Tailoring your resume to a job

I meet only some of the requirements. How should I tailor my resume?

Lead with the requirements you meet strongly, show related experience for the gaps you partly cover, and do not claim what you do not have. Employers often hire people who meet most core requirements rather than every single line.

Steps:

  • Put your strongest matches in your summary and the top bullets of each role.
  • For partial matches, show the closest real experience, for example "Supported month-end close" when they ask for "experience running month-end close".
  • Mention relevant training in progress, with the expected completion date.
  • Leave out requirements you cannot support at all; your cover letter can address one important gap briefly.

If you are missing several essential requirements, such as a required licence, consider whether the role is realistic right now.
