service serving specific markets, "Arabic (native, Egyptian dialect; comfortable with Gulf dialect)" can be useful.
  • For translation, content or media roles, listing your dialects and Modern Standard Arabic separately shows range.

Do not list a dialect you only understand passively. Being clear about your strengths avoids surprises in interview.

Should I include my Saudi national address on my CV?

No, your city and, if you like, your district are enough. A full address, building number or postcode adds nothing for a recruiter and exposes personal information. Employers collect your full address securely when they hire you.

Write your location like this:

  • "Riyadh, Saudi Arabia"
  • "Al Khobar, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia"

If an online form asks for a full address or postcode, fill it in there as requested. On the CV itself, short location lines also help applicant tracking systems read your contact details correctly.

My Saudi experience certificate is only in Arabic. Should my CV match the Arabic wording?

Your English CV should match its meaning, especially the title and dates. Employers who check documents compare them, so a consistent translation avoids questions.

Tips:

  • Translate the job title faithfully: if it says "محاسب أول", write "Senior Accountant".
  • Use the exact start and end dates on the certificate.
  • If the company's English name is different from the Arabic, use the official English name.
  • Keep the original certificate. Some employers may ask for a translation or other formal steps; follow their instructions and check official sources for document requirements.

If you are unsure how a formal title should be translated, ask your former HR department for an English version.

I worked part-time in a café while studying in Riyadh. Does it belong on my CV?

Yes. Part-time jobs show reliability, customer service and teamwork, which employers value in graduates, and recruiters generally see it positively.

How to present it:
"Barista (part-time), Bean Street Café, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 2024 to 2026

  • Served up to 200 customers per shift during peak hours.
  • Trained four new staff on drink preparation and hygiene standards."

Put it under Work Experience if you have little other experience, or under a "Part-time Work" heading if you have internships to show first. Keep it brief if you apply for professional roles, but do not leave it out.

Should I list my Qudurat or Tahsili scores on my CV?

Usually not, once you have a university degree. Employers look at your degree, GPA, training and skills rather than school-leaving aptitude tests. These scores are mainly used for university admission.

They can be worth adding when:

  • You are still a high school student or recent school leaver applying for a scholarship, training programme or entry-level job.
  • An application form specifically asks for them.

If you include them, put them under Education: "General Aptitude Test (Qudurat): [score], 2024". For graduates, use the space for internships, projects and certifications instead.

How do I show that I trained and developed Saudi colleagues?

Write it as a clear achievement with numbers and outcomes. Many employers in Saudi Arabia value managers and specialists who build local talent, and this experience can be a strength for experienced expatriates and senior Saudi staff alike.

Examples:

  • "Mentored 8 Saudi graduate engineers; 5 were promoted to site engineer within two years."
  • "Designed a six-month on-the-job training plan for new national hires in customer service."
  • "Handed over planning responsibilities to a Saudi successor before reassignment."

Keep the focus on skills and results. Do not make statements about employer quotas or localisation rules on your CV.

I worked in Saudi Arabia on rotation while living abroad. Does that count as Saudi experience?

Yes, it is real work experience in Saudi Arabia, so show it clearly. Rotational work is common in oil and gas, mining, construction and some healthcare roles, and recruiters understand it.

How to show it:

  • Location: the site or city in Saudi Arabia, not your home country: "Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia (rotational, 28/28)".
  • Employer: the company that employed you.
  • Bullets: your achievements on site.

In your summary you can write "five years of rotational experience at Saudi Arabian oil and gas facilities". If you were mainly home-based with short visits, describe it honestly, for example "regular site visits to Saudi Arabia".

How should accountants show local and international qualifications for Saudi jobs?

List every professional qualification you hold in a Certifications section, with the full name, issuing body, membership status and year. Saudi employers often recognise international qualifications such as ACCA, CMA, CPA and CFA, and some roles also look for local professional fellowships.

Example:

  • "ACCA Member, 2021"
  • "CMA (Certified Management Accountant), 2023"
  • "Local accounting fellowship: Part 2 passed, 2025"

If you are studying, write "in progress" with the papers passed. Whether a particular qualification is required for a role, such as signing audit reports, is decided by regulators and employers, so check their instructions rather than assuming.

A job asks for "KSA experience", but mine is in Kuwait and the UAE. Should I still apply?

Yes, if you meet the other requirements, but show your regional experience clearly and explain how it transfers. "KSA experience" often means the employer wants someone who knows similar clients, standards, suppliers or working conditions, and nearby Gulf experience can be close.

How to present it:

  • Summary: "Nine years of GCC experience in Kuwait and the UAE, with Saudi clients and suppliers."
  • Bullets: mention any Saudi projects, clients or business trips.
  • Cover letter: one sentence on why your experience transfers.

Do not claim Saudi experience you do not have. Some employers will only accept in-Kingdom experience, and that is their choice.

Should I put "Eng." or "Dr." before my name on a Saudi CV?

You can, but it is cleaner to show your qualification in your professional title or education instead. In Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries, "Eng." and "Dr." are common forms of address, so using them is not unusual, but international recruiters and applicant tracking systems may read them as part of your name.

Options:

  • Name line: "Khalid Al Harbi". Title line: "Senior Civil Engineer".
  • Name line: "Dr. Huda Al Qahtani" if you hold a doctorate or medical degree and it is relevant to the job.

If you use a prefix, use it the same way on your CV, email signature and LinkedIn, and only if you hold the degree it implies.

Should I state the rotation schedule I worked on Saudi oil and gas sites?

Yes, briefly, because it tells employers you are used to the working pattern they may offer. Rotations such as 28/28, 21/21 or 60/30 are common in the sector, and recruiters filling similar roles often want to know.

Where to put it:

  • In the job line: "Drilling Supervisor (28/28 rotation)".
  • In your summary if rotational work is what you are seeking: "Open to rotational assignments in the Gulf."

Do not let it replace achievements. Your bullets should still show safety records, uptime, crews supervised and problems solved. If you also worked residential (living locally), you can say so for those roles.

How do I present a diploma from a Saudi technical college?

List it under Education with the full diploma title, specialisation, college, city and year, and add practical training that was part of the course. Technical and vocational diplomas are valued for technician, maintenance, IT support and similar roles.

Example:
"Diploma in Electrical Technology (Power Systems), [technical college], Dammam, Saudi Arabia, 2025

  • Completed on-the-job training at an industrial maintenance contractor."

Also list any specific skills or tools you learned in your Skills section, such as PLC basics, wiring standards or network configuration. If you continued to a bachelor's degree, put that above the diploma.
