  • "I am applying for the Property Consultant role in your Dubai Marina office. Over the past two years, I have handled sales and rentals of apartments in the area and built a network of repeat landlords."

How should a banking candidate open a cover letter?

Name your banking area, such as retail, corporate, operations or compliance, and a customer or accuracy result.

  • "As a trade finance officer who processes letters of credit for manufacturing clients, I would like to apply for your Senior Trade Operations Officer position."

Is it good to start a cover letter with "As a..."?

It is fine and widely used, as long as what follows is specific. "As a certified electrician with six years of commercial installations" works; "As a hard-working person" does not.

Good examples:

  • "As a HACCP-trained sous chef, I have run the cold kitchen of a 150-seat restaurant for two years."
  • "As the only IT support technician for a 60-person office, I handle everything from network issues to new laptop set-up."

Check the grammar: the "As a..." phrase must describe the subject of the sentence. "As a nurse, the ward valued my care" is incorrect; "As a nurse, I..." is correct. Avoid using "As a..." to start several sentences in the same letter.

Should I mention my current employer in the first line?

You can, if it adds credibility or relevance. A well-known or relevant employer can strengthen the opening. If you are applying confidentially, think about whether you want to name them.

Examples:

  • "As a Store Supervisor at a national electronics retailer, I am applying for your Assistant Store Manager role."
  • "In my current role as a Payroll Officer at Bayside Group, I process payroll for 800 employees across three countries."

If you prefer not to name your employer, describe it instead: "a leading regional hospital group" or "a mid-sized engineering consultancy". The reader still gets useful context.

How do I turn a generic opening into a strong one?

Replace general words with the job title, the company name and one specific fact about you. Then cut anything the reader already knows.

Before:
"I am writing to express my interest in the position advertised. I am a motivated and hard-working professional who would be a great asset to your company."

After:
"I am applying for the Inventory Controller role at Northline Distribution. In my current warehouse, I introduced weekly cycle counts that greatly reduced stock differences at the annual audit."

Steps:

  • Add the exact role and company.
  • Swap adjectives for one real example.
  • Delete phrases like "great asset" or "advertised position".

Read the new version aloud. If it could only have been written by you, for this job, it is strong.

Does it matter who referred me, a friend or a former colleague?

Yes, slightly. A referral from someone who has worked with you carries more weight, because they can speak about your work. A friend's referral is still useful, but describe it honestly.

How to word each:

  • Former colleague: "Ravi Kumar, who managed me at Delta Engineering, recommended I apply for this role."
  • Friend or acquaintance: "Lina Farouk, a member of your Marketing team, told me about this opening."
  • Someone you met briefly: "After speaking with Jacob Moore at the Abu Dhabi Careers Fair, I was encouraged to apply."

Never overstate the relationship. The employer may ask the person what they know about you.

What is a good opening for a remote job cover letter?

Mention the role, your experience working remotely or with distributed teams, and your relevant skill in the first two sentences.

Examples:

  • "I am applying for the Remote Customer Success Manager role. For three years I have supported clients across Europe and the Middle East from home, using video calls and shared dashboards to keep accounts on track."
  • "As a freelance copywriter who has delivered projects for clients in four countries, I would like to apply for your Remote Content Writer position."
  • "Your fully remote engineering team appeals to me, as I have worked asynchronously with developers in three time zones for the past two years."

If the role has time-zone requirements, mention your location and working hours later in the letter.

  • "I am applying for the Safety Officer position, and I hold a NEBOSH International General Certificate along with three years of site safety experience."
