Honesty and accuracy – Page 2
I worked at a company through an agency or outsourcing firm. Whose name do I use?
Be accurate about both: your actual employer was the agency, and the client was where you worked. Showing both keeps you honest and still lets you mention the well-known name.
Examples:
- "IT Support Analyst, TechStaff Solutions (placed at Desert Healthcare Group), Dubai"
- "Customer Service Agent, contracted to a major telecoms provider via ServicePlus"
This matters because background checks usually contact your actual employer of record. Claiming direct employment with the client can cause problems if the check does not match.
I was promoted partway through a job. Can I show only my higher title for the whole period?
No. Show each title with its own dates, so it is clear when the promotion happened. A promotion is a strength, so there is no need to hide the earlier title.
Example:
"Al Dana Bank, Abu Dhabi
Relationship Manager (2022–Present)
Assistant Relationship Manager (2019–2022)"
Using only the higher title for the whole period would overstate your experience at that level, and a reference or background check would likely show the difference. Listing both titles clearly shows growth and trust from your employer.
How do I list an acting or temporary role honestly?
Write the word "Acting" or "Interim" with the title and the dates you held it, alongside your substantive role. This shows real responsibility without suggesting a permanent appointment.
Examples:
- "Acting Head of Finance (Jun–Dec 2024), while Senior Accountant"
- "Senior Accountant, 2021–Present; Acting Head of Finance, Jun–Dec 2024"
Add one or two bullets on what you achieved in the acting role. Interim responsibility is valuable evidence when applying for a more senior job, and presenting it accurately is more convincing than dropping the word "Acting".
My job title was in another language. How do I translate it honestly?
Use the closest accurate English equivalent, and, if helpful, include the original title in brackets. Do not choose a translation that sounds more senior than the role was.
Examples:
- "Sales Representative (Commercial Délégué)"
- "Head of Section (Rais Qism)"
Tips:
- Check how your employer translated the title in official documents, such as English experience letters or contracts.
- Match that translation if one exists.
- Explain unusual titles with a short clarifier in your bullets.
Consistency matters, because employers may compare your resume with translated certificates or references.
My former employer's records show a different title from the one on my resume. What should I do?
Change your resume to match the official title, then explain your actual role in the bullets. Differences between your resume and employer records can make a background check look like a false claim.
Steps:
- Check your contract, payslips or experience letter for the official title.
- Use that title on your resume.
- Add a clarifier if your work was broader: "Office Coordinator (also managed purchasing for the branch)".
- If the records themselves are wrong, contact the employer's HR to correct them.
If a check is already underway, explain the difference to the new employer honestly and provide any documents that support your role.
I guided junior staff informally. Can I say I "managed" them?
Use words that match what you actually did. "Managed" usually implies formal authority, such as hiring, appraisals and approving leave. If you did not have that, choose a more accurate verb.
Accurate options:
- "Mentored three junior analysts."
- "Supervised two trainees during their first six months."
- "Coordinated daily tasks for a team of four."
- "Trained new hires on reporting tools."
These still show leadership. In an interview, being clear about your level of responsibility helps the employer place you at the right level, and avoids awkward questions about direct reports you never had.
Can I round my grades up on my resume?
No. Grades are easy to verify from transcripts and certificates, so they must match exactly. If your grade is not strong, it is better to leave it out than to change it.
Tips:
- Write grades exactly as on your official documents, using the same scale.
- If the scale may confuse foreign readers, add context: "CGPA 8.1/10".
- If the class or division is better known than the number, use that: "First Class".
- Leaving out an average grade is acceptable; an application form that asks for it must be answered accurately.
I did a short course or exchange at a famous university. How do I list it honestly?
Name the actual programme and its length, so it is not mistaken for a degree. Short courses at well-known institutions can be valuable, but the description must be precise.
Examples:
- "Executive Education: Strategic Leadership (one-week programme), a leading business school, 2024"
- "Exchange semester, Faculty of Economics, Barcelona Metropolitan University, 2022 (as part of BCom, New Delhi College of Commerce)"
Put these in a training or education section with clear labels. Avoid listing just the university name and a subject, which can suggest a full degree. Accurate wording still shows initiative and international experience.
Will an employer ask to see my degree certificates?
Many do, especially for professional roles and in countries where qualifications must be checked or attested for work permits or licensing. Plan as if your qualifications will be checked.
Practical steps:
- List qualifications exactly as written on your certificates: degree name, institution and year.
- Keep certificates and transcripts easy to find, ideally with scanned copies.
- If attestation or recognition may be needed for a job abroad, check the requirements with official sources early, as it can take time.
Accurate listings avoid delays and awkward questions when the employer compares your resume with your documents.
I found a mistake in a resume I already sent. What should I do?
If it is a factual error, such as wrong dates, a wrong title or wrong contact details, send a brief correction. If it is a small typo, it is usually better to fix it for future applications and move on.
How to correct a factual error:
- Write a short email or use the application system to upload the corrected version.
- Explain in one line: "I noticed an error in my employment dates and have attached a corrected resume."
- Do not over-apologise or add new content.
Correcting a factual mistake quickly shows integrity. Leaving it can cause problems later if your details are checked against records.
Can I use AI to tailor my resume for each job without losing accuracy?
Yes, if you control the facts. Give the tool your accurate base resume and the job posting, ask it only to reorder and reword, and check the result against your base version.
A safe routine:
- Tell the tool not to add skills, numbers, tools or titles.
- Compare each changed bullet with the original; the facts should be identical.
- Remove posting terms that the tool added but you cannot support.
- Watch for upgraded verbs, such as "assisted" becoming "led".
AI can speed up tailoring, but it does not know your real history. Treat its output as a suggestion that needs your approval line by line.
Can I list a job I accepted but never actually started?
No. If you did not work there, it is not experience. Listing it would be a false claim, even if you signed a contract.
What you can do instead:
- If the job fell through and created a gap, explain the gap briefly and honestly if asked: "An accepted offer was withdrawn due to a hiring freeze."
- If you did any paid onboarding or training before it ended, that can be mentioned accurately with dates.
Fill the period on your resume only with real activities, such as training, freelance work or volunteering.
Can I invent a freelance role to cover a gap in my resume?
No. A made-up role is a false claim, and freelance work is easy to question: interviewers may ask for clients, projects or examples.
Honest ways to handle a gap:
- If you did real freelance or project work, list it accurately, even if it was small.
- List genuine courses, volunteering or caring responsibilities if relevant.
- Leave the gap and be ready to explain it in a sentence.
Many employers accept gaps for reasons such as study, family, health or relocation. An honest, short explanation is far safer than an invented job.
Can I change my graduation year so my age is less obvious?
No, do not change it. You can choose to leave the year off your resume, but any year you do show must be correct, as it can be checked against certificates.
Options if you are concerned about age bias:
- Remove graduation years from older qualifications.
- Summarise early career roles without dates in an "Earlier career" line.
- Focus your summary on recent achievements and current skills.
Application forms may still ask for dates; give them accurately there. In some countries, laws protect job applicants from age discrimination, but the safest resume approach is selective, honest content rather than altered facts.

Should I include a qualification that is relevant but very old?
Yes, if it is still valid and relevant, list it accurately with its real date or without a date. Do not update the date to make it look recent.
Things to check:
- Whether the qualification still means the same thing today; some have been replaced or renamed.
- Whether it needs renewal to be current, such as many safety or technical certificates.
- Whether newer training would better show up-to-date knowledge.
If the qualification has been renamed, you can write both: "Diploma in Computing (now called Diploma in Information Technology)". Accuracy about its status helps employers understand its value.
