How do I research what to put in an expected salary field?

Look at several reliable sources for the role, level and location, then decide on an amount or range you can justify. Research before you apply, so you are not guessing under pressure.

Reliable sources:

  • Official labour market data published by government agencies, where available.
  • Salary guides published by established recruitment firms for your country or region.
  • Pay information in job adverts for similar roles.
  • Conversations with people in the field, recruiters or professional associations.

Then consider:

  • Your experience compared with the role's level.
  • The full package: allowances, housing, transport, bonus, leave and insurance.
  • Cost of living in the city.

Write down your reasoning so you can explain your answer at interview. Treat online figures with caution, as self-reported data may be incomplete.
