Templates for students, mid-career and executives

How should my resume design change as my career progresses?

The basic design stays clean and readable at every level; what changes is the emphasis, density and tone. Your template should shift from showing potential to showing proven results and scope.

How it typically changes:

  • Students and graduates: education, projects and internships take more space; one page is usual; a slightly more spacious, friendly layout works well.
  • Early to mid-career: work experience becomes the main section; skills and certifications support it; the layout gets a little more compact.
  • Managers: each role shows team size, budgets and outcomes; a summary that frames your leadership becomes important.
  • Executives: an understated, polished design; a strong summary and selected achievements; earlier roles condensed.
  • Academics: a long, list-based CV with publications and research, formatted with strict consistency.

Review your template every few years. A design that suited your first job often wastes space or looks junior once you have a decade of experience.
