Physiotherapist resume

This guide answers questions physiotherapists ask when writing a resume, from new graduates listing clinical placements to senior clinicians leading a service. It covers summaries, clinical skills, example bullets for musculoskeletal, neurological, paediatric, sports and community work, how to show outcomes without breaking patient confidentiality, and how to present registration, courses and memberships. All sample lines are fictional. This page is about resume presentation only, not clinical practice; check registration and licensing rules with the official regulator where you want to work.

How do I write a professional summary for a physiotherapist resume?

Write two or three lines that state your clinical area, the settings you have worked in and one or two strengths with evidence. Employers want to know quickly whether your caseload matches theirs.

Include:

  • Years of experience and your main area, such as musculoskeletal (MSK), neurological, cardiorespiratory, paediatric or sports.
  • Settings: hospital inpatients, outpatient clinic, community, private practice, rehabilitation centre.
  • A specialist skill or course, such as acupuncture/dry needling or vestibular rehabilitation, if you hold it.

Example (fictional): "Musculoskeletal physiotherapist with five years in busy outpatient clinics, managing a caseload of post-operative knee and shoulder patients. Trained in dry needling and clinical Pilates, with a focus on clear home exercise programmes."

Keep registration details for a separate Licences section rather than the summary.

What clinical skills should go on a physiotherapist resume?

List the assessment and treatment skills that match the job's caseload, grouped so a reader can find them fast. A generic list such as "patient care" is too vague for physiotherapy.

Useful groups:

  • Assessment: subjective and objective assessment, outcome measures, gait analysis, falls risk assessment.
  • Treatment: manual therapy, exercise prescription, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, respiratory physiotherapy.
  • Specialist: dry needling, vestibular rehab, clinical Pilates, sports taping, splinting.
  • Systems: the electronic patient record or clinic software you have used.

Only list techniques you are trained and confident in. Then support the key ones in your experience bullets, for example: "Ran twice-weekly hydrotherapy sessions for post-operative hip patients" (fictional example).

How should I list my physiotherapy registration or licence?

Put it in its own "Licences and Registration" section near the top, with the registering body, your registration number and the expiry or renewal date if there is one. Healthcare employers check this early.

Example format (fictional):
"Registered Physiotherapist, Fictional Health Professions Council, Reg. No. PT-12345, valid to June 2027."

Points to remember:

  • Write the body's name and your title exactly as on your certificate.
  • If you hold registration in more than one country, list each separately.
  • If you are applying abroad and your registration there is in progress, say so honestly, e.g. "Application submitted, awaiting outcome."

Rules differ by country and employer, so check with the official regulator where you want to work. Never claim a registration you do not yet hold.

What are good example bullets for an outpatient musculoskeletal physiotherapist?

Good MSK bullets show caseload, conditions, techniques and patient outcomes in general terms, without patient details.

Examples (fictional):

  • "Managed a caseload of around 12 outpatients per day with back, neck, knee and shoulder conditions."
  • "Designed home exercise programmes using an exercise app, improving patient adherence based on follow-up reviews."
  • "Ran a weekly post-operative ACL rehabilitation class for up to 8 patients."
  • "Used validated outcome measures at first and final sessions to track progress and report to referring surgeons."
  • "Reduced waiting time for new assessments by introducing a telephone triage slot each morning."

Choose four to six that fit the job you want, and keep them in past tense for previous roles.

How do I show measurable outcomes as a physiotherapist without breaking patient confidentiality?

Use totals, averages and service-level results, never individual patient details. Numbers about caseload, programmes and processes are safe and still show impact.

Things you can count:

  • Patients seen per day or per week.
  • Classes or groups you ran and how many attended.
  • Waiting-list or discharge time improvements in your service.
  • Audits or projects you led and what changed.

Example (fictional): "Led a falls-prevention audit on a 28-bed elderly care ward, which led to a new mobility checklist used by all staff."

Example (fictional): "Cut average waiting time for outpatient assessment from six weeks to four by adding group triage sessions."

