Resume length and what to cut

What is the fastest way to cut a four-page resume down to two?

Work in passes from big cuts to small ones, so you do not spend time polishing lines you will delete anyway.

  • Pass 1: Remove roles, courses and sections that are not relevant to the jobs you are now applying for.
  • Pass 2: Turn everything older than 10 to 15 years into a short "Earlier career" summary.
  • Pass 3: Limit each remaining role to its strongest bullets, usually four to six for the latest job and fewer for older ones.
  • Pass 4: Delete repeated points and merge similar bullets.
  • Pass 5: Shorten wordy bullets to one or two lines each.

Check the length after each pass. Most four-page resumes reach two pages by the end of pass 3. Save the long version separately: it is a useful source when you tailor applications later.
