Fonts, special characters and languages in PDFs
Why do some characters show as empty boxes in my PDF?
The font used for the PDF does not contain those characters, so the viewer shows a placeholder box instead. People sometimes call these boxes "tofu". It usually happens with emojis, rare symbols, or letters from a script the font does not cover.
How to fix it:
- Find the boxes and check what you typed there.
- Replace symbols and emojis with plain words, for example "Phone:" instead of a phone icon.
- For letters in another script, use a resume language and template that supports that script.
In ResumeBuilder.ae, the checklist before payment flags characters the PDF cannot print, and the builder warns before payment if any character cannot be included. Fix those warnings first, then preview the result.