Never include names, dates of birth, photographs or case descriptions that could identify a patient.

How do I write a new graduate physiotherapist resume?

Lead with your degree and clinical placements, because placements are your main clinical experience. Treat each placement like a short job entry.

Structure:

  • Summary naming your degree and the areas you enjoyed most.
  • Education with degree, university and year.
  • Clinical placements: setting, specialty, length and two or three bullets each.
  • Licences or registration status.
  • Courses, volunteering and sports work.

Example placement bullet (fictional): "Assessed and treated respiratory patients on an acute medical ward under supervision, including chest clearance and early mobilisation."

Example (fictional): "Completed a six-week neurological placement in a stroke rehabilitation unit, supporting gait re-education sessions."

A one-page resume is usually enough at this stage.

Should I list my clinical rotations by specialty on a physiotherapy resume?

Yes, list rotations by specialty and setting, because employers often hire for specific areas. A list of rotations shows breadth at a glance.

Example format (fictional):

  • "Rotation: Musculoskeletal outpatients, Fictional General Hospital, 4 months"
  • "Rotation: Neurological rehabilitation, 4 months"
  • "Rotation: Respiratory and critical care, 4 months"

Add one or two bullets under each rotation only where you did something notable, such as running a class or leading an audit. For senior roles, you can shorten older rotations to one line and expand the specialty you want to stay in.

What should a senior or lead physiotherapist resume emphasise?

Emphasise service leadership, clinical supervision and improvement work, not just hands-on treatment. Senior roles are judged on how you develop staff and run a service.

Highlight:

  • Supervising junior physiotherapists, assistants and students.
  • Running in-service training and clinical audits.
  • Managing waiting lists, rotas and referral pathways.
  • Working with consultants, surgeons and multidisciplinary teams.

Example (fictional): "Supervised 4 junior physiotherapists and 2 assistants, holding fortnightly case reviews and annual appraisals."

Example (fictional): "Set up a new direct-access pathway for back pain with the orthopaedic team, reducing duplicate referrals."

How do I present sports physiotherapy experience with a club or team?

Name the club or event, the level of sport and your duties, while keeping athlete information confidential. Sports experience is valuable, but readers need to understand your actual role.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Provided pitch-side and clinic physiotherapy for a semi-professional football club during the 2024 season."
  • "Delivered pre-match taping, warm-up screening and return-to-play rehabilitation for a squad of 25 players."
  • "Worked with the strength and conditioning coach to plan injury-prevention programmes."

If you volunteered at events, list them under Volunteer Work or Experience with dates. Sports first aid or pitch-side courses can go in Certifications. Never name injured athletes or describe their injuries.

Which continuing education courses should I put on a physiotherapy resume?

Include courses that are recent, relevant to the job and come with a certificate or recognised provider. A long list of one-hour webinars can bury the important ones.

Good examples to list:

  • Dry needling or acupuncture courses.
  • Manual therapy or spinal manipulation courses.
  • Clinical Pilates, vestibular rehabilitation, lymphoedema management.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) if you hold it.

Format: "Dry Needling Level 1, Fictional Training Institute, 2024."

Group shorter items under one line such as "Further CPD in shoulder rehabilitation and exercise prescription (2023 to 2025)". Check whether the job lists any course as preferred and place it first if you have it.

What keywords do employers use in physiotherapist job adverts?

Common terms include the specialty, the setting and the methods, so mirror them where they match your real experience.

Typical keywords:

  • Musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiorespiratory, paediatric, women's health, sports
  • Inpatient, outpatient, community, home visits, rehabilitation
  • Assessment, treatment planning, exercise prescription, manual therapy, outcome measures
  • Multidisciplinary team, discharge planning, patient education
  • Registration or licence, BLS, CPD

Read two or three adverts for the role you want and note repeated words. Use them in your summary, skills and bullets in a natural way. The job-description comparison in the builder shows which frequent terms are missing so you can decide whether they apply to you.

