How to compress images
- Add images. Choose up to 50 at once, drag them in, or paste a screenshot.
- Choose how to compress. Pick a quality level, or a target file size such as 100 KB.
- Optionally change format and size. Convert to JPG, PNG or WebP, and resize by percentage or to a width and height.
- Compress and compare. Drag the slider to compare the original and the compressed image.
- Download. Download each image, or all of them in one ZIP file.
Quality levels
- Low compression: best quality; PNG images stay lossless.
- Balanced: recommended for websites, email and application forms.
- High compression: the smallest files; fine detail softens.
- Custom: choose the quality yourself.
For PNG, lower quality reduces the number of colours, which works well for logos, screenshots and graphics. For photos, JPG or WebP give much smaller files.
Compressing to a target size
Many job portals and government forms ask for a photo under a certain size, such as 50 KB or 200 KB. Choose “Target file size” and the tool tries progressively lower quality, checking the real file size each time. If the image still does not fit at the lowest sensible quality, it is scaled down step by step (you can turn this off). If a target cannot be reached, you are told the closest size achieved.
What you see after compressing
Original and new dimensions, original and new file size, the space saved and the percentage, all measured on the actual files. If an image is already well compressed and the new file would be larger, the original is kept unchanged and you are told.
Good to know
- Images are never enlarged, stretched or cropped.
- Phone photos are turned the right way up.
- Transparency is kept in PNG and WebP; when converting to JPG, you choose the background colour.
- Hidden photo information such as camera details and GPS location is removed from compressed images.
- Up to 50 images at a time, 30 MB and 40 megapixels each. HEIC is not supported.
Privacy: your files stay on your device
This tool works inside your web browser. Your files are opened and processed on your own computer or phone; they are not uploaded to our server, and we never see, store or keep them. That also means there is no waiting for uploads or downloads, and the tool keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded. Closing the page clears everything.
Frequently asked questions
Is the image compressor free?
Yes, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on use.
How do I make a photo under 100 KB for an application form?
Choose “Target file size”, select 100 KB, and compress. Download the result and upload it to the form.
Which format should I choose?
JPG for photos, PNG for logos, screenshots and images with transparency, and WebP for the smallest files on websites. Some older forms do not accept WebP.
Why is my compressed PNG not much smaller?
PNG is lossless, so photos stored as PNG stay large. Choose JPG or WebP as the output format for photos.
