Cover letters for special situations

How do I address an employment gap in a cover letter?

Mention it briefly and positively only if it is recent or obvious, then move on to why you are ready now. One or two sentences is enough; the cover letter is not the place for a full explanation.

A helpful pattern is: reason in a few words, anything useful you did, and readiness to return.

Example: "After taking 2024 off to care for a family member, I have refreshed my skills with an online Excel and Power BI course and am ready to return to full-time finance work."

Tips:

  • Keep private details private. "Family reasons" or "health reasons, now fully resolved" is enough.
  • Do not apologise or sound defensive.
  • If the gap is short or several years ago, you usually do not need to mention it at all.

The interview is where you can add more detail if asked.