My physiotherapy resume reads like a job description. How do I fix it?

Replace duty lists with specific bullets that show the patients, the setting and what changed because of your work. "Responsible for assessing and treating patients" is true of every physiotherapist and tells a reader nothing new.

Rewrite each line using: action, patient group or setting, method, result.

Before: "Responsible for treating neurological patients."
After (fictional example): "Delivered daily gait and balance rehabilitation for stroke patients on a 20-bed unit, contributing to earlier discharge planning with the ward team."

Also cut repeated bullets across jobs and keep the ones that best fit the job you are applying for.

How should a physiotherapist in private practice show business skills?

Add bullets about patient retention, referrals, marketing and running the clinic, alongside your clinical work. Private practice employers often care about both.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Built a referral relationship with three local GP practices and a sports club."
  • "Launched a weekly back-care class that became a regular source of new patients."
  • "Managed my own appointment book and kept cancellations low through reminder calls."
  • "Helped the clinic owner choose new booking and notes software and trained reception staff."

Avoid quoting fees or income. Keep any business numbers general, such as "most class members rebooked for a second block".

What order should sections go in on a physiotherapist resume?

For experienced physiotherapists, a reliable order is:

  • Contact details
  • Summary
  • Licences and registration
  • Clinical experience (most recent first)
  • Education
  • Courses and certifications
  • Professional memberships
  • Research or publications, if any

For new graduates, put Education and Clinical Placements before work experience. Keep registration near the top in both cases so the reader does not need to search for it. Use clear headings so applicant tracking systems can read each section.

Can I move from physiotherapy into a non-clinical role, and how should my resume look?

Yes. Physiotherapists often move into clinical education, health tech, medical device sales, occupational health, research or wellbeing roles. Your resume should lead with transferable skills, not treatment techniques.

How to adapt it:

  • New summary aimed at the target role.
  • Bullets that show teaching, patient education, data collection, audits or product knowledge.
  • A shorter clinical skills list.
  • Any new courses for the target field.

Example summary (fictional): "Physiotherapist with seven years of MSK practice moving into medical device training, with experience teaching patients and staff to use rehabilitation equipment."

Example bullet (fictional): "Trained 30 ward staff on safe use of new hoists and standing aids."

Should I include research or audit projects on a physiotherapy resume?

Yes, especially for hospital, academic or senior roles. Audits and research show that you can evaluate practice, not just deliver it.

How to present them:

  • Use a "Research and Audit" or "Projects" section.
  • Give the title, your role, the setting and the outcome.

Example (fictional): "Audit lead: Documentation of outcome measures in outpatient MSK, 2024. Findings led to a standard template adopted across the department."

Example (fictional): "Co-author of a poster on early mobilisation after hip fracture, presented at a regional conference."

If you have peer-reviewed publications, list them in a Publications section in a consistent citation style.

How do I write a paediatric physiotherapy resume?

Highlight child-specific assessment, family education and multidisciplinary work with schools and other therapists. Paediatric employers want evidence that you can work with children and their families.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Assessed motor development for children aged 0 to 12 in a community clinic, using standardised developmental tools."
  • "Wrote home programmes for parents and taught carers how to support daily exercises."
  • "Worked with occupational therapists, speech therapists and teachers on joint goals for school-age children."

List any paediatric-specific courses and safeguarding training in Certifications. If your country requires background checks for working with children, state your check status only as the employer asks.

How do I describe home visit or community physiotherapy work?

Show the independence, planning and risk assessment that community work needs. Community roles differ from hospital roles, so make the setting clear in your bullets.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Carried a community caseload of housebound older adults, planning daily routes for 6 to 8 home visits."
  • "Completed home environment and falls risk assessments and arranged equipment through the local service."
  • "Liaised with GPs, district nurses and social workers to support safe discharge from hospital."

Mention any driving licence in your personal details if the job requires travel between homes.

Is a physiotherapy assistant resume different from a physiotherapist resume?

Yes. A physiotherapy assistant resume should stress supporting treatment plans set by a physiotherapist, while a physiotherapist resume shows independent assessment and clinical decisions. Use accurate wording for your role.

For an assistant, focus on:

  • Preparing equipment and treatment areas.
  • Supervising exercises set by the physiotherapist.
  • Helping patients with mobility and transfers.
  • Recording progress for the physiotherapist to review.

Example (fictional): "Supervised group exercise classes planned by the senior physiotherapist for up to 10 cardiac rehabilitation patients."

Do not use the title "physiotherapist" unless you are qualified and registered to use it where you work.

How do I show neurological rehabilitation experience on my resume?

Name the conditions, the setting and the techniques in general terms, and show multidisciplinary work. Neuro rehab employers look for patience, long-term goal setting and teamwork.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Provided rehabilitation for patients after stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury on a 24-bed specialist unit."
  • "Used task-specific training and balance retraining, measured with standard outcome tools."
  • "Contributed to weekly goal-setting meetings with nursing, occupational therapy and speech therapy."
  • "Taught families safe transfer and positioning techniques before discharge."

Specialist neuro courses can go in Certifications with dates.

Should a physiotherapist list professional memberships on a resume?

Yes, list relevant memberships in a short section, because they show ongoing engagement with the profession. Keep it to the name of the body, your membership type and the year you joined.

Example (fictional): "Member, Fictional Society of Sports Physiotherapy, since 2021."

Professional membership is not the same as registration or a licence to practise, so keep the two in separate sections. If you hold a committee role, add one short line about what you did.

What mistakes are common on physiotherapist resumes?

The common ones are vague duties, missing registration details and confidential patient information.

Check your resume for:

  • Bullets that only say "assessed and treated patients".
  • Registration or licence number missing, unclear or out of date.
  • Patient names, photos or identifiable case details.
  • A long list of every short course, hiding the important ones.
  • No mention of the setting (inpatient, outpatient, community).
  • Abbreviations that a non-physio recruiter may not know, used without the full term once.

Fix these first, then tailor the summary and top bullets to each job.

How do I tailor a physiotherapy resume for a hospital versus a private clinic?

Keep your facts the same but change what you put first. Hospitals often want inpatient, multidisciplinary and acute experience; private clinics often want outpatient MSK, independent caseloads and patient retention.

For a hospital role, lead with:

  • Ward experience, discharge planning, respiratory or neuro work.
  • Teamwork with doctors, nurses and therapists.

For a private clinic, lead with:

  • Outpatient MSK and sports caseloads.
  • Manual therapy, exercise classes, patient education.
  • Building referrals and rebooking.

Example summary line (fictional, clinic version): "Outpatient MSK physiotherapist experienced in managing an independent caseload and running group rehabilitation classes."

How do I include women's health or pelvic health physiotherapy on a resume?

List it as a specialty in your summary and skills, and describe your caseload in neutral, professional terms. Many employers look specifically for this experience.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Ran an outpatient pelvic health clinic for antenatal and postnatal patients."
  • "Delivered group education sessions on pelvic floor exercise for new mothers."
  • "Worked closely with midwives and gynaecology teams on referrals."

List any specialist training in Certifications with the provider and year. Keep all patient details out, as with any clinical resume.

Open the resume builder

How do I describe cardiorespiratory or ICU physiotherapy on my resume?

Name the setting, the patient groups and the main techniques in general terms, and show that you worked as part of a critical care team. Keep it about your role, not clinical detail.

Example bullets (fictional):

  • "Provided respiratory physiotherapy on a 16-bed intensive care unit, including airway clearance and early mobilisation of ventilated patients."
  • "Participated in the on-call respiratory rota for nights and weekends."
  • "Delivered pre-operative education for cardiothoracic surgery patients and supported their recovery on the ward."
  • "Worked with intensivists and nursing staff in daily ward rounds to agree mobility goals."

List on-call competencies or critical care courses in Certifications if your employer awarded them, with the year.
